Here are two very popular books on the French Revolution.

And thanks a lot for the link to the topic, just did not expect the French Revolution filed under Military History. Lots of interesting books listed there.

I am looking for a straight forward historical biography of Claude Monet. I have several books on his work and some collections, but I am really looking more for a "life and works" bio that really gets into his life. Anyone have a recommendation?

Hi,
I am looking for a book that talks about Lenin, Lenin's ideology, Communism, Red army, the uprising and Stalin. Can you recommend a good book? I tried to google and search on goodreads and the amount of books out there is overwhelming. A little help would be appreciated.
Also, my little search and little knowledge that I gained via internet somehow seems too biased. It seems like what they say is true, history is written by winners. I don't mind a general book of history but would love it if there is a russian historian out there whose book I can buy, just to get another perspective over it.
Thanks in advance. :)

All of my Civil War reading to date has been Shelby Foote and Bruce Catton. I'm considering picking up a few books by Dowdey. Can anyone advise..."
Read Team of Rivals: The political genius of Abraham Lincon by Doris K. Goodwin

Don't forget to cite using bookcover and author photo:

"I know this is probably going to sound stupid but, does anyone know if there's someone out there conducting research on the life of Hypatia?
I read on a literary newsletter that there has been new evidence regarding her work and there was a conference in Athens about her 2 weeks ago, but I can't find anything anywhere...
If someone knows please reply. I am talking about legitimate scholarly research of the subject at hand :)"

"We are driving throughout western Europe for 5 weeks and would like a book on CD that gives a concise history of Europe and/or more specifically history of Rome/Roman Empire or of Medieval/Renaissance times in Europe. Something that is interesting enough to listen to for hours at a time but also historically accurate and informative."

Thanks.

During the early part of WW1 Churchill ,as First Lord of The Admiralty. Churchill sent the Royal Navies armored cars (weird but true only the navy had armored cars) to Belgian. Apparently it was initiative ,when there was none, another amazing chapter in Churchills' life. The point is could you help me find a book on the subject.

Mark - I found this and am searching for more.

The problem could be that many manufacturers were pitching in - in terms of the war effort - Rolls Royce, Lancaster, etc. - so books are varied and sometimes focus on the specific armored vehicle and manufacturer versus simply the ones used in the Belgium conflict - they were used in countless skirmishes.
Mark hope this gets you started in the right direction or some prove to be what you are looking for

Hi, my name is Jordi, I'm from Spain, and I'm new at this. I love to consult rating at Goodreads just before buying a book. Sorry if I'm not proceeding correctly here.
I read Roman Republic by Isaac Asimov and liked a lot. I'm trying to read more about the Roman Republic but can't find a suitable book for me. I bought Mommsen's: too academic, Holland's Rubicon: too romantic, ... Is there any book just in Asimov's style?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Jordi, here are a few.
by
Anthony Everitt
by Richard Alston (no photo)
by Greg Woolf (no photo)
I've only read the first book, but I think Everitt's will be exactly what you're looking for.

I've only read the first book, but I think Everitt's will be exactly what you're looking for.

And while I'm asking, is there a good, in-depth history of the Holy Roman Empire out there?

Thank you, Jerome, the three books seem very good. Un fortunately, I have search for the spanish translation and none of them has been translated.
Thank you anyway.
Hello Jill - did you tell Jordi that we have a welcome thread and send a link to that thread - that is where this should be. Also there are missing citations and that should have been included. And this very much sounds like a post that Vicki might be able to help out on.

You are welcome Jordi - here is the welcome thread link where you might want to post some details about yourself so we know who you are and one of the moderators can welcome you properly. No self promotion just some info about why you like history etc and maybe where you are from - your country. We are a global community so it is nice to find out where everybody is from. I know that Teri would have sent you our welcome note and it is alway good to get started off on the right foot and follow the guidelines.

Great Jordi and you can always practice by editing the messages where you did not realize that you needed them.

"Recently I read a book of James Bond series, Trigger Mortis. This is a book about the cold war just after the 2nd WW. As usual, the book blames SMERSH and Soviet Union for the after-war geopolitical issues. Then I was intrigued by the thinking, is there any crime series or detective novel in Russian literature of this time? Can you suggest me an introductory fiction? There is no chance for me to get a hardcopy else eBook format. Please suggest and share me if you can.
With love from Bangladesh,
Arnab "

Hi Arnab,
I just went to a Frederick Forsyth reading/interview. About Bond he said: "Bond's a joke. No spy on earth would act that way. He'd be dead in a second."
I don't know about Russian spy novels but maybe you might also want to read Western spy novels that try to stay closer to the truth/reality.
Frederick Forsyth

Thanks for your response Andre. At the eve of cold were there were consecutive activities done by both these two super powers. World saw some great technological invention, reverse engineering, witty socio-political events. These were reflected in espionage novels like Bond series. My question is, what had Russian writers did seeing such a one way hate-speech against Soviet and SMERSH. Did they write any counter stories?

Arnab, I got your question.
I was trying to point out that when you start with Bond and would want a Russian novel in the same category you would be looking at a very twisted picture of reality.
That's why I suggested looking at writers like F.Forsyth and John le Carré and find the Russian counterparts (or continue on the Bond-Fantasy path).
Frederick Forsyth

The Odessa File is really good but from what I read in your posts it is not the most perfect match - but then, what is?
Personally I also love Tom Clancy's writing, very well researched and a nice "what if" take on things.
Then there is Eric Ambler...
If I were you I'd check different synopses and decide to go for the books closest to your desired topic.
Have a great time reading.
Tom Clancy
Eric Ambler

I am looking for a book or books on the rise of Alexander the Great through the founding of the Roman Empire. Specifically I'm looking for a chronological narrative of the time period above and how one rise and fall of one person led to the next. Thanks.

The Early Vasas: A History of Sweden 1523 - 1611
by
Michael Roberts
There is the above one but I have not read it.
Synopsis:
This comprehensive history of sixteenth-century Sweden has remained a standard work for English-speaking historians since its publication in 1968. It is now available in paperback for the first time. The book includes a full account of the reign of Gustav Vasa (1523 60), one of the greatest rulers of his age, and of the half-century after his death that paved the way for Sweden's emergence as a great power. Professor Roberts provides an account of the course of the Swedish Reformation: he analyses those trans-Baltic entanglements which were to assume such importance, both for Sweden and for Europe, in the next century; and he pays particular attention to the constitutional controversies which reached their climax, though not their end, with the deposition of King Sigismund and the 'Bloodbath of Linkoping'.
