I just finished a really good book. It is Post Apocalyptic, about survivors living on a cruise ship, about to run out of drinking water. It has great suspense, and characters that you will become invested in.

Seabound (Seabound Chronicles, #1) by Jordan Rivet

Now starting the YA Mystery/Suspense~ Forget Me by K.A. Harrington

Just finished the excellent ~ Justice at Cardwell Ranch (Cardwell Ranch #2) by B.J. Daniels

The first book in the series Crime Scene At Cardwell Ranch (Cardwell Ranch #1) by B.J. Daniels had some scattered swears and one not too detailed sex scene, but this second book has nothing like that.

QNPoohBear | 19 comments Just finished Murder at Rough Point (Gilded Newport Mysteries, #4) by Alyssa Maxwell , the latest entry in the Gilded Age Newport murder mystery series. This one borrows from Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. If you like that plot but want a more historical setting, also read Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas (Regency) and The Twelve Clues of Christmas (1930s).

I recommend the whole series. They're funny and entertaining as well as good mysteries. I love Georgie. 12 Clues is towards the end of the series so far. I enjoyed that one best of all the series so far, I think. It looks like my review got eaten so I'll have to add it back in.

I actually prefer more modern day reads over the Regency era,[though several from that era are also on my Favorites bookshelf] but the synopsis is what attracted me to that particular book. :D

Those both sound good. I already have 'Crewel World' on my TBR list.

QNPoohBear | 19 comments I just finished Miss Dimple Rallies to the Cause. This series, set during WWII, is a throwback to the Golden Age of mysteries as far as I can gather from what I've read. Miss Dimple is very non-nonsense and clever. She teaches first grade so she has strict notions about what is proper so you won't see anything on page that the teachers wouldn't want their students to hear about.

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 6 comments I enjoyed Clammed Up (A Maine Clambake Mystery, #1) by Barbara Ross and hope to read the second book soon. I also am hoping to read more Rhys Bowen before the end of the year...either For the Love of Mike (Molly Murphy Mysteries, #3) by Rhys Bowen or A Royal Pain (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #2) by Rhys Bowen . I'll also be reading at least one of Anne Perry's Christmas mysteries in December.

For contemporary mystery, I tend to grab a Christian suspense book, since I (usually) know what I'm getting with those.

I'm currently reading Mortal Arts (Lady Darby, #2) by Anna Lee Huber , which is good but heavy, as it deals with the MC trying to help the main suspect, who suffers from PTSD (then only a ticket to the loony bin), and who she does not think did it. Interesting angle with a mystery, trying to prove a suspect innocent...

I plan to try The Twelve Clues Of Christmas by Rhys Bowen soon.

The Twelve Clues of Christmas (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #6) by Rhys Bowen

I have enjoyed some Christian suspense such as the excellent ~
The Edge of Recall by Kristen Heitzmann

but I try to avoid religious proselytizing.

If you start there, you'll be spoiled for the romantic subplot but that is one of the better entries in a great series. I just love Georgie!

I don't have time to read anything right now but I have a long list for winter.

Oh good, I'm glad I picked a good one to start with.

I don't have much time to read, summer or fall, because of interacting with family friends then, but it just takes me longer to finish the books that I do start, haha!

QNPoohBear | 19 comments I picked up A Most Novel Revenge. I have some days off next week - I hope and plan to read it then. The first book was Ok. I didn't like the mistrustful relationship between the married sleuths but the second book was better.

I just finished my ~fist legal thriller by John Grisham~ The Whistler by John Grisham . It was interesting, but not as "thrilling" as I had hoped for. Did appreciate that there were only a few scattered-mild curses.
Next up~ Outfoxed (Andy Carpenter, #14) by David Rosenfelt

message 16: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 6 comments Finished Mortal Arts (Lady Darby, #2) by Anna Lee Huber . A few mild curses near the end (d*, h*). Otherwise good...four stars.

I'd agree about reading the Royal Spyness mysteries in order.

I gave The Whistler by John Grisham 4 stars but really 3 1/2 and Outfoxed (Andy Carpenter, #14) by David Rosenfelt rates the same.

I have an Amish mystery checked out so it will probably be next up~ Where Secrets Sleep (House of Secrets #1) by Marta Perry

QNPoohBear | 19 comments I just read The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett for the first time. I loved the movies. The book is a little different but I enjoyed it. It's not gory except for one passage on cannibalism which has no relevance to the plot at all. There is a lot of drinking (during Prohibition) and some references to drug use.

message 29: by Libby (new)

Libby Have you all read any of "The Cat who..." series? Forgive me if I am repeating someone else's recommendations. I searched the bookshelves and they weren't on it. No sex , but there may be some very infrequent very mild cussing, though I can't recall any.
The Cat Who Could Read Backwards
The Cat Who Saw Red
There are over 20 in the series and began being written in the late 60's and continued through 2008 at least.

I have added the first "Cat Who" book to my TBR list to see how I like it.

Pamela, I started "The Ice Twins" and I think it will be a Favorite.
Sadly, I could not finish 'The Ice Twins' for the crude talk and pervasive profanity!

Re: Pamela, Yes, it really irks me when reviewers don't even mention that a book contains such elements, that's why I do, even if it's just to mention that there are only a few occurrences in a book.
I appreciate a heads up, so I assume that other readers do as well.

message 36: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I just finished reading kingdom come by Jane Jensen. I didn't care for the theme of the murder; but, the finally development in resolving the mystery was very well written and detailed. The second book; is so different from the first book. In the Land of Milk and Honey (Elizabeth Harris Mystery #2) by Jane Jensen i the theme is one of amish farmers and the mystery of trying to resolve the public becoming ill and some deaths because of amish farming. I am enjoying this different theme, and author. She hasn't wrote a lot of books, because she also publishes games; and is an author of romance under the name Eli Easton.

Carolyn TO READ Death on Eat Street (Biscuit Bowl Food Truck Mystery #1) by J.J. Cook I have not seen a series on food trucks; even getting popular on tv cook shows; 'the food truck race'
this has a great rating and reviews as being fun and Enjoyable

message 39: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn In the Land of Milk and Honey (Elizabeth Harris Mystery #2) by Jane Jensen , this is gong to be a favorite read for 2017. The author Jane Jensen, hasn't done many books; (she does games, also) but, I find this mystery unique in an amish rural setting with a unique theme to storyline and suspense filled into book.

I really enjoyed it. If you like Downton Abbey, suffragette heroines, plucky and devoted ladies' maids you will enjoy this one. The first murder happens before the story begins and the one that happens happens way off page and Frances is asked to come to the scene. There's one barroom brawl scene. Most of the violence mentioned in the story was conducted during the Boer War.

Hmmm, your profile says~"Member Since December 2015", and my group's self-promotion rules are shown to all new group members when they first attempt to post, plus the rules for authors are posted in the discussion under 'Intoductions'.

These rules are to prevent the Forums from becoming useless to readers for book suggestions and reviews because of SPAMMING by authors promoting their own books, as what happened at the wonderful Amazon forums, so that they had to ban all author self-promotion, and restrict it from all forums, except the Meet Our Authors Forum. They were promoting their books in every single thread, regardless of not even being in the genre that readers were requesting suggestions of titles for!

When one creates a new group on GR we generally include requirements to be met before we allow any author self-promotion in our group for the reason stated.

QNPoohBear | 19 comments I read most of the stories in Summer Snoops and Cozy Crimes: 12 Mysteries for the Dog Days of Summer. 12 mysteries for the price of 1 plus it benefits pet rescue. I prefer the cozy mysteries but not all of them are cozy. I also read Murder on the SS Rosa: a cozy historical mystery - a novella. This one is cozy but has lots of historical details. Being set in the 1920s, the characters also have to deal with the aftermath of WWI and that may make future books more deep than the average cozy.
