Diane Lynn | 481 comments Glad you found the group Ginny. I know how happy you must be. I see Misfit and Jeannette have already recommended Susanna Kearsley. I would agree as I recently read The Winter Sea. Kearsley wrote wonderful descriptions of the Scottish coast and I would suggest that book if you haven't already discovered it.

Ginny (goodreadscomginny_kubitz_moyer) | 6 comments Thanks for the welcome! I have read a few Kearsley titles -- loved The Winter Sea and The Rose Garden in particular. (Not so into The Shadowy Horses for some reason.) Has anyone read The Firebird, her latest? Is it good?

Misfit wrote: "Hi Ginny, glad you found us. I like Holt, but in small doses. MS is tops in her genre. Have you tried Susanna Kearsley?"

lol *like minds* I should turn the page before posting.

I have The Firebird in the queue, and want to read it, even though it has gotten mixed reviews from my GR friends, ranging from 3 to 5 stars.

message 155: by Susan (new)

Susan Hi everyone! I just joined! After reading Jeannette's posts I want to read Mary Stewart too! I've been looking over her books and they sound like something I could really sink my teeth into!

Soooooo where do I start?? Lol

Oh my name is Susan, newly moved to Arizona, the valley of the sun and super HOT temps! I have three kids, 26, 11, and 7 ! The two little ones go back to school on July 22 and I'm looking forward to getting back into reading again! My husband Brian just had carotid artery surgery and that took up much of my reading time as well! I WANT MY BOOKS SO BAD!!!! Lol

message 156: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Susan!! Glad you followed me over here. We have just started a group read of The Moonspinners. It's just getting started, so grab a copy and join us.

(I'm guessing your husband is recovering well?) :)

message 157: by Misfit, Moderator (new)

Misfit | 587 comments Hi Susan, moonspinners is a good one to start with. I've been to AZ in the summer. *shudders*

message 158: by Susan (last edited Jul 14, 2013 01:22PM) (new)

Susan I will check my books and see if I have Moonspinner! It sounds really good! If not I'll pick it up at my crackhouse(library)! My husband had surgery on June 20th and went back to work on that Tuesday after! He is doing great and still gets tired when he over does it, he's 53 and I keep telling him to take it easy especially in this heat!

I'm joining the Moonspinners read........it is a stand alone right?

message 159: by Misfit, Moderator (new)

Misfit | 587 comments Moonspinners is a stand alone. Some of the group is going to watch the Disney movie afterwards and discuss.

message 160: by Susan (new)

Susan Movie? Lol I've got a lot to learn!!

Misfit | 587 comments Susan wrote: "Movie? Lol I've got a lot to learn!!"

Don't get too excited, it's nothing like the book.

It's a Disney version, with Hayley Mills, that borrows the title, but not much else. It's the only MS novel that was filmed. Many of the group think Hitchcock should have adapted her books. They would have made great movies!

message 163: by Phair (new)

Phair (sphair) Hi- I'm Sandy but go by Phair on GR. I was reading Mary Stewart back in the mid 60's. At that time I was also reading Holt, Dorothy Eden, Phyllis Whitney, Anne Maybury, Barbara Michaels & Nora Lofts.
Have not reread much of her work since then although I did read one I had recalled as a favorite, My Brother Michael, for a f2f discussion group a few years ago.
I still have a number of PB copies of Mary Stewart titles including a 1962 copy of Moonspinners. I'm going to try to read along for the discussion here if I can squeeze it in. I am a library director (have been for the past 42 years!) and this is a busy time for me with the end of the old/start of a new fiscal year and attendant reports plus the usual Summer rush.
I'd also love to join in on the movie discussion. I saw it first when it was released (big deal- Hayley's first "grown up" screen kiss!) but as others have said- very Disneyfied and bearing little resemblance to the book. I do have a copy of the DVD in my personal collection since I have always been a big Hayley fan.

message 164: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Sandy! Welcome to the group! My Brother Michael was the first Stewart novel I read, and this was just last year. (It's my favorite so far.) I just missed reading them in the 60s; I guess I was a couple years too young, and I don't think my mother read them, either.

Tentative plan is to watch the movie at the end of the week, or whenever we get enough people finished with the read. Join in on The Moonspinners discussion whenever you get the time, even if it's a few weeks (or more) from now. The threads stay open. ANd, we have a read planned for August and September, too.

Do try Norah Lofts ( see her Fans Of group here on Goodreads for an intro perhaps)

message 166: by Ginny (new)

Ginny (goodreadscomginny_kubitz_moyer) | 6 comments Thanks for the Norah Lofts tip. I remember seeing her books at the library -- I'll take another look.

Along the lines of Susannah Kearsley Gothic time-travel romance, has anyone read The Lute and the Glove by Katherine Eyre? I think it's from the 1950s. My grandma had it and I read it as a teenager and found it captivating (would I find it the same at age 40? I'll have to track it down and find out).

message 167: by [deleted user] (new)

The Lute and the Glove? It sounds interesting!

message 168: by Ginny (new)

Ginny (goodreadscomginny_kubitz_moyer) | 6 comments Jeannette, that's the one! It's the very same cover as the copy my grandma had.

Okay, now I totally want to re-read it. Hmmm. Who in the family has the book now???? Must ask around ....

Diane Lynn | 481 comments Jeannette wrote: "I just missed reading them in the 60s; I guess I was a couple years too young, and I don't think my mother read them, either."

I also missed reading MS in the 60's. I was busy reading the likes of John Buchan. Mary Stewart refers to his work in some of her books and again in that Off the Page interview. Her work is similar to his in that the action takes place outdoors, with a trek, journey, or chase involved. However, his work lacks the romance.

message 170: by Diane Lynn (new)

Diane Lynn | 481 comments Good luck with The Lute and the Glove, it's very expensive :(

I keep meaning to read The 39 Steps. I like the last film adaptation, even if the romance was not in the original story,

message 172: by Judith (new)

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments Hi, I've been a MS fan for years! My favorite two books of hers are Airs Above The Ground, and This Rough Magic. I named my daughter Vanessa after Vanessa March in ABTG.
It would be great day if PBS would make a series of one of her books. I've always thought Wildfire at Midnight would make a great Masterpiece Mystery series. Casting it would be great fun.
Judith

message 173: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, Judith! Welcome to the group. :) We have a group read planned for August 15 of Touch Not the Cat, and hope you will join in. Some of the group members have suggested casting for some of our group reads (Moonspinners, Madam Will You Talk?). I think we would all love to see Stewart's books turned into movies or a series.

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments Thanks Jeannette,(lovely name, almost like Gianetta Drury!) I would like to participate in the group read, It sounds like a lot of fun.
I am presently re reading Madam Will You Talk, but I'll pick up TNTC when we start.
Judith

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Judith! Somebody teased me about that one during the group read of WaM (Wildfire at Midnight). After you finish Madam, go over to this thread and leave a comment if you like:

Tentative start date for Cat is August 15.

Since I'm always looking for books like Mary Stewart's, I checked this out - £55 on Amazon! But she wrote several other books which are affordable, so I'm going to try Star in the Willows, which isn't on Goodreads. But check out Katherine Wigmore Eyre.

I followed a link in there and found this list, which may be of interest:

Diane Lynn | 481 comments Hj wrote: "£55 on Amazon!"

Crazy, isn't it!

I think I will be able to read
The Lute and the Glove while visiting one of my sons as his library has it. They also have a few others by Katherine Wigmore Eyre. I will be curious to see what you think of Star in the Willows.

That is an interesting list. Some authors I have never heard of and will check out, thank you for posting.

Misfit | 587 comments Hi Judith, glad to see you found us.

message 180: by Ginny (new)

Ginny (goodreadscomginny_kubitz_moyer) | 6 comments Can't believe The Lute and the Glove is so expensive! Sounds like it's up for a re-issue. I've never read any of Katherine Wigmore Eyre's other books; I should check them out.

I'm just discovering Madeleine Brent (who, as it turns out, was actually a guy!). So far, I'm impressed. Tregaron's Daughter was very good; Moonraker's Bride was also very suspenseful. (And my library seems to have a whole shelf full of titles, which is nice.) Not MS -- no one is -- but still worth a look.

message 181: by Judith (new)

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments Phyllis A. Whitney is another good suspense author. Hunter's Green and Seven Tears for Apollo (Greece, yea!) are my two favorite books of hers. She died in 2008 at 104 and wrote until she was 97. She reminds me a lot of Lady Mary because her settings are so vivid and the POV is usually first person too. Like MS she did extensive research before writing her books, visiting the locations with her husband and taking extensive notes.
Here is the official website with her list of books if anyone is interested.

Thanks, Judith! She has an author's page on goodreads, too.

Hunter's Green is still available in print on amazon.

message 183: by Minz (new)

Minz | 6 comments Hi, new member here. I was first put on to MS by my grade seven teacher, and in the decades since, have read and reread every one I own many times. Airs above the Ground is my favourite as I am a horse nut, but I really love all of her romantic suspense novels. Wind off the small isles is the only one I am missing. One day when I have the extra cash, I will buy the rare hardcover copy. Just not today!! Can't wait for the next discussion.

message 184: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Minz! Welcome to the group. One of our group members scanned in a copy of Wind Off the Small Isles, and we've been sharing it. Are you interested in getting a copy by email?

Edit, typos. Damned autocorrect.

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments Welcome Minz! I'm sorta new myself, but this is a great group...so welcoming, helpful and fun. You will really enjoy the group read since we all agree there is no one like Lady Mary Stewart.

Judith (judithgrace) | 323 comments 'Tis all true! It will be lovely to read TSP. I hope I can get to a Canadian bookstore somewhere. Would love to browse. I wonder if MS is still read in Canada.

As I write I can see the gorgeous view of the Rockies from our hotel window... It's 61 degrees in Vancouver.

Tomorrow the Rocky Mt. Mountaineer train takes us to Kamloops and Jasper National Park.

Absolutely!! It is one of those things I look for every time I go into a used book store. That was how I eventually found Wildfire at Midnight, but so far no luck with WotSI. E-copy works for me. How do I get it?
