It's time to start thinking about fun tasks for the Challenge. The bonus theme is "A Year of Art: Folk Art"

As in past challenges, some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of fall or autumn. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of these themes, they’re just fun ideas for unique reading challenges.

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don't worry about repeating what another player might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10, and 15 point tasks. This thread will be open for ideas until August 19. Fall tasks will begin to be posted on August 20th. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments a book that has culture as a genre

a book where community plays a role (i.e a small town setting)

cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal are typical types of folk art, but also similar to anniversary gifts - maybe tie a task to types of gifts (or do it as one of the 5 point/10 point tasks)

learning techniques through new skills - a NF about a skill you'd like to learn

art of the everyday - a book cover that has an item you use every day on it

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments This site lists some of the best (in her opinion) museums/galleries to see Folk Art in the world. How about a book set in one of these countries (one you don't already live in) http://travel.allwomenstalk.com/place....

Folk artists are traditionally those who are not formally trained in art. So, maybe a book by an author who had no formal training in writing? Like these - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07....

A colorful book cover (folk art usually colorful)

Author shares a name with a famous folk music artist - http://folkmusic.about.com/od/artists...

September is Hispanic Heritage month, so, a book set in Latin America or written by a Latin American author.

Here is a 'Best Books to read in Autumn' list - https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1....

October 6th is Mad Hatter Day, so, either a book inspired by Alice in Wonderland, or one with Mental Illness/Health as a MPG.

message 4: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3682 comments Autumn is also harvest time, so what about a harvest task? eg a book where the title (and subtitle) contains all the letters of the word HARVEST, or where the author's initials can be found in it. Or maybe a book which has either fields, crops (corn, wheat, etc) or fruit and vegetables.

message 6: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2721 comments I was also thinking about folk music:
Read a book with a banjo, acoustic guitar, dulcimer or harmonica on the cover
The Weavers were influential in the folk revival in the U.S. - read a book where an author shares first or last name with one of the members (Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays) or read a book about weaving or other textile work.

October 24th is United Nations Day: read a book set in more than one country or a book about negotiating an end to a war.

Read a book with main page genre "folk" or "folklore"

Jennifer W | 466 comments I haven't been very active this season's challenge, for a variety of reasons. A big one is because I've primarily been reading the monster of a book, Alexander Hamilton. It's the basis of the hit musical, Hamilton. Read a book that has been turned into a musical.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4448 comments From Wikipedia: Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture

Read a book by an author who is of any indigenous or native people group.

WIKI page may help identify the groups considered indigenous or native.

message 9: by Katie (new)

Katie | 241 comments November 11 is the 98th anniversary of the signing of the armistice to end World War I. Read a book about or set during World War I.

message 10: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) 1- With our US presidential election coming up this fall, read a main page genre of either politics, American history, or dystopia or a biography of a political leader.

2- With school starting, read a book on a required (or suggested) reading list for students (are there lists available?) or a classic.

3 - September, October, & November all have the same ending (ber). Read a book a) by an author whose first and last name end in the same letter or b) author's name or word in title includes -ber or c) by the same author (or same first or last name) as one you read last season.

message 11: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 1668 comments 1)Disney's Moana is released in November: Read a book with a main genre of Travel, or read a book that takes place on the high seas

2)Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them comes out in November. Read a book with a mythical creature in it.

3) Halloween: Read a book with main genre of Horror

message 12: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 890 comments Pam suggested books on a required or suggested reading list for students. The National Association of Scholars has two lists. One of books they recommend for college common reading programs at https://www.nas.org/resources/recomme... and the first page of https://www.nas.org/images/documents/... has the actual most popular books.

message 13: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 1668 comments A lot of words describe Autumn/Fall: Read a book with one of these words in the title from the list.
http://descriptivewords.org/descripti...

message 14: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 987 comments Read a book in a series that is .5 eg 0.5, 1.5 ,2.5 etc
Since most of these are novellas the page count would still need to fit SRC rules, perhaps it could be a 5 point book to fit.

message 15: by Paula (new)

Paula S (paula_s) | 642 comments I associate folk art with textile art: quilting, embroidery, knitting, etc. Maybe read a book where textile art features prominently.

This fall we are expecting a large harvest of apples from our trees. Apples can inspire several themes:
* school (read a book that takes place in a school?)
* harvest (read a book that features an apple or an apple pie on the cover)
* A poisoned apple can be used for bothfairytales (read a fairy tales or fairy tale retelling) and murder (read a mystery that features a poisoning)

Disney's Moana has already been mentioned. It takes place in the south Pacific. Maybe read a book from or about that region?

message 16: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) The largest folk art market in the world is held annually in Santa Fe, NM. Part of their mission is to "...create intercultural exchange opportunities that unite the peoples of the world." Read a book 1) set in New Mexico; 2) with a MPG of culture, history, world lit, or utopia; 3) featuring more than 1 distinct culture; 4) market scene or world on the cover; 5) Santa Fe's nickname is The City Different. Choose a book with one of these words (or variation) in the title/subtitle: City, Different, Exchange, Opportunity, Unite, People, World, Folk, Art, Market.

message 17: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) I like Julia's folk instrument on the cover idea. I would also include the fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, and bass. Another cover task could be any type of folk art (pretty broad definition).

message 18: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 1307 comments A book that has the letters F-O-L-K in any order in the title.

message 19: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 2469 comments Whenever this season comes around I am reminded of the difference between American English (Fall) and British English (Autumn). I found this list of words that differ between the two; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_o... - task could be to read a book with a title containing one of these words. Or a word from this list which focuses on words spelled/spelt differently http://www.tysto.com/uk-us-spelling-l...

Another use of the fall/autumn conundrum could be to find a book that has been published under different titles - e.g. one that changed title to match a movie release The Golden Compass vs Northern Lights or to suit international audiences Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone vs Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone or just because the title was not quite right Ten Little Indians vs And Then There Were None

For both suggestions you could use either version of the word/book

message 20: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) Oktoberfest - Read a book originally published in German, set in Germany, or by a German author.

NaNoWriMo is in November. (Who has time to write when you are reading all the time?!) Read a book by an author with the same first, middle, or last name as you or by your favorite author.

Oct 10 is World Mental Health Day. Read a book with a mental health aspect or MPG of health, psychology, philosophy, or religion.

message 21: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 1668 comments September 25- October 1, 2016 is Banned Book week
1) Read a book that has been banned and/or challenged
2) Read a book with a Diverse main character in recognition that we need more representation in books.

September is back-to-school time
Read a book off of Penguin Modern Classics
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

October
Read a book off of Best Books to Read for Halloween!
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

November and Thanksgiving
It's starting to get COLD, so reread an old favorite book that you're thankful to have on hand

message 22: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (shixam) Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children comes out at the end of September.

You could go with a bird theme for one challenge, either a bird(s) on the cover, or the word "bird" or a type of bird in the title.

Or you could do something with Tim Burton's name, since he's directing it. Like read a book by an author with the initials T.B. Or read a book whose title includes all the letters in either T-I-M or B-U-R-T-O-N.

message 23: by Lisa (last edited Aug 13, 2016 10:20PM) (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1535 comments The National Book Festival is an annual event held in Washington, D.C., sponsored by The Library of Congress, to celebrate authors and readers. First Lady Laura Bush and Librarian of Congress James H. Billington founded the event in 2001. For many years it was held on the Mall, but it is now housed in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. September 24th marks its 16th anniversary. There will be many authors appearing and signing books. Even if you can't attend this mammoth festival, join in celebrating the joy and power of reading by reading a book by one of this years participating authors:

message 24: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1535 comments Folk artists often learn their skills and techniques through apprenticeships. Read a book whose title, subtitle, or series name contains the word "apprentice." OR Since folk artists are creative at turning every day materials into art, read a book whose title contains a word that can be made from "apprentice," like ape, ice or paper.

message 25: by Trish (last edited Aug 15, 2016 07:12AM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3682 comments So R2D2's operator, Kenny Baker, just passed away. Maybe a book where a robot is a major character? Or there's a robot on the cover?

Or back to the folk art thing (at least as I understand it, which may be completely wrong!), maybe read a book where a minority or indigenous people, or their values and culture, are important to the plot (e.g. Native American/Canadian, Amish/Mennonite, Australian Aboriginal?).

message 26: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 2469 comments Both 'FALL' and 'FOLK' are 4 letter words starting with F - read a book with a 4 letter F-word in the title

message 27: by S.L. (last edited Aug 15, 2016 07:01AM) (new)

S.L. Berry Oktoberfest is the world's largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair). Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. (copied from Wikipedia).

A book whose title or the author's last name can be found in OKTOBERFEST or is set in BAVARIA.

Pam (bluegrasspam) Perfect Diane! Exactly what I was thinking of! Thanks! I think I've seen a list for students entering college, also.
