Bkwmlee | 546 comments I read the latest offering of children’s manga series YO-KAI WATCH, Vol. 9 by Noriyuki Konishi with my nephew last night. Great series — one of our favorites! My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Bkwmlee | 546 comments Just finished Anthony Ray Hinton's memoir The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row. This was easily one of the best memoirs I've ever read -- powerful, uplifting, and an absolutely necessary read! Nothing less than 5 stars! Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments The Dark Between the Stars by Kevin Anderson.

670+ page space opera, book 1 of 3 in a series.

Overall, about 3.55 stars. Review at: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Bkwmlee | 546 comments Just finished The Italian Party by Christina Lynch. It was an ok read for me. 3 stars. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 258: by StarMan (new)

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments The Somnambulist, an odd Victorian-ish fantasy/crime/paranormal-ish tale populated by even odder characters. It's also a bit steampunk or horror, but not full-frontal either. As an author's first (and weird) tale, it was interesting.

The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes

Excellent review, Pien! I've heard many good things about this one and it seems to be highly rated amongst most of my GR friends too! Glad I was able to find a copy at a library sale a few weeks back, though doesn't look like I'll be able to get to it soon...but good to know it's one to look forward to when I do eventually get to it! :-)

Pien | 609 comments Thanks, bkmwlee! How great you found the book at the library sale, I’d like to have it myself! (This was a library book)
Enjoy, I look forward hearing what you thought of it, somewhere in the future ;-)

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments Thank you, Pien and Bkwmlee, for the recent good book reviews. I enjoy 'em, even if it's for a non-Starman genre (romance, cooking, gardening, erotica, or erotic garden romances between two chefs).

Happy Summer Reading to y'all, and everyone feel free to share your reviews!

Bkwmlee | 546 comments Finished Michelle Gable's The Summer I Met Jack. This one didn't work for me at all (in fact, I think it was pretty obvious from my review that I didn't like this book much). I ended up giving it 2 stars. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Bkwmlee | 546 comments Finished Anne Tyler's latest novel Clock Dance, which publishes next month. Definitely enjoyed this one -- a story that was subtle, low-key, not much going on, yet still meaningful and interesting. Gave this one 4 stars. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Thanks StarMan! Yes, I can definitely see this one being made into a movie or a TV series. Judging from the feedback on the book so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one gets picked up by a studio soon!

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments Dead Time (The Murder Notebooks, #1) by Anne Cassidy DEAD TIME by Anne Cassidy

A pretty good murder mystery set in London. Book 1 in a series. Probably best enjoyed by the younger end of the YA spectrum (maybe age 17 and under). I gave it 3.4 YA stars, or 2.8 Adult stars.

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments If you avoid Science Fiction or Dystopias/Post-Apocs due to lack of people of color, or not enough LGBTQetc. characters, here's a YA SF short story collection that aims to balance the scales a bit:

Bkwmlee | 546 comments Finished Cherise Wolas' sophomore effort The Family Tabor, which was a follow-up of sorts to her amazing debut novel The Resurrection of Joan Ashby from last year. StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments The Passage (The Passage, #1) by Justin Cronin
The Passage by Justin Cronin
(Book #1 of 3, to date, in a series)

It's a near-doorstopper (784 pages, paperback) apocalyptic/post-apoc tale.

No actual spoilers here, I'm just hiding the blurb for compactness:

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments Light (Empty Space Trilogy #1) by M. John Harrison

A speculative/SF/fantasy book that was more imaginative/weirder than mainstream SF. I can't recommend it to casual SF readers, but check it out if you like your characters weird and your plots more convoluted than a bag of ferrets.

GR says ~3.6 stars.
StarMan says 3 stars. Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Candace (candywilliams) | 491 comments News of the World This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Based on true events, it's about a Texan returning a 10-yr old girl to her relatives after she'd been held captive by the Kiowa for four years. Like other child captives, she was never the same, preferring her life among the Indians for the rest of her life. No one knows why, no matter how old they were when captured, or even if they'd been held captive for less than a year. Fascinating.

message 300: by StarMan (new)

StarMan (thestarman) | 1943 comments a cozy mystery (not my usual genre):

Class Reunions Are Murder by Taffy Canyon.

It was pretty good, as murder mysteries go. I liked that it was set in the mid-90s, and there were no quick Internet searches to solve the case, nor anyone saved by a mobile phone.

3 stars Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
