Hi Kay,

Just wanted to let you know that I finished Kokoro. Going in, I was prepared for a slow, meditative read. I started 8/1 to give myself plenty of time to savor it.

Meditative, yes. Slow, no. I finished the book in 24 hours!

I've gone with 3/5 stars for now, but I may up that. From a plot standpoint, the story itself is predictable. But from an ideas standpoint, I found many observations still relevant to today. It's a quiet, contemplative read. I recommend it overall :)

Okay, I have started both of my picks (Farmer Boy and Andrew's Brain). I like all of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books so that one will be fine. Not as sure on E.L. Doctorow - I've never read any of his stuff before. Mighty strange so far... I'll keep going but I'm not at all convinced I'll ever read anything of his again.

Sunshine✰✰✰ | 687 comments Finished my first book.

Fuzzy Navel (Jack Daniels Mystery, #5) by J.A. Konrath by J.A. Konrath 8/3/16 ★★★★★

Loved it, loved it, loved it. All I can say is Oh. My. God. Did Konrath really just end the book like that?! Yes. Yes he did. I reread the last 3 chapters three times and then gawked in disbelief. Good thing I already have the next one cause I can't stand the suspense! Who died?! Who DIED?! It's not a spoiler, cause I don't know either!

Michelle's Empty Nest (mlundy5) | 704 comments I read First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones. It was a great debut novel. I really enjoyed it and will continue on with the series! I gave it 4*.

Finished Andrew's Brain by E.L. Doctorow Andrew's Brain today. The jury's out on this one - a mighty odd plot essentially rambling along with the musings and self-related tale of the protagonist. I did enjoy the imagery used, however. I give this one three stars for the beautiful descriptions. But not my kind of story overall.

I read the first few books in that series several years ago and loved them. I really need to get caught back up!

Karen D | 111 comments Finished my second! - A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale
Liked that so much more than the first book this month, ended up being much better than I expected!

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1919 comments I finished both of my books and really enjoyed them both.

Taste of Torment (Deep In Your Veins, #3) by Suzanne Wright 8/18 ★★★★

It Happened One Autumn (Wallflowers, #2) by Lisa Kleypas 8/12 ★★★★★

Both books were in a series that I look forward to continue reading. Thanks for the picks Zoe!

Elizabeth | 489 comments ~Michelle~ since this month has been so busy I'm almost finish with The Deadly Real Estate Affair by K.M. Morgan and of course loving it

I finished Blow Down ★★★★★ Mystery, humor and romance -- a gret addition to this series. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Once More, With Feeling ★★★ I enjoyed many parts of this story, but the central conflict made no sense to me and the book suffered as a result.

Thanks for these picks!

message 167: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 1300 comments I managed to finish one of the picks this month! I'm improving!

Swamp by Karen Yochim
I read Swamp by Karen Yochim, which takes place in the bayous of Louisiana, in 1868. The plot includes a missing fiance, a unidentifiable corpse, tons of family secrets and a very likeable heroine, plus some Cajun folklore and history all wrapped up in one small volume. I thought the plot was going to be a little darker than it was, but it was a fun read nonetheless. I gave it four stars. I'd never heard of this author before I found the book in the library. I'm definitely interested in reading more from her.

[bookcover:Midnight Awakening|1388813] read 8/16. It had been on my to-read list for a few months. Why did I take so long to get to it? I gotta stay up on this series now. I did read Midnight Rising (Midnight Breed, #4) by Lara Adrian right after it. Slowly getting there.

Hoping to get to Vengeance in Death (In Death, #6) by J.D. Robb soon though.

message 169: by Sunshine✰✰✰ (last edited Aug 23, 2016 06:19AM) (new)

Sunshine✰✰✰ | 687 comments So this month, Marty picked Fuzzy Navel (Jack Daniels Mystery, #5) by J.A. Konrath & Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, #4) by Jeaniene Frost , which happened to be the same books Krissy picked for me in July and I never got to them. But this month, I finally read both!

Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost 8/23/16 ★★★★
My heart hurt reading this one and I couldn't put it down. As usual though, it was all better in the end....mostly. Love Cat & Bones and can't wait to read the next one.

Fuzzy Navel by J.A. Konrath 8/3/16 ★★★★★
Oh. My. God. Did Konrath really just end the book like that?! Yes. Yes he did. I reread the last 3 chapters three times and then gawked in disbelief. Good thing I already have the next one cause I can't stand the suspense! Who died?! Who DIED?! It's not a spoiler cause I don't know either!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1987 comments I finished A Change of Fortune (Ladies of Distinction, #1) by Jen Turano as well and regretted I didn't read it earlier. It was an easy, entertaining, light, fun and absolutely great reading time. Regarding the fact I'm no more into historical fictional it's a huge praise. I started it to just get rid of it and within the fist chapter was hooked and now I'm really looking forward to the next one in series I want to read next month :-)

Jenn (tellingmelies) | 540 comments Finished Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt today. Talk about tears! If you haven't read this, I recommend it!

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 417 comments Fight with Me (With Me in Seattle, #2) by Kristen Proby - attempted to listen to but it was the same basic story of the first one so it was pointless, same story different characters.

message 173: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1600 comments I managed to finish Cross (Alex Cross, #12) by James Patterson , I can't believe I haven't got this sooner.

Michelle's Empty Nest (mlundy5) | 704 comments I finished Dare Me by Megan Abbott Dare Me by Megan Abbott today.

I never could really get into the book and it just didn't seem like a good fit for me. I gave in 2*.

Kay (Brigidsmomma) Compton (brigidsmomma) | 565 comments I actually never even got to either of my DB challenge books this month, so it looks like I will be adding them to my September reading list...

message 176: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (tellingmelies) | 540 comments It may have been on the last day of the month, but I finished Legend (Legend, #1) by Marie Lu . Wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be but hopefully it picks up in the next books
