I read it as a teen around 1970 and it was in the young adult section, though I think this author also wrote sci fi for adults. Her or his last name started with A. In this book which took place on a different planet, the hero is a young boy or man who turns into a wolf or dog (not a werewolf!) and must learn to run four legged.

Could it be Moon of Three Rings by Andre Norton? The hero is a young man that travels on a trade ship to another planet with a medieval population. There he is transformed into a dog by magic, to save him from some men that are chasing him.

The edition I have is the 2008 omnibus Moonsinger, that contains the first two parts of the series.
