I can't do audiobooks in bed - it's such a pain to try to find where you left off. I usually read them when I'm walking or on the subway.
Beste wrote: "Shall we create a game thread to write an epic fantasy?"That'll be fun. But November is crazy busy for almost all here.
A few of the publishers do have Goodreads accounts, but I've seldom seen them add friends. I'd give it a 40% chance of being legit lol.
Margret wrote: "I’m so pissed Tor hasn’t friended me yet!! I love Tor!"I honestly thought it wasn't legit, but then I've been looking through their page and it seems like it's actually for real. I don't know what prompted them sending me a request, but hey, not complaining haha.
Niki Hawkes wrote: "Maybe it was your recent reviews for Stormlight. :)"That's true =].
I've been debating about starting an actual blog, just for kicks. I love reviewing books and I've been doing it just as a hobby on Goodreads for a few years (though I've been doing it consistently only since the beginning of this year). It might be nice just to have everything nicely formatted and put together on my own blog, and then maybe Netgalley publishers would pay attention to me haha. I love the idea of helping new authors (the ones who actually write good books) get some traction.
And also the whole "free books" thing is nice haha.
That would be really cool! I love your reviews. I support the blog idea. You're already putting in 75% of the effort by writing the reviews. It time you get some perks. ;) Let me know if I can help.

That's great Liam I've read your reviews and you should definitely do a blog I thought of doing stuff like that back in September but with only my maintenance loan and job hunting not going well along with my use of the money so far (books, camera, software, transport) I'm pretty much delaying it until I get a job or some money so that's my problem but I doubt you'll have that
You should watch some videos on how to get a blog mainly you need to get a name for your website from a hosting place and I think some of them go monthly or so and then you can create it on websites like wix or wordpress...Yeah I did a bit of research
But anyway hope you do start one it would be really cool

I have a free WordPress account and a page set up with them, but I've never used it. I'd probably just start with the free one that I can get used to, and then eventually move up the ladder if it's something I think I want to do.
What kind of job field are you looking at Ahdam?

However if talking about future prospects I'm interested in the media sector preferably film obviously I'm not gonna go in as a writer/director/producer or anything but I've been thinking about that stuff and have been trying to put myself out there in fact early this year I was working in a production company where we helped produce a star wars fan film for school kids and I worked as sound editing (got to add lightsaber sounds so happy with that) and I know how to edit videos and if I practice I could use photoshop and basic VFX as well and if you scroll up here I'm attempting to be an amateur photographer which is alright if I could learn to just go out there and do it. Also I am currently working on a script that HOPEFULLY I am able to make it into a short film with some people eventually (I guess reading books may come into play here)
So that's my life story but yeah right now part time work anywhere and hopefully do something productive with my life in the next couple of months

As long as you're willing to put in the work, I'm sure you'll do great.

I did the same thing Liam. I finally started my blog this past year and I've gotten a lot more books from Netgalley than I thought I would get. It's worth it.

I've pondered a blog myself, though books wouldn't be the main thing. I'm terrible at writing reviews, though I do intend to be better about that in the future.
TOR friended me about a year ago and it's legit. I've had correspondences with them about a few things and a poser account wouldn't have known the information easily.
Liam wrote: "I got a friend request today from "Tor.com Publisher".
Can that even possibly be legit haha?"

From what I hear, Netgalley and some of the others care a lot about having your own blog site setup... just having a popular Goodreads profile isn't enough... this is all secondhand knowledge... gotta put in the work to get dem free books, I guess...

Hahahahaha that's hilarious.
Do you guys recommend starting with a simple platform like WordPress and working up from there? I need something that's just easy to format and not complicated for starters haha.
Unless you want to spend money to self-host (I've never had the incline to do that but it really works for some) I recommend a platform. I personally prefer Wordpress from and aesthetic standpoint, but it has a slightly steeper learning curve. In all other aspects, I still prefer WP.
Thanks Niki =]. I'm going to try and get creative with a domain name. I think I could get used to it pretty quickly, and I can handle a learning curve. Hopefully within the next few months I'll be able to get it up and running, and try transfer all my reviews over to some kind of archive as well.
I'm excited to see what you come up with. I'd love if you'd send me a link when you get it going. :)
Niki Hawkes wrote: "I'm excited to see what you come up with. I'd love if you'd send me a link when you get it going. :)"Yes I definitely will! It might take me awhile, but I will ;].
I was actually checking out your blog yesterday and today, and I love how you have everything laid out and categorized. I want to do mainly book reviews, but might possibly make a different section for posts about other things, too (though this would be less common).
Liam wrote: "Do you guys recommend starting with a simple platform like WordPress and working up from there? I need something that's just easy to format and not complicated for starters haha."Mine is just with blogspot. I don't think you need anything more than that or wordpress.
Oh cool! Thank you. :) I started out strictly as a book reviewing site, but after 2 or 3 years decided to stop posting the way I thought I should and start having more fun with it. Books are still the #1 passion though, so that's still primarily what I do.
As a side note, it took me at least 3 years to get my blog the way I like it. I tested out several different themes and tried all sorts of different things. But now I love it, so I guess it was worth the effort lol.

It'll probably take me about two more weeks to get everything laid out the way I want it for right now,
and to transfer all of my reviews (even though I'm keeping it super simple). I just don't have much time haha.
This is what I've got so far =]. I put in a few hours worth of time to transfer all of my reviews over, set up the home page, and figured out the overall formatting of the blog itself. There's still a bunch more things I want to do (there's nothing under the "Start Here" or the "About" tabs as of right now), but I actually feel like I made some good progress haha, and I'm happy with how it's coming along. It wasn't as difficult as I was expecting it to be. It's a super simple layout at this point, nothing fancy, but still.https://thoughtsofathousandlives.word...
Any thoughts/input/advice from anybody is greatly appreciated ^_^.

Go Liam go!!! I love your intro! Can’t wait to see where this goes for you, cause you started out strong
Make sure you also put a post in the self promo thread under the “your blog/vlog here”, so we can have you listed there!
I’ve recently started a sewing blog.. not ready to share yet lol... maybe we should start a support group thread ;)

Thanks so much Margret =]. I'll be happy if I can up my approval rate on Netgalley a bit haha. Beyond that it's just fun =].
That looks great Liam! Best of luck with it :)I wish I could write a decent review, my memory is dreadful, so I just end up writing incoherent thoughts about how much I liked something haha.

Sometimes those can be the best kind haha =]. Thanks ^_^.
Great blog Liam I'm trying to get the hang of looking at peoples blogs but I'll try to look at yours and everyone else's I think this conversation has definitely pushed me to start a blog since I want to do one on books, film and other stuff in my life like photography so I should thank you guys for that....when I do it
For curiosity Liam can I ask where you got your domain name since there are different websites like bluehost and tsohost that does that stuff
The lighthouse motif is a thing that can be extrapolated to make a site-wide theme, I think...i hope you do. Would be cool. Also bold choice with the controversial opinion in your opener...that second sentence will deffo make a few eyes bubble. Heh!
All the best, Degnan. And my best to Mom in Waiting :-) feel sure I've said this at least once before.
Dunno if you saw it tho' so...

It'd be cool if you have a variety of stuff up there =]. I got the domain just through Wordpress and set it up through them - which is what I think you were asking? The name itself I came up with on my own - if that's actually what you wanted haha.
