I haven't found anyone who's still alive who can write like Stewart!

Madam, Will You Talk is one of my favorites!

Some of Susanna Kearsley's novels remind me of MS, like The Rose Garden, The Shadowy Horses and The Firebird. Her books tend to have a bit of a paranormal element to them, at least most of the ones I've read so far, which may or may not appeal to you.

Also, though she's passed away, I just finished the last of the six M.M. Kaye murder mysteries, Death in Kashmir: A Mystery. I think this one was my favorite, and it was very much like a MS novel.

CLM | 11 comments There are a few out of print authors worth checking for at the library or online whose work is reminiscent of Stewart: Mary Elgin; Anne Stevenson (A Game of Statues, A Relative Stranger), some of Joan Aiken and Jane Aiken Hodge's contemporary novels (One Way To Venice), although I prefer their historicals.

Christine Hello, I'm new to the group! I just finished reading The Crystal Cave, and Kathy kindly directed me to your current discussion thread about this book. This is the first Mary Stewart I have read. I enjoyed it very much, and I look forward to reading more of books!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments Welcome Christine! I am currently reading Nine Coaches Waiting and loving it.

message 457: by Christine (new)

Christine Thanks for the welcome! I'm glad I found this group. Before now, I wasn't even aware of Mary Stewart's other novels beyond her Arthurian series. I will have to try to read some of her others as well!

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments Hey, if you wanna buddy read any let me know. I'm behind most others in this group. We could do some catching up together. :)

Ann-Marie | 34 comments Hi everyone! I’m new here and just wanted to say hello. Like all of you I love the way Mary Stewart wrote - the characters, the scenery, the atmosphere, the suspense (and romance!). She was one very talented author. My most favorite book by her is “This Rough Magic”. That’s the one I go back and reread every now and then. It’s a comfort read.

Shout out to Tadiana ✩ Night Owl☽ for the awesome review she did on “Airs Above The Ground”. Through her link, I find myself here. Thank you for telling me about this group. :)

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments Welcome! This is a great group. Glad to have you join in.

Bobbie | 181 comments Hi, I just discovered this group. I have been a Mary Stewart fan for a very long time and now my daughter has read several of her books, as well. My favorite of her's is Nine Coaches Waiting, which I really want to re-read soon.

I have read most of her books except the Arthurian series and a couple that I have not been able to find, The Wind Off the Small Isles and another written for children. I really must get to the Arthurian series but have read a lot of King Arthur books so just have not gotten to them, yet.

One question, which book is the one where the main character goes to a convent to investigate something? I can't remember that one very well and want to read it again.
I'm so glad I found this group.

message 468: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Zapata Hi Bobbie! Welcome!!

What an adorable avatar picture! Are you a quilter, by any chance? (My mom still has a quilt she made years and years ago with the Sunbonnet Sue pattern. I loved being able to use it when I was little!)

Sorry, I don't know right off which book you are thinking of, but I'm sure someone will chime in soon with the right title. =))

message 469: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie | 181 comments Thanks for the response and welcome. Yes, I am a quilter and besides reading and my grandchildren, that is where most of my time goes.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments Hi Bobbie! Welcome to our group. The story with the convent is Thunder on the Right. Also, I have a PDF copy of Wind Off the Small Isles; I'll email it to you if you want to PM me your email address. It's just a photocopy of the magazine where the story was originally published, and it's in 3 separate files, but it's still fun to read. :)

Katy (kathy_h) | 120 comments Hi Bobbie -- welcome to the group.

message 478: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie | 181 comments Thanks Kathy, everyone is so friendly. I did see something about a group read in Nov, how will I know about that, which book, etc? I really want to re-read some of the MS books. I also saw something about a Daphne Du Maurier group so I am going to look for that, she is another of my favorites.

I just returned from a trip to the UK and went to Cornwall, it was wonderful to actually see it after reading so many books set there.

message 479: by Lori (new)

Lori Mulligan Davis | 23 comments I wrote to Mary Stewart in 1977 while I was in England for the first time. I told her how much I loved seeing her books come to life around me--seeing a wall with glass cemented atop recalled, "as informative, and as welcoming, as a blank wall with broken glass on the top" (This Rough Magic). And hearing the pips on a public phone call warning me my time was up brought back, "'There are the pips,' said Mother distractedly. 'It can't have been three minutes and they know how it puts me off.'" (Mrs. Brooke in Wildfire at Midnight). Seeing a huge, ivy-covered tree (The Ivy Tree). Those are the few I remember telling her. All commonplace details to her, but delightfully new to me.

message 480: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie | 181 comments I was that way about Scotland, also, when I first visited there and now to visit England and especially Cornwall was wonderful.

message 481: by Lori (new)

Lori Mulligan Davis | 23 comments Yes! Near Endinburgh there are so many places named for people associated with the Merlin books that I constantly thought of MS. Actually, we went to Scotland so I could go to 79 Morningside Drive, simply to stand in front of her home. I would never have dared to knock. My long-suffering husband was singing, "On the Street Where You Live."

message 482: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie | 181 comments Oh, I didn't know she lived in Scotland. I also enjoy Rosamunde Pilcher who is from Cornwall and now lives in Scotland and then there was Daphne Du Maurier. My daughter-in-law is from Scotland so we have a strong connection there.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments If you're new to this group, I suggest you add a comment to our Buddy Reads thread, or click to be notified of comments to that thread. One of these times we're due for another buddy read, and I'm open to suggestions. :) Take a look at the threads to see which MS books haven't been discussed for a year or so. Maybe The Moonspinners or The Gabriel Hounds?

Here's the buddy reads thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Sara (phantomswife) | 104 comments HI everyone. I found this group thru Debbie (Crazy Cat). LOVE Mary Stewart and read all her mystery/romance books when I was a teenager. Fell completely in love with the Merlin series as it was released and still list it as among the greatest novels ever written. I can remember being enthralled by Nine Coaches and I'm hoping to have some of the same reaction on reading it again. So nice to find a group of fellow Stewart admirers.

Welcome Sara! It's always fun to meet another Mary Stewart admirer. :) I just saw your PM to me and I'll send you the "Wind off the Small Isles" PDF files today. This will be a fun buddy read. Nine Coaches Waiting is my favorite of her novels, but I've enjoyed almost everything Stewart wrote.

By the way, all credit goes to Diane Lynn, who was the one who actually bought the 1968 Good Housekeeping magazine on eBay, scanned the pages containing this novella, and shared them with others in our group. Diane hasn't been active in this group lately (most of the original members here went inactive once they finished the group reads of MS's romantic suspense novels; we're on our second round now), but I was chatting with her on her WotSI thread last week and she says she'll probably join our buddy read of WotSI next month. If she does be sure to thank her!

Sara (phantomswife) | 104 comments such a nice thing to do! I checked for a copy of it online and it can be had new for a mere $168 at Amazon...they will pay shipping.

message 495: by Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽, Moderator (last edited Jan 16, 2016 10:22AM) (new)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 1090 comments AbeBooks has WotSI for a mere 18 pounds, plus shipping (from Great Britain). I figure it works out to around $40 US. Every once in a while someone around here is lucky enough to find this in a used bookstore for a reasonable price, but I'm not counting on ever seeing an actual copy of it.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments I will be sure to thank her. How nice of amazon to pay the shipping. Lol

Sewingdervish | 18 comments Hello,
I read the Aruthurian trilogy in high school. I think that I picked up one of Mrs Stewart's suspense novels but I was looking for more like Arthur and I don't think that I got very far. Just a few years ago a friend recommended that I read Nine Coaches Waiting because I love Jane Eyre so much. I was hooked, I read everything I could get my hands on that summer including an ILL of Wind Off the Small Isles. I am a super fan now! In 2015 I read all of her books again in order of publication (more or less). That was a fun experiment. I finished off The Little Broomstick just before Christmas ad I was enchanted by it. I love them all but my favorite is My Brother Michael, something about the mythology really touches me. I am dying for some conversation about my favorite author's books. This is my first attempt at a good reads group so I might need someone to show me the ropes.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 439 comments Hi Sewingdervish. I am reading The Crystal Cave right now. I also loved Nine Coaches Waiting. I have not read all of her books but hope to. Did you see we are doing Wind off the Small Isles in Feb. as a buddy read? I have never read that one and am really looking forward to it. Join us for the conversation if you can. :-)
