Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Welcome to your team for this week's read-a-thon Group Bingo Challenge. This thread is totally yours, so feel free to take time to learn more about the members of your team, discuss books and activities for the read-a-thon, and to plan your strategy for tackling the challenge.

Your goal is to complete most of the categories on the Bingo card (we'll be super impressed if you get them all!) by working with the members of your team. Some squares are a team effort (with a maximum per member contribution indicated between the brackets), others can be done individually to help push your team closer to their goal. Pay attention to the card as you're working out your plan because any square that has a red starred square cannot be overlapped with any other red starred squares. Any square with a blue star cannot be overlapped with any other blue starred square. And any yellow star symbol cannot be overlapped with any other yellow starred square.

EXAMPLE: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
This book could be used to check off quite a few squares -- female author, set in the summer, YA book, part of a series, etc. Since there is no overlapping, as a team you would need to decide which square to assign this particular read to. It could not be used to check off multiple starred squares. You could, however, count it towards your groups overall page count (O1), towards your 10 books read (B1), or any other non-starred square.

There is a Mod assigned to each team to help with any questions, comments, or concerns. We recommend you come together, as a team, and pick some team captains to help do re-caps and keep track of what your team is working on and what progress you've made. Mods will be exempt from this role.

As a team member, it will be your job to check in with your team as you start and complete tasks to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Feel free to add a tab for your own progress!

When you finish a book, write it down in black in front of every category it could fit in, at the end we will decide for which it is best put to use!

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I'm at work, but I can't wait to start so here are the prompts I think I can contribute to:

B1: I'm going to try to read at least 4 books.
B2: Fables, although in French it is call "Les Fables", so I don't know if it truly fits. Zaz, what do you think?
B3: I'm going to read almost only books for ATY
B4: Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang is sci-fi
B5: Face Paint: The Story of Makeup by Lisa Eldridge

I1: I love those game, so I can definitely contribute
I2: it is not in my ATY list, but I can read Saga, Volume 3 if need be

N1: I have green Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm and yellow Big Fish A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Daniel Wallace .
N2: the weather is going to be good in Switzerland this week, yay
N3: obviously, though I need to think about it
N4: definitely, I already listened to 1 hour of The Forgotten Garden this morning
N5: Zaz, do you think a fable can count as a poem? I'd say yes...

G1: maybe
G3: yes
G4: I don't know if I'm going to have time, but I could finish The Forgotten Garden, which I started last week
G5: let's hope so ;)

O1: yes I think so
O2: I think Face Paint: The Story of Makeup can qualify, if I don't use if for another category
O4: maybe
O5: yes

message 4: by Zaz (last edited Aug 28, 2016 10:21AM) (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Hi everyone, I hope you'll have fun with the read-a-thon :)

Sophie, for Fables, I don't know why they didn't translate it as The Fables (argh, translators), so for me it shouldn't count, but we can decide at the end of the week if nobody read a one title book :)
I'm not sure about a fable as a poem, for me it's more a short story. I don't remember if there are rhymes (if not, it can't count :p).

I'll work too, so my contribution won't be huge, but I'm open to everything so I'll check all the squares I can.

My plan for the moment:
B1: I think I'll finish 3 books (with one ongoing) so I'll do my 2.
B2: Nothing for the moment.
B3: I'm going to read one book for AtY.
B4: Flowers for Algernon is scifi, but I'd prefer to use it for the Rainbow as red isn't an usual color.
B5: My scheduled books are male authors.

I1: I'll contribute.
I2: I'll read a graphic novel or a manga for sure.
I3: Not scheduled but can add one if needed.
I4: No idea as I didn't start the books.
I5: Not scheduled.

N1: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (so red)
N2: I'll read a little outside if the weather is nice.
N4: Around 1h for me per day, so I'll do my 5h.
N5: I can if needed, but nothing scheduled.

G1: Maybe.
G2: I'll read the novella UnStrung for sure.
G3: Yes.
G4: I'll finish The Ask and the Answer.

O1: I'll read at least 500p.
O2: Nope.
O3: My AtY book is YA, so it can be used for both square.
O4: The Ask and the Answer can work if needed.
O5: Yes.

Pages Read: 997 (not counting audio and graphic novel)
Audio: 5,25h/5.
Time read outside: 1h20min
Read straight for one hour: 1
Books Read: 4 novels + 1 graphic novel + 1 short story
Books for ATY: 1
Book/Story finished in one sitting: 0
Book recommendation: More Than This
Read-a-Thon games done: I think I did all of them.

Lieke | 697 comments Hi team Lemon! :)

I started my overview but accidently lost it.
But I'm currently reading three books I want to finish this week and they can be used for several prompts.
My books:
- How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
- The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa
- Het Dolende Schip (The mad ship) by Robin Hobb

I'll try to make the complete overview again later today.

message 6: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Hi Team Lemon!
I got the last spot... Wuhu! I'll be doing as much reading as I can, but the first two days I maybe a little busy since I'm celebrating my birthday and tomorrow I have work and dinner plans with my mum and sister.

I'm working on two books and I'll definitely finish them this week and hopefully one more.
I'm reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr which could be used for N1 - the blue color in the rainbow.
And I'm reading The Last Kingdom (The Saxon Stories, #1) by Bernard Cornwell . Maybe that's an O2 - historical.

If the books can be used in a better way, then we'll do that!

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Welcome to team Lemon Marina and happy birthday!!!

message 8: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 82 comments Happy Birthday, Marina!

I've got a few books I need to finish this week:

B1: I think I'll finish 4-5 books - I'm off so I have lots of time this week.
B2: Nothing for the moment.
B3: I'm going to read one book for AtY.
B4: Am trying to finish A Dance with Dragons
B5: I have at least 2 female authors to finish

I1: Sure!
I2: Not likely
I3: I will have one to start
I4: Nothing yet, but will see
I5: My series book is so it will have to be determined which square to use it for

N1: My series book is blue.
N2: If the weather holds, I have a great chair for reading outside.
N4: I have 2 audiobooks on the go, so will definitely meet 5 hours
N5: My first book to finish is a poetry/short story book! My Home As I Remember

G1: Not likely but I can try
G2: Will try to read another short story book as well.
G3: Yes.
G4: I have 3 to finish.

O1: Definitely - the Game of Thones itself will be over 400 pgs to finish
O2: Potentially - not sure yet.
O3: I'm going to read The Red Pony
O4: Both A Dance with Dragons and The Red Pony would work
O5: Will try

message 9: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Thank you guys :)

What is our tactic? Should we go after the squares with stars or would it be better ticking off as many squares with one book as possible?

message 10: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments I say shoot for the stars! I am about to finish one book today and start another one as soon as I get home from work! I have 4 books I am shooting to finish for G4 and one is 800+ pages!

They do rime, so I'd think they would count, but since Sam's reading poetry, no need to sweat on it ;)

And I agree, we can see at the end of the week for the one-word title.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments As soon as I arrive home, I'm going to do an overview of what we can easily achieve and for which category we need help for you flexible people! It's going to be fun fun fun!

message 17: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 82 comments Where do we record what we've read, # of pages and what squares the book is good for?

I just finished my poetry/short story book - My Home As I Remember - completed 84 pages today. It's shelved as short story but there are more poems in the book than short stories - strange.

I was also lucky to enjoy 2 uninterrupted hours of reading - the joy of holidays when the kids are away!

message 18: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments I'll come up with a better plan for my reading tomorrow. I hope that's okay with you Guys

message 19: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I have an idea for an overall progress post for the team, writing down the options for each category, when they are completed and by whom (I had to fight myself not to create a spreadsheet haha).

But I don't know how everyone should record their own progress... Do you have suggestions?

(You can also sneak peak on the other team topics for inspiration ;) ).

message 20: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 82 comments A spreadsheet might actually be a great idea :) We can put the bingo squares on the sheet and have people record their progress on different tabs/ worksheets. If we put the link to the Google sheets in the first post, it would be easy to access.

message 21: by Keri (last edited Aug 22, 2016 09:21AM) (new)

Keri Hello Team Lemon!!! I'm so excited to be apart of the team! I don't work but do have a 6 month old daughter who keeps me pretty busy. The weather for the week here in Texas is showing rain so don't think I'll be able to contribute to reading outside. :( I also don't have any audio books. I should be able to help out with quite a few other squares though! I'll post again once I can get in front of my computer with those squares.

I think a spreadsheet is a wonderful idea! Happy to be here and looking forward to reading more, I've gotten too involved with the TV lately, lol! Happy Birthday Marina!

message 22: by Sophie (last edited Aug 22, 2016 09:55AM) (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Thanks guys for accepting my spreadsheet craziness!

You can find it here. I set the parameters so that anyone with the link should be able to modify it, feel free to add your own page to record your progress!

I chose to write a category per line so we can record several books per category, but feel free to modify or suggest a different organization!

message 23: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments Sophie do you want us to fill it in as we go or do you want us to fill it in as we can complete the square?

message 24: by Keri (new)

Keri B1-Finish 10 Books - This shouldn't be a problem!
B2-Read Something with a One-Word Title - Mermaid
B3-Read 5 Books for the ATY Challenge - All the books I have listed are for the ATY Challenge. If need be I can read other books though too.
B4-Read a Sci-Fi or Fantasy - No, I am not much of a Sci-Fi or Fantasy reader so I don't really have any at the ready.
B5-Read 2 Books by a Female Author - I have a few on my list that I could read.

I1-Complete Every Read-a-Thon Game - I'll participate as much as I can
I2-Read 2 Graphic Novels or Manga - I have one I have been meaning to read for a long time now so yes!
I3-Read a Book in a Series - Yes, Written in Fire
I4-Read 2 Books Set in Summer - Not sure. Not scheduled.
I5-Read a Mystery or Thriller - Yes I have a couple on my list

N1-Read the Rainbow - I was hoping this would be violet but maybe its more blue? What do ya'll think??? I think I have one for orange too if needed. Remember Jamie Baker (Jamie Baker, #3) by Kelly Oram
N2-Read Outside for 6 Hours - We have rain listed in the forecast for most of the week. Plus this would be difficult with my baby.
N3-Every Team Member Recommends a Book to the Team - Sure!
N4-Listen to 20 Hours of Audiobooks - No
N5-Read a Poem - No.

G1-Finish a Book or Story in One Sitting - Maybe, would another graphic novel count??
G2-Read 3 Short Stories or Novellas - I could find one if needed
G3-5 Members Read for 1 Hour Straight - Possibly if I can get the baby down for a decent nap.
G4-Finish 3 Books Started Before the Read-a-Thon - Yes
G5-Strategize with Your Group - Of course!

O1-Read 4000 Pages - I can definitely contribute to this!
O2-Read Something Historical - Dollface: A Novel of the Roaring Twenties
O3-Read a YA, Middle Grade, or Children's Book - I have tons of children's books so yes!
O4-Read a Book with an Article in the Title - Yes, shouldn't be too hard.
O5-Add 3 Books to the ATY Reading Map - I'm sure we can do this easily enough!

Ok questions!

Since we have the spreadsheet is each person just going to go in and put what boxes they can complete or will we have a team captain who puts together who should cover which box?

For the book I am currently reading does it only count for the finish book currently reading or can it goes towards another box as well?

message 25: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments I say we need to have a team captain to maintain the spreadsheet and say what we need to complete so it will get finished faster.

message 26: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I don't know what you think, but I wanted to write down maybe in grey the possibilities you all wrote down and when it's done we can write it in black so we can see if one book is best used for one category instead of another... Gosh, don't know if it makes sense! haha

message 27: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments haha y'all just tell me what I need to complete for the team and I will do it!

message 28: by Keri (new)

Keri I agree with Heather. I can help with the boxes that I wrote down but obviously can't do ALL of them. Reading is never a waste of time but I would hate for a box to get missed because we aren't keeping track well enough.

message 29: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I completed the table with what you wrote up here, don't hesitate to add things if I forgot! Sometimes I didn't know the title, so I put an ?

We seem to be missing 2 books set in summer and an orange cover!

message 30: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Keri, it's a perfect violet :) (it's a difficult color, it's not used often).

Heather, do you have an orange cover in your TBR? A book set during summer would be helpful too as for the moment nobody has one scheduled.

Yey for the spreadsheet :D Sophie can update when a square is finished on her first post, so we'll also have a view here.
I added a table under the bingo card on the file so everyone can update the pages, number of books and hours and there's a sum at the end so we'll have a quick view of where we are.

message 31: by Sophie (last edited Aug 22, 2016 11:08AM) (new)

message 33: by Marina (new)

Marina | 1312 comments Wow, you've planned most of our reading already.... Go team Lemon :-)

I'll be listening to The Icebound Land this week. It fits several if the squares witb stars, but I don't know what you'll prefer. The posibilities are: B4, I3, O3 or O4.
The two other books I'm working on also fits more than one star.

Should I add my books to the spreadsheet or is someone in charge?

The weather should be pretty good this week in Denmark, so I could probably read outside for gwo hours.

message 34: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I think it's easier if everybody add their books and then I check if they're all here. I tend to go too fast and then forget some ;)

Just read Face Paint: The Story of Makeup for an hour straight, it is very interesting! Did you know that they used to wear toxic stuff like lead, arsenic and mercury on the skin to whiten it? Of course it damaged the skin, then they had to wear more, which would worsen the condition and also cause hair loss (it's a hypothesis for the fashion of very high foreheads in the past).
And now people are freaking out about seemingly harmless product like natural parabens...

message 35: by Keri (last edited Aug 22, 2016 12:47PM) (new)

Keri Do you mean add the books here in a comment or on the spreadsheet?

Got the baby down and was also able to read for over an hour straight of the book After You. 50 pages!

message 36: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Sorry, I'm getting tired it's time to go to sleep ;) I meant here and in the spreadsheet, but maybe I ask to much, do as you prefer!

message 37: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 82 comments I just finished After the War Is Over by Jennifer Robson - After the War Is Over by Jennifer Robson. Not sure where it will fit in - do we need a tab for extra books?

message 38: by Zaz (last edited Aug 22, 2016 01:54PM) (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Female author or finish a book started before the read-a-thon?

I finished one audio, The Problem with Forever, I added my listening count for it, but I don't want to use it for another square. I'm jumping in another audio but I won't finish it this week (it's 31h long)! It's a scifi: Seveneves.

message 39: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 82 comments I forgot we had Female author as one of the squares - I put it under that but could be moved to started before the read-a-thon if we have other female authors to use. Thanks for reminding me! :)

Nicole | 0 comments So I think I might have the yellow book for the rainbow covered. Before the marathon started I was on page 215 in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I just updated my progress on Goodreads and it said I was at 62%. This means it could count towards the read-a-thon!

message 43: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Sorry to interrupt your collaboration efforts, Team Lemon, but I had to modify the card. I'm very sorry. I know you're all working hard and plotting it out but after several questions on this I felt the instructions were too vague and I wanted to make sure everyone was playing the same game. Unfortunately, when I make these things, it can be difficult to anticipate how you guys will read them and what questions you will have so what makes sense in my head doesn't always translate well. Hopefully this card modification will make things clearer.

Some squares were designed to overlap. Some squares were not. The change is:

Any square that has a red starred square cannot be overlapped with any other red starred squares. Any square with a blue star cannot be overlapped with any other blue starred square. And any yellow star symbol cannot be overlapped with any other yellow starred square.

Hopefully it is early enough to not too negatively impact your game plan. I apologize if it has. :x

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments No problem Emm, it's clearer that way!

I put books in italic when they can fit several categories of the same color, so it's going to be easier to chose which book goes where in the end.

Do you all agree if we consider N5 poetry done by Sam with My Home as I remember and O3 done by Keri with If you take a mouse to school?

Heather | 236 comments I definitely have an orange book and some set in summer too that won't overlap!

Great Heather, it'd be very helpful :D

As I can't recommend Hollow World, I'll recommend More Than This and everything by Ness in fact. This one mixes several genres, addresses interesting topics and leads you where you didn't expect.
