Carrie | 11 comments I have a million books! Really, hundreds but who's counting. Anyway... I pick one up start it and put it down. I can not get into anything lately. Help. I need something!! Anything!!! Suggestions??

message 2: by Sasha (new)

Sasha (fearal) | 57 comments I'm easily distracted when I read, even with something I love. I literally could not put down You, if you're into creepy books.

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 78 comments I have a few authors who never disappoint, and are a sure way to get me over rainy days and Mondays, like Dick Francis or P G Wodehouse or Nevil Shute. Short stories collections are another way to enjoy reading without committing to very long or very complicated plots.
Switching genres also works for me, from fantasy to fiction to historical adventures to SF to non-fiction to humour and back

I have heard so many good things about this book! Thanks, I'm going to read this!

Carol (ckubala) Most avid readers get in a slump at one time or another. Try something out of your comfort zone as now's the time you've got little to lose. Make it a short book as one that is long is only asking for trouble if your mind is wandering these days.

I see you read lots of books about dogs. Maybe try one about another animal or a non-fiction one about a dog (with a happy ending). OR how about a good thriller where a broken LAPD detective named Scott teams up with the least likely dog named Maggie to be in a K-9 unit. Quite the team.

Good luck Carrie - you'll get your vibe back I'm certain.

Hi Chyna...if you are asking me I hope you don't feel I was preaching. Just trying to help a reader. I'm new to this group and don't know any of you yet.

oh, good - she turned up here. don't mind her - this is someone who has been giving me grief on one of my review threads all day and has decided to join this group to be unpleasant over here, too. just ignore her and if she persists, i will do something i have never ever done and block her from the group.

message 10: by Sasha (new)

Sasha (fearal) | 57 comments I tracked down said thread and had some fun lurking. Thanks everyone for helping me procrastinate!

I'm assuming you don't mean ME. Will click your name and see what you're reading. Thanks.

hahaaha no, you will never be blocked!! it's an old thread, and it's pretty bonkers and will probably make you lose faith in humanity, so i'd stay away. people are crazy....

Okay, I'm not sure if any of these books will help you because I've never been in a reading slump. ;)
However, they're pretty good, and I feel like that's enough.
Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom--do you like manga?
The Giver

Betsy | 190 comments When I'm in a reading slump, I can have some success by rereading some of my favorites, especially favorite series. It seems to revitalize the reading impulse.

message 21: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) | 39 comments Some times this works for me, and I hope it does now, because I am also in a reading slump. I pick out four or five books that I must/want to read. I then pick up the top one and read perhaps 10-15 pages. Then I put that one on the bottom and I go to the next book and do the same. I keep doing that in rotation, as if I were watching different shows on TV. Ideally, somewhere along the line I will realize that I don't want to put one book down, and I continue on reading that one. Problem solved. If not, I keep doing it until I eventually have all the books read and at least I have read them. Sometimes it is easier to switch back and forth between two books, since that keeps you from getting bored.

message 22: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 11 comments Susan, what an idea! I've never thought to do that before but will try it. My to read list is so long. I think this will be a great way to help shrink that list, maybe? I did reserve You from my local library so I can't wait til that comes in!!

message 23: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) | 39 comments Glad I could help. I thought people would think I was crazy!

message 24: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments I've been in a slump for months! I don't know what's wrong with me. Anyway, I like both Betsy's and Susan's suggestions. I may try them. :) thanks

message 25: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 11 comments Sometimes I read a few reviews that give a book five stars to get myself amped up.

message 26: by Axolotl (new)

Axolotl | 3 comments I'm experiencing a slump ever since I quit smoking. How did I have so much time before? It is rather depressing.

I suggest Temple Grandin. She is fascinating, especially about how animals think. I learned a lot from every page, and she would be a new angle for you, I think.

message 28: by Jessica (new)

Jessica T. (jessicaola) | 18 comments http://bookriot.com/2014/09/24/5-tips... I was in a terrible reading slump... and this article had some great advice... I'm not sure if you are into comics... but relaxing with a trade comic is helpful. It short and easy and usually cleanses the pallet. Good luck.

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (hemingwayshiccups) | 1 comments I'm slumpin', which is pretty normal for summer... I just read Lynda Barry's What It Is, and that was a great palate refresher. I've also done the graphic novel thing and the reread an old favorite thing... I think sometimes I fall into a slump when I have too many books on my shelf to read, so I'll just return everything I have to the library and start over again... seems to help.

message 30: by Jessica (new)

Jessica T. (jessicaola) | 18 comments ya... sometimes just trying to pick something can be daunting.

message 31: by Carrie (new)

Carrie | 11 comments Well, since this post I ve started reading again. I think my slump was/is directly linked to the depressive mood I have been in. I must be coming out of it though as I have just finished A Sudden Light by Garth Stein and a small book of poems about dogs in honor of my beloved dog ,Duke ,whom I just recently lost. I did in fact get the book You from the local library and I started that as well. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

message 32: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 190 comments So sorry about your dog, Carrie. No wonder you were depressed. That's a major blow. Glad you're feeling better.
