Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Welcome to your team for this week's read-a-thon Group Bingo Challenge. This thread is totally yours, so feel free to take time to learn more about the members of your team, discuss books and activities for the read-a-thon, and to plan your strategy for tackling the challenge.

Your goal is to complete most of the categories on the Bingo card (we'll be super impressed if you get them all!) by working with the members of your team. Some squares are a team effort (with a maximum per member contribution indicated between the brackets), others can be done individually to help push your team closer to their goal. Pay attention to the card as you're working out your plan because the squares with a * (star) cannot be overlapped with any other starred squares. The non-squared squares cannot overlap with any other non-starred square.

EXAMPLE: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
This book could be used to check off quite a few squares -- female author, set in the summer, YA book, part of a series, etc. Since there is no overlapping, as a team you would need to decide which square to assign this particular read to. It could not be used to check off multiple starred squares. You could, however, count it towards your groups overall page count (O1), towards your 10 books read (B1), or any other non-starred square.

There is a Mod assigned to each team to help with any questions, comments, or concerns. We recommend you come together, as a team, and pick some team captains to help do re-caps and keep track of what your team is working on and what progress you've made. Mods will be exempt from this role.

As a team member, it will be your job to check in with your team as you start and complete tasks to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Andrea | 456 comments Greetings to all! This is my first Read-A-Thon, and I am quite excited. I plan to start reading Necessity and follow with Faust. Necessity qualifies for many of the squares, while I do believe that Faust, one of my ATY challenges, will fulfill the poem square. If I finish these, then I will read whatever the team needs!

As far as a book recommendation goes, this is tough because I have many books that I love. Cloud Atlas, The Sympathizer, The Phantom Tollbooth, and various Vonnegut titles are among them. I suppose that this task will gain importance as we near board completion. :)

Well, I am off to read. Good luck, everyone!

message 3: by Elín Birna (new)

Elín Birna (elinbirna) | 113 comments Hello Andrea, and everyone else! I'm also really excited :) This is the first readathon I'm able to fully participate in (although I will have some overnight guests during the week, so Tuesday/Wednesday won't be super active read days for me), it's going to be very interesting and fun!
I guess the books I've started before this readathon can count towards all the squares except those on reading time and pages?

I will be reading Dark Places, which can fulfill the mystery box or maybe the "book started before the readathon", The Complete Persepolis, which can fulfill the graphic novel box, and probably some more books that can be placed in some of the boxes.

I'll start thinking about some recommendations to give! Happy reading!

message 4: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I'm here with you, team! I'm doing so many challenges and have so many books on my to-read list that I will make an awesome filler. Whatever we need more of, I'll read. ;D

message 5: by Mimmi (last edited Aug 22, 2016 03:48AM) (new)

Mimmi Hi! This is my first readathon on Goodreads, I'm a little late since I'm in Sweden and we're 6 hours ahead here. For this readathon I mainly want to focus on finishing a couple library books that need to be returned by the end of this week. But I'll read other things if it's needed to complete the challenges. I think the whole bingo thing is really fun, I love when there's reading challenges in readathons. Anyway I thought I would include a list of the books I am planning to read this week. Obviously I'll read other things so that we can complete the challenges.

How to lead a life of crime, Kirsten Miller- I only have about 60 pages left of this one, article in the title.

All these things I’ve done, Gabrielle Zevin- I started it but am only 60 pages in at the moment, could count for ''read a book in a series'' and also a book I started before the readathon. Don't know if it's considered a sci-fi or fantasy, or just dystopia. It's also YA and written by a female author.

The silver linings playbook, Matthew Quick- yellow cover, article in the title.

Dietland, Sarai Walker- one word challenge, female author, blue cover.

Tease, Amanda Maciel- one word challenge, female author

The first fifteen lives of Harry August, Claire North- sci-fi or fantasy book, female author, blue cover, article in the title.

I'm also going to be listening to Lord of the flies on audiobook, so that will help with the audiobook goal and add 3 books to the AtY challenge.

message 6: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I'm also intending to finish some of my library books. I currently have 4 sitting beside me, and another 6 that came in! I definitely won't be able to get to them all...plus I just bought Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, so I'm definitely reading that first!

I won't be much help with the audiobook goal, or the one to read outside. I actually hate reading outside because I can't find anywhere comfortable.

What I'm intending to read so far (we can see where they'll fit in):
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - article in the title, yellow cover, part of a series, female author
Love Letters to the Dead - YA, female author, for ATY
Devoted - one word title, female author, YA

Those two books (aside from Harry Potter) are due back to the library soon, so I want to get them out of the way first. But I have many other kinds of books coming (including a novella, a graphic novel, and a play).

Actually, what I'm most looking forward to is getting recommendations from everyone. I've been trying to fill in some of my rejects list categories just to get an idea of what the final list might look like, and there are so many calling for recommendations/someone choose for you! I tried posting on Facebook, but none of my friends seem to be big readers.

message 7: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Hello, Team Cherry! I am so excited for this read-a-thon. I was almost late to work because I was too busy reading all the posts. I'm thinking it makes good sense to have a post on here for each of the bingo blocks. Then we can track each category individually and people will know where to look to see what has been done as a team. We can list all books that fit each category, and then at the end of the week figure out our final answers. Does that sound good? I'll make a post for each of the squares. And then we can go from there. Happy reading!

I love the card you made, Elín Birna. I'll add it to the FINAL CARD post.

If you guys have improvements on how to track things, put them up.

I'm so excited by this that I can barely concentrate on work, ha.

message 40: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments Hi guys! I am reading now instead of getting ready for work... :)

I am about to finish Solaris, which would work for science fiction

My next read is The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side, which is a mystery and for the Aty challenge, female author, article in title

I am also reading Moby Dick but I can put that on hold, and How to Read Novels Like a Professor A Jaunty Exploration of the World's Favorite Literary Form by Thomas C. Foster - which I would like to read but does not fit with the categories - I suppose the cover is green and brown, does that count for green?

Others in deck that I coukd read if the team wants me to:
- Fluke Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore has a blue cover
- milk and honey by Rupi Kaur is a book of poems
- The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir is historical fiction

message 43: by Mimmi (new)

Mimmi I read for an hour outside and finished my first book. I only had like 60 pages left of it so I don't know if it's allowed to count for anything? The whole book was 430 pages so it can't count for the "read a book you started before the readathon".

message 44: by Katie (last edited Aug 22, 2016 07:56AM) (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Awesome Debra. I updated the post for G3.

Anyone else here super competitive? Or is it just me. Go #teamcherry!

My recommendations. I have 2. I am one of those people who rarely gives 5 star ratings to books. They really have to blow me away. I've only given 5 stars to 6 of the 130 books I've read so far this year. Two of those I want to recommend to you.

The first is Salt to the Sea. It's a new release about WWII. It has 4 narrators so it would work for next year's challenge on the multiple POV prompt. It tells the story of an event from WWII that I had never heard of before. It's a quick read and beautifully written.

The other is The Palace of Illusions. It is a retelling of the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. It's grand in scope and has elements of mythology and magic. I did consult the Wikipedia page for The Mahabharata a bit because I don't know the story at all, but I loved that it was a retelling. I felt like I learned a lot about Indian literary history.

message 45: by Mimmi (new)

Mimmi While I'm at it, I might aswell recommend a book. It's actually the one I just finished, How to Lead a Life of Crime by Kirsten Miller. I gave this one 4.5 out of 5 stars and really enjoyed it. Since I just started getting into reading again this year I unfortunately haven't had a lot of 5 star reads. I just don't really know what genres or types of books I really like yet, I'm finding out more and more the more books I read. But this one is definitely one of my favourite books I've read so far this year. Another one that stands out to me is Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. I'm not super into contemporary but I really enjoyed this one, gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

message 46: by Joann (new)

Joann Hi team!
This is my first read a thon and looking forward to it very much.
I have one book I'll hopefully finish today, so could be used for that category.
I have three others I want to read this week and An audiobook on the go.
I will be reading outside, I will read for an hour straight, will listen to an audiobook, read a book set in summer, female author, a mystery, part of a series, historical fiction.
I won't be reading anything for the ATY challenge, no graphic novels or manga, no children's or YA, no sci-fi or fantasy.

As for recommendations, my recent 5 star reads include The Kite Runner, The Thirteenth Tale and the Lady Darby series if you enjoy historical fiction.

message 47: by Debra (last edited Aug 22, 2016 09:16AM) (new)

Debra Barstad ok finished the book a child called it and now moving on to another book.

A really good book that I read this year that I would recommend would be is he dead by rick drew. this is a true crime book and it is not for the faint at heart. I was so mad and wanted to get revenge after reading this book that it just shows how sick some people are in this world. Like I said this is not a book for young people or those that are faint at heart. Is He Dead?

so g1 is finished

message 48: by Debra (new)

Debra Barstad ok finished this bookLong Way Down
this could be used as a short story, finish book, a mystery,

this book combined with the first one will give me 147 pages read so far

I'll actually probably be doing a lot of audio today as we have another surprise for the group today that I've got to organize. Mwahaha.

Also, just to make sure I don't forget to get my recommendation in ... Kindred by Octavia Butler is solid blend of sci-fi/historical fiction. It's about a modern-day black woman who is transported back in time over and over again to save the life of a white slave-owning ancestor. It's so good!
