Looks like Updraft by Fran Wilde is the June pick.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Ooh this is exciting. I think my friend (who is the editor for the ADSoM books by V.E. Schwab) is also Fran's editor. If not, then they definitely talk a good bit (because Fran knitted her some wristwarmers).

Rick hrm. 11 holds for 3 ebooks. Might need to buy this one... Was on the radar in any event, so this might tip me over the edge.

Meanwhile my library has 5/6 physical copies available..

message 5: by Rick (new)

Rick Ha. Mine has 9 holds on its 5 physical copies... :/

terpkristin | 4407 comments I think I'm going to try the audiobook. I was holding off on using my other credit this month to see what the pick was, seems worth a try.

Oh yea, this one really is a fantasy
:-> Hope it's a good story

Elizabeth (elizabeth_shack) This was a fun book! I have a signed copy on my shelf for one of my nephews' birthday.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments yikes, the kindle is more expensive than the paperback, and the paperback itself is a few dollars above what I'd want to pay, and it's not available in my library system. I may need to finally find the county library......

Iain Bertram (iain_bertram) | 1740 comments Boo Hiss, no mass market paperback yet :-(

Yeah, I actually yelled (well not yelled, but spoke out loud) at my screen "For crying out loud, read an old book" when I saw that it was another recent release. Haven't been able to afford any of the picks since Sword of Shannara.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments That I don't mind so much. We've had a number of classics recently, and this being in print in hard copy and e copy and audiobook makes it super available. If I weren't between end of semester and summer school paycheck so probably wouldn't have noticed the price issues.

Greg | 83 comments Loved this book, can't wait to discuss it with the Sword and Laser group as we get into June.

message 14: by Rick (new)

Rick Actually, the price doesn't bother me much. I figure, when I join a book club, that I'll end up buying about half the selections, maybe more. That averages out to $6-7 per month and I can't really find it in me to complain. If a given book doesn't interest me that much or cash is tight that month I'll hit up the library. If it's not there, oh well, I'll skip it.

message 15: by Alan (new)

Alan | 534 comments I put a hold on a library copy yesterday and beat the S&L rush, yay. It looks like a fun read and the first I've read of her work.

The setting described in the blurb reminded me a bit of The Aeronaut's Windlass, which was one of my favorites of this past year. Anyone read both and, if so, are the settings similar?

message 16: by [deleted user] (last edited May 25, 2016 03:12PM) (new)

I've been wanting to read this for a while, so I guess I'll use this as an excuse to finally get the ebook (none of my local libraries even own this book).

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments 9 copies in the LA County library system. Only one of them checked out.

Update: two of them checked out after I picked one up during my lunch break:)

Colin Forbes (colinforbes) | 534 comments I keep saying that I'm going to skip a month and catch up on other reading, but I've got a spare Audible credit and I'd miss the discussion, so lets give it a go!

Shaunesay | 13 comments I've got one waiting for me at the library, 5 of 6 copies were available, no ebook option though.

LittleBookDruid | 2 comments It's been a while since I read a sci-fi. And my first book with this club, man I am excited. :D

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1803 comments Sweet pick! I like the Kindle sample I've read so far.

Rochelle | 69 comments I almost read this last fall, but got caught up in other books. Excited to get to it now!

Joanna Chaplin | 1175 comments I've been trying to read up the backlog and borrow instead of buy, lately. I have instituted a special policy for club picks, though. If I can't borrow it by the 10th of the month, I'm buying the ebook. But I was just gifted some Amazon credit, so I've decided to just buy it now.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Fancied reading a physical book so got this ordered and its arriving today. Really excited to get started on this one.

message 25: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara | 24 comments I picked it up from the library yesterday. I've heard great things about it and am looking forward to reading it.

Colin Forbes (colinforbes) | 534 comments Had some doubts at the outset as to whether this would really be my thing but, at half way through, I'm quite enjoying it.

terpkristin | 4407 comments This tweet from Fran Wilde, a response to something I'd written to her, pretty much made my day: "Honorary tower resident, proposed member of Skymouth Protection Society..."

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I saw that, and it made me smile too, which I really needed, so thanks. :)

Richard | 99 comments Finished Updraft earlier this week. If it hadn't explicitly said it was the first book in a series, I would've assumed it's a standalone book. And even though I'll probably read the sequel, I don't need there to be one. It's fun to speculate about the mysteries of this world, but nothing here demanded a follow-up story for me.

Trike | 11197 comments Just started this. Not bad so far.

A couple things I'm puzzled by: is it hard to breathe and is it cold? Sometimes it seems like it is, sometimes not. (view spoiler)

I agree, that was a point that was mentioned but not consistently supported.

I think that has more to do with her in particular. (view spoiler)
