Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments I have read all of those, so not sure if my 'vote' should be counted. Any of the three would be fine.

I remember more about Behold and Duplicate, which might mean that I thought them better, or that I was less distracted when I read them.

Same here, I've read and enjoyed them all so any of the three are fine for me, and I have used but good copies of all three! Or good old Scribd if I'm still needing jumbo fonts in September - I hope not, but I'm prepared if needed! Sometimes jumbo font is nice, even if my poor, tired brain doesn't "need" it!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & giving this a bump. I'll be closing it quite early tomorrow NZ time as I'm going to Auckland. :)

Thanks Susan.

& by the narrowest of margins, the winner is Behold Here's Poison.

Should generate some fun discussion!

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments How fun! I'll see if I can get that at the library tomorrow and start reading while I have the time. I also have The Convenient Marriage to reread with the rest of you.

'Behold, Here's Poison' is for Sept. The August book is 'The Masqueraders'. So you may need to change what you grab from the library...

message 462: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments I won't have time to read in September-that's when work gets busy. I'm going to get a head start now. I read The Masqueraders recently. I almost grabbed that one again last time I was at the library but I didn't. The subscription library has beautiful old books that smell so good. I like getting early editions as much as possible and one of the librarians is a big Georgette Heyer fan so I know the shelf will always be stocked.

message 463: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2190 comments Wow that's great QNPoohBear. I have three first editions of three Heyer books courtesy of a birthday present from my brother. I love them and keep them wrapped in plastic.

I would put them in acid free boxes and take them out to smell them once in awhile. The paper is very brittle on the old library editions though so I have to see if I want to bring home the old edition or get a newer one at the public library.

How does your subscription library work? I remember buying library cards as a kid; they were $.25/each (I think) and each card entitled you to check out one book. So that's where my money went!

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Our libraries are free at point of use. They are funded through local taxation. My Mum had taught me to read and enrolled me in the local library before I even went to school. It provided me with the opportunity to read an inordinate amount of books which otherwise would have been out of reach as my parents could not have afforded the 10/12 books that I read every week. I am still a member of our local library and my usage has dropped to about 4 a week because now I can afford to buy books:- either to handle direct or read on my iPad. Libraries have been a wonderful resource for so many people over the years. It is sad to see funding being cut nowadays.

I think that just about all of the U.S.'s libraries are free, too, Susan, so that's why I was asking about QNPoohbear's subscription library. I was just thinking about my $.25 library cards, and it might have been because the library was across the state line, or it might just have been because it was .... ahem.... decades ago!

We do still have "city libraries" around, which are funded by city taxes, and so those who live outside of the town limits are required to pay what the townies pay in library taxes, but I don't think that's very common. Most of my state's libraries are funded by "district" taxes, so they're free (ha! Is anything really free?) to all patrons within the district.

message 470: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments A subscription library is just what it was as Georgette Heyer describes it in her Regency novels with a modern slant. It started back then too. You pay a membership fee and can check out materials, attend programs and events, use their wifi and reading room. This one I belong to is open to the public. You have to pay to check out materials but anyone is welcome to attend programs browse, sit and read or use wifi. It's a local institution and I go there because it's convenient to grab older books like Heyer off the shelf than wait for interlibrary loan.

The nearest public library to me now is up a hill and I don't like to walk there unless I have to. I also use the public library across from my work when I'm there on Saturdays and there's little traffic in the city.

I have my mystery book in hand and as I read I will take notes so I can share my thoughts with everyone in September.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ There was still a subscription library in Dunedin. I haven't been to Dunedin for a few years & I can't google it, so it may have closed.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & I have opened this thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... so we can discuss how we are going to do our group reads in 2018. :)

Have the books for October/November/December of 2017 been selected yet, or is that still in progress?

Hi there Moonlight - I've been away with a convalescent friend. I could read on my phone but generally don't post.

We will be looking at Octobers choice in the next few days. I would like to do a Regency - but not one the group has read recently.

There will also be a November read, but in December we take a month off. Anyone is welcome to pull up old threads & discuss them then though. :)

message 475: by Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ (last edited Aug 17, 2017 05:11PM) (new)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & time to choose our read for October. (September's read will be Behold, Here's Poison )

I would like to do a Regency - we haven't read one since May.

The choices are

The Nonesuch
Frederica
******
April Lady
Bath Tangle
******
Charity Girl

The first two we have read as a group, but not since 2014. I've read each of them at least 30 times, so I feel I can lead the discussion, but may not reread myself

The next two we have never read as a group.

The third one we have also never read, but I'm not fond of this title, so we would need a volunteer to lead the discussion.

So let the voting begin! I will probably close the votes Wednesday morning NZ time, Tuesday US time

Edit: Please just vote for one book. It's harder for me to count up when people vote for a couple! :)

message 476: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 2190 comments The Nonesuch The Nonesuch The Nonesuch!!! Ahem! You've probably guessed this is my favorite Heyer. I'd love to read it with other people and see what they think.

message 477: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Looking at the ones we haven’t read: It has been a very long time since I’ve read Bath Tangle, and though it’s far from being a favorite (the whole angry heroine thing) it does have some merits so I guess I’d vote for that. April Lady perhaps too much like Friday’s Child (read last year) to read right now?

message 478: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 4147 comments I'd vote for either Frederica or the nonesuch.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Susan in NC wrote: "I'd vote for either Frederica or the nonesuch."

Could you choose just one, Susan? It makes counting a bit harder when people choose a couple. :)

message 480: by Susan in NC (new)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Susan in NC wrote: "Ok Frederica since I only read it once and years ago!"

Thanks for understanding Susan. :)

So far The Nonesuch, Frederica & Bath Tangle each have one vote.

message 482: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) April Lady. I haven't read it for a long time so I'd like to revisit it.

message 483: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments I vote for April Lady...

because I associate it with A Marriage of Convenience and A Civil Contract and need the push of a group read to try it again.

I love all the others so I'll be happy whatever the outcome :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'm going to vote for April Lady too. I'm fond of Nell & Giles.

So that is April Lady 3
Bath Tangle 1
Frederica 1
The Nonesuch 1

When I have my follow up with my neurosurgeon next month, it would make my year if he prescribed "restorative pork jelly!" ;-)
