It has been removed along with its "author", as they did not met Goodreads' notability requirement for quotes.

Neville Morley | 5 comments Quotes attributed to Thucydides: the following are misattributed or spurious, and it would be great if they could be removed, as they then continue to be misattributed across the internet...

“Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses men the most.” (in fact from the C19 writer F.B. Jevons, discussing Greek prose style: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thucydi...)

“You should punish in the same manner those who commit crimes with those who accuse falsely.” (There is no trace of this quote in any translation of Thucydides, nor has it ever been included in a Dictionary of Quotations; it most closely resembles a line from the ancient lawcode of Hammurabi. Discussed at https://thesphinxblog.com/2017/10/18/...)

“When will there be justice in Athens? There will be justice in Athens when those who are not injured are as outraged as those who are.” (in fact this is attributed to the C6 Athenian politician Solon: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thucydi...)

“Peace is an armistice in a war that is continuously going on.” (Whatever the recent Wonder Woman film thinks, this isn't from Thucydides; it does resemble a line from Plato. https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thucydi...)

"A collision at sea will ruin your entire day." (Made up by a student at the Naval War College as a joke: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thucydi...)

“The State that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools.” (In fact from the biography of General Charles Gordon written by C19 soldier and author William F. Butler: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thucydi...)

“There are also clear heroes and villains in Thucydides’ history. To a modern audience steeped in the behavioral and social sciences, Thucydides can appear to miss nuances in human temperament, concentrating instead on “objective” and absolute criteria such as timidity and heroism or recklessness versus self-control. In his eyes, human behavior is not predicated on or explained by one’s specific environment or upbringing, but instead directed by the play of chance, fate, and hope upon innate character—conditions universal to all and particular to no man.” (Falsely attributed to Thucydides, where in fact it's from Robert B. Strassler's Introduction)

“In the final analysis, what stands out about Thucydides is not his weaknesses but his strengths as a historian. We note his omissions, but no account of the Peloponnesian War or of fifth-century Greece in general is more complete. Some scholars worry over his cut-and-dried heroes and villains. But is there much evidence to suggest that these assessments were fundamentally wrong? Others argue that his speeches are biased distortions, but no one can prove that any are outright fabrications.” (ditto)

“At times Thucydides may be clearly mistaken in both detail and interpretation, but the extent of his accuracy and analysis astounds in a world where travel was difficult, written sources rarely available, and the physical obstacles to the writing of history substantial.” (ditto)

“Even more extraordinary is Thucydides’ ability to use that knowledge to reach a higher wisdom about the nature of human behavior, whether it be unveiled by plague (2.53), revolution (3.82–84), or war (5.103). And never forget that Thucydides was much more than an accurate recorder, more even than a keen judge of human character and the role that natural law and chance play in men’s affairs (3.45.5–7; 3.84.1–3). He was a profound literary artist as well, emotional and poignant on so many surprising occasions.” (ditto)

Very many thanks.

Gretel (gretelrot) | 76 comments Dear all,

I've been working on the author(s) "David Brody" and am currently splitting the books to their respective authors with the same name. I've seen that three quotes do not belong to David^Brody, the historian, but they belong to a book by David^^^Brody, an Evangelical journalist, and his book on Trump.
I don't know how to "move" the quotes to the correct author, David^^^Brody, so I'd be happy if somebody could help me out.
I'm taking care finishing dividing the books to their respective "David Brody" (so far I've found 5 different people...).

Thanks!

https://www.goodreads.com/author/quot...

Just to be sure, these quotes belong to a book by David^^^Brody, NOT David^Brody.

Thanks! <3

Moved the quotes to David^^^Brody: https://www.goodreads.com/author/quot...
(The author page is heavily cached and can take up to a couple of days to update).

If you want to try to edit quotes, here's how to do it:
- go to the page of that quote. The way to do that is to click on "2 likes", which is a link to the quote page.
- once you are on the page of a quote, at the right is a link to edit the quote.
- on the edit page: enter the number of extra spaces in the author page; the right author will show in the dropdown. Pick that author.
- after choosing the right author, you can pick the right book (which has to be done again since the author has changed) from the second dropdown.

Note: there is a bug where often the title of the book disappears once you are on the edit page. Make sure to remember the title of the book, or keep the original list of quotes open, and open the quotes that need to be edited in a new tab.

So J.Heller quote should just probably be removed.

Neville Morley | 5 comments I’m sorry to be a pain, but I really want to see the misattrubuted Thucydides quotations I listed above removed, as a lot of people then repeat them because they trust in Goodreads. I’m a bit concerned by comments above that quotes can’t be removed if they’ve got lots of likes, even if they’re fake - is this really true?

sam (obsessingovercommas) | 78 comments It is true that there are restrictions on editing based on likes. At least some of these quotes are affected by those, I'm not sure how many. I'll work on checking that.

Robert Schols (schols) | 2 comments Please change the author of this quote to Unknown.
I cannot find any creditable source that van Gogh ever said this. I can also not find the true author of the quote.

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/6423...

There are other places on the net where this quote appears as being van Gogh's, but the source is never mentioned. There is no similar quote to be found translated in Dutch. I also did a search through his Dutch letters and the quote is not there. (http://vangoghletters.org/vg/search/s...)

I don't know how reliable it is, but there is an attribution for the French version of the quote, see https://fr.wikiquote.org/wiki/Vincent... (bottom of the page, "La normalité est une route pavée").

Van Gogh wrote letters in Dutch, but after 1886 mostly in French.

Thank you! That brings us one step closer. I found this thread (http://lists.project-wombat.org/piper...) where someone who has the book says this quote is not sourced, whereas every other quote in the book is.

I have contracted the publisher to see if they can shed light on the matter. Perhaps leave van Gogh's fair name on the quote for now.

1.) Can you correct a typo in this quote:

It should be "say" in the last line, not "day".

2.) Please remove the extra punctuation in this quote:

Between the lines "He wouldn't dare attempt it." and "The thought brought me little comfort." there is an extra period (and probably an extra space).
