Mary Beth | 82 comments Hi!! This group seems like a lot of fun and am excited because I love Gothic suspense. I should be getting my book Tuesday for the group read. It has already been shipped. I've been reading Gothic suspense for years now and have only read one by Mary Stewart and that was awhile back ago, so I am ready for this.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hi I know a few of you from other groups!

I just managed to get hold of Madam, Will You Talk for 20 cents from a local charity shop & knew I just had to join here!

It features some of the retro artwork that Tadiana has mentioned before

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Hi Carol! Good to see you here. I'm waiting for the next available chance to reread MWYT. (hint, hint) There are several people who also want to read Nine Coaches Waiting soon (personally I'll probably pass on that one because I read it for the umpteenth time not too long ago).

We have a Buddy Reads thread where we discuss the upcoming group reads.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Thanks for your welcome. This one isn't too bad - some of the others have been shockers.

Now if I wanted to get some cover envy going I'd show you the 1938 Ngaio Marsh I got (published in 1938)- also 20 cents! Not in good condition sadly or it would be worth something.

I forgot to mention my Marty Stewart history. I'm sure I read some in my tweens, but don't remember them well. With my rereads (or new reads) my favourite so far is This Rough Magic. I really was on the edge of my seat while I read it!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Missed your post Tadiana!

Definitely up for a buddy/group read of MWYT. Like you I'll pass on Nine Coaches Waiting. I read last year & its on my now dead Kobo.

I'll browse the threads properly soon. :)

Tweety (tweetyperkins) | 65 comments This Rough Magic is a good one, my favorite is Wildfire at Midnight. :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Tweety wrote: "This Rough Magic is a good one, my favorite is Wildfire at Midnight. :)"

That one does sound like me. The other title I can get hold of is the Gabriel Hounds.

But every year Zonta has a big book fair in our town. I went last year & there were heaps of MS titles. I just selected This Rough Magic as I thought I may not still like her. I just have to hope supporters of the fair regift books!

message 412: by Tweety (new)

Tweety (tweetyperkins) | 65 comments Oo, I hope you find some more of her's! I don't claim to love every single one, but some of her books are just fantastic. I really need to reread some and Read the one's I haven't read, like Gabriel Hounds.

message 413: by Judith (new)

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments Love MWYT and TRM. I'm trying to find all her books in hardbacks...it's hard to find some of the oldest ones.

Welcome Carol!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments Loved the Gabriel Hounds. Such a different setting. I was fascinated.

message 416: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Alhinc I first read The Hollow Hills when I was a teenager (a long time ago) and later bought the Merlin Trilogy, then gradually bought all the other MS's novels. So I've read them all. My favorites are : the first two of Merlin Trilogy because I find the third + The Wicked Day too sad. My father also loved the Trilogy which shows the novels aren't only for female readers. I love all the other novels but especially The Ivy Tree maybe because I'm a rider and horse lover. It made me want to visit Hadrian's Wall area as I'm interested in post Roman Britain, and I did travel there. I even found a Mithras shrine/altar and felt closer to Merlin. For me, Hadrian's Wall is a kind of link between Merlin's books and the Ivy Tree. I read all MS' s books again every year, except The Last Enchantment and The Wicked Day. My daughter became a fan too as soon as she could read them.

The Merlin Trilogy are the only ones I haven't re-read. I need to find copies and see what I think of them now!

message 418: by HJ (new)

HJ | 300 comments I'm beginning to wonder if I shall ever read the Merlin trilogy. I just don't enjoy fantasy so even though I adore her romantic suspense novels I don't want to try the Merlin / Arthur books and be disappointed.

Do they read as fantasy, or as history? Are there paranormal or unworldly elements? Any magic?

message 419: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Alhinc They read as history rather than fantasy. Believe me I hate fantasy as much as you do. However, Merlin's powers are totally unlike a magician's. They are both more intellectual and scientific. It's rather about knowing as opposed to those who don't. It's also about being powerless because you have to wait for a god's will. The first two books of the trilogy in my opinion are the best.

Thank you. This is really useful and I really will try to read at least part of this trilogy now!

Just managed to get The Gabriel Hounds for 20 cents at the op shop I volunteer for. Hopefully that will be a group read soon! :)

Short for opportunity shop run by a charity. I'm enjoying the volunteering but the concrete floors mean I only do it once a week. They get a lot of deceased estates so its a good source for the books I love. I got an Anya Seton as well!

message 427: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Hi. After reading through many of your comments, I think I am still new to Mary's novels. I've read, Airs Above The Ground, and I loved it! I've read, Nine Coaches Waiting, and I loved it. I've read, The Crystal Cave and My Brother Michael. Of those four books, Airs Above the Ground and Nine Coaches Waiting are my favorites.

(Nine Coaches Waiting is the other.) I also highly recommend This Rough Magic, but that one isn't as universally loved. :)

Lol--long story! It started with Google's Earth Day game yesterday, telling you what animal you are most like. Several GR friends played and were told they were mantis shrimp. See Jessica's thread. Then someone pointed us to this hilarious page about mantis shrimp at Oatmeal.com. Several people were inspired to add new GR nicknames from this page.

I was not a mantis shrimp, however; I am a woolly mammoth, and after I threatened the shrimp with stomping they appointed me queen. Which I changed to dictator. :D This funny status thread from yesterday shows how it all evolved: https://www.goodreads.com/user_status...

I don't know how long I'll keep the moniker, but we had fun.

Judy Morrison | 1 comments I read the cottage books first--Thornyhold, The Stormy Petrel and Rose Cottage. My favorite of her romantic suspense is (so far) My Brother Michael. I loved the sixties vibe of that book. I am now reading Madam Will You Talk. Her descriptions of those places make me want to visit them.

Elizabeth | 3 comments Hi,

My name is Elizabeth, and I just joined this lovely group as I'm doing a re-read of Mary Stewart's romantic suspense novels - I have been reading them since I was 12 or so, introduced by my English language teacher (I am Greek) who gave me The Moonspinners as a gift. I have read all of the romantic suspense novels and almost all the Arthurian ones, and I go back to them at regular intervals.

Thanks for reading this!

message 450: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1 comments I have read all of of Mary Stewart's novels. She the one who hooked me on reading. I was a very poor reader until HS when I needed a book report on fiction. I went to the library and a nun asked me if she could help. I said I did not know what I wanted. She gave me Madam, Will you talk and said i think you will like this! I read all of hers and everyone of the great writers of my youth - Phyllis Whitney, Helen McInnes etc. I am adding them all to my Nook as my books are falling apart.
Is there any one now writing in her style? I am not interested in the millions of bodice rippers out there, LOL I want a GOOD mystery with adventure and romance.
