Ren Puspita (renpuspita) Hi,

My name is Ren, I'm a girl and from Indonesia (I use hottie pics, just because I love it, lol!) My foray into Urban Fantasy start this year, after 2 years reading PNR and I feel bored. Always love getting some recommendation for any good UF. For now, I enjoy Harry Dresden and Kate Daniels series.

Glad to meet you all :D

Jess (jesstheobssessed) | 1 comments Hey everyone! My name is Jess, I'm 14 and even though I way be young I still love reading as much as any adult. If I had the choice I would read all day. Especially fantasy novels! (They're my favorite)

Grüße und Willkommen, Inga. Welche Deutsche UF Schriftsteller lesen Sie gerne?

Bin teilweise in Deutschland aufgewachsen, war aber leider seit Jahren nicht mehr dort.

message 855: by Amber (new)

Jason Allen Amelio (jasonallenamelio) | 12 comments Hello All!

My name is Jason, I am a writer and musician.

My favorite UF series are The Dresden Files and the Sandman Slim books. On tv I am into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost Girl and Once Upon a Time.

I would also consider The Shadow (both the old time radio show and the comics) to be UF as well and I am a huge fan of that series!

I am married and my wife and I are big Disney nerds, we are at Disneyland about once a month.

I look forward to creeping around the group and finding more great stuff to read!

Lexxi Kitty (lexxikitty) | 18 comments Hello, I'm Lexxi. I'm not sure what is and isn't Urban Fantasy, so am unsure how many I've read. Probably at least 30 to 50.

For US based, I've read most or all of Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher. 3 books by Carrie Vaughn. 1 by Thomas E. Sniegoski.

For London based, I've read everything I can get Ben Aaronovitch in his Rivers of London series (a 4th book is out but not available in US). And I gave 5 stars to Paul Cornell's London Falling by Paul Cornell .

Ah, forgot I could make links. Well, I'll give links to authors I've given at least 1 book 5 stars: Paul Cornell, Ben Aaronovitch, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher

Hi, my name is Lisa! I live bear Oxford in the UK, I've been reading UF probably since the twilight saga was launched. My favourites are Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Gena Sholwater.

Currently reading Revealed by P.C and Kristin Cast.

I love books and I'm still with the paper version!

Kathy Bryson (kathybryson) | 2 comments Hi all!

I'm Kathy Bryson and I like fantasy with a twist. I love the juxtaposition of magical and surreal elements against the everyday and mundane. It throws the ordinary and not usually considered carefully into sharp relief that can be the perfect vehicle for closer examination. I don't do dark, but I love satire. Curious to see what everyone else reads.

That could be a description of what I like to read. Cool. I'll have to do a compare with your Goodreads book list and see how many faves we have in common.

Nathan Yocum (nathanyocum) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Nathan L. Yocum and I write science fiction and urban fantasy. I read a bit of everything, though recently I really enjoyed Cloud Atlas. Look forward to meeting everyone in the group!

message 864: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Hewlett (thomas_m_hewlett) | 25 comments Hi everyone! My name is Thomas Hewlett. I've always been drawn to urban fantasy, even before I knew what it was called. It probably started with Emma Bull, Neil Gaiman, and the Stainless Steel Rat. Recently, it's been Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, Wesley Chu, and Sergei Lukyanenko. I love the mixture of magic, espionage, thriller, mystery, and romance that you can only find in urban fantasy (although I think the name itself is inadequate and we need a better one! Discussion for a later time perhaps??). I'm looking forward to having a community to share with and talk to about all this stuff.

The others don't understand...

message 865: by Fergus (last edited Dec 06, 2013 04:28PM) (new)

Fergus | 22 comments Hi all. I am from Aotearoa/New Zealand so will also say, Tena Koutou Katoa!

I love UF! I think I became aware of this predilection when reading Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge series. Well! A while ago now!

I suspect that writing characters that often travel in the same way we do and eat the same food we do helps authors to write characters that are internally more like us and so characters that I can connect to more.

My favourite stories involve struggle and redemption in the main character's life. I love it when something other that being more powerful or more violent turns out to be the way forward!

My least favourite stories are barely disguised and poorly written abusive porn stories. I like porn/erotica but cannot stand abusive non-consensual stories being touted as romance!

Fav authors in the UF genre:
Jim Butcher
Ilona Andrews
Patricia Briggs
Ben Aaronovitch (the audio books are fantastic! The voice actor does amazing accents and can even do a New Zealand accent well which is a first for me!)
Kevin Hearne

Would Steven Gould's Jumper books be UF?

I am looking forward to many discussions with you all!

message 866: by Scott (new)

Scott | 18 comments Hey there I am Scott, and urban fantasy is one of my favorite genres. Some of my favorite authors are Richard Kadrey, Jim Butcher, Simon Green, and Neil Gaiman. Kadrey is a recent discovery for me, and enjoy the action...

message 869: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (featherlashes) Hi I'm Jennifer. Urban Fantasy is a favorite of mine and I'm always looking for some good recommendations. I'm reading Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series now and am loving it!

message 871: by Gavin (new)

Gavin Frankle (gavinfrankle) | 3 comments Heya!

My name is Gavin Frankle. 34/Male/Shanghai for those with short attention spans. Born and raised in South Africa, I've been living in Shanghai, China for the past 8 years. I speak (heavily accented), read, and write Chinese well enough, which of course makes living here that much easier (and enjoyable).

I'll read just about any work of fiction, listen to most any music and watch just about everything... it all really depends on my mood and whether the content intrigues me in some way. I also have a terrible habit of reading multiple books at once so I don't tend to devour books quite as quickly as I probably should.

Looking forward to learning about more books to add to the pile though!

message 872: by Bryan (new)

Bryan | 6 comments Greetings, all. I'm Bryan, 49, married with one daughter, and I live in Denver. I've been writing since grade school, but only started getting paid for it about seven years ago as part of the design team for an online game called Istaria.

My first book, an urban fantasy, was released yesterday. The sequel is under contract and I'm 45,000 words into the third. I also have a completed fairy tale police procedural up on blocks for a transmission overhaul.

I think that just about covers it...

message 873: by Discfan2 (new)

Discfan2 | 2 comments Hello,
I think I went about this backwards in that I joined the A - Z challenge before posting an intro.

I'm from Nashville TN and I've been going back to UF since I first started reading them way back with Mercedes Lackey's Serrated Edge series.

message 874: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 1 comments Hi all!

My name is Guinevere and I'm from Virginia. I've been a fantasy fan since I was a teenager, but I love any well-written story with great characters and a happy ending in any genre. I'm one of those... happy endings required. I really like Jim Butcher and Cassandra Clare. I also have a special appreciation for any rarer breed of UF, like gods-and-goddesses-among-us.

I'm also a writer of urban fantasy (among other things) but I'm pre-published at present. : )

N.D. Taylor (ndtaylor) | 6 comments Hello, I use the name Nick online rather than my full name but I'm very glad to join this group and to say hello. I'm a 29 year old single mother with two children and I currently attend nursing school. I like to write for fun and pleasure, but I also enjoy reading. My favorite genres are horror, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy.

I'm in love with the Dresden Files and would like to find more novels like it.

message 876: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Marks | 2 comments Hey all!

I'm Rachel and I have four kids. I'm an artist and a writer and I'm always thrilled to talk about books! This looks like a a great group! Looking forward to chatting UF! My favorites are the Kelly Armstrong Underworld series--and I'm super thrilled about the TV show!

Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong Stolen (Women of the Otherworld, #2) by Kelley Armstrong

I'm excited to get more recommendations! :)

message 877: by Lyn (new)

Lyn Johanson | 1 comments Hi everyone!
My name is Lyn. Urban fantasy and paranormal romance are like drugs to me. I sometimes try to abstain, but detox never works :)
I like anything magical, happy endings and strong heroines. I'd love to meet like-minded people, and chat about books, fantasy worlds, or nothing in particular...

message 878: by Leonard (new)

Leonard Chadwick (lennychuck) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Leonard and I read books. I enjoy all sorts of genres, but tend to lean toward the speculative. A friend mentioned this group and the A-Z reading challenge and I thought I'd check it out.

message 879: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi
I'm Alex. I live in York in England. I read all sorts of genres but I'm pretty obsessed with UF and steampunk at the moment. When I'm not reading, I'm writing (I've just finished my first novel which is UF set in Glastonbury - however that's all I'm going to say about that), watching films and going to folk music gigs.
Looking forward to getting to know you all!

message 880: by Erica (new)

Erica (ericaevernight) Hi everyone, I'm Erica. I enjoy various different genres but mainly stick to romance. I live in The U.S of A and really glad I found this group!!

message 882: by Dennis (new)

Dennis Anthony | 19 comments Hi Fellow UF-ers,

Just discovered the group and hope to get some solid recommendations about new writers and books. I've published one (sort of) Urban Fantasy book and am finishing up the first draft of a second. I like any kind of paranormal story but I generally shy away from werewolves and zombies -- although The Last Werewolf was great.

message 883: by M.A. (new)

M.A. Brotherton (mabrotherton) | 20 comments Hello. I'm a huge fantasy geek in general, and sometime around 2005, realized that I loved urban fantasy before I even knew what it even was. I think it all has its roots in the Incarnation of Immortality series and really, truly bubbled to the surface around the time I discovered Harry Dresden. Since then, I've been just sampling and snacking on whatever series or writer I can find to give a shot.

I like to pick up the Urban Fantasy anthologies whenever I can. Things like Naked City and Blood Light, etc. It gives me a snack pack of new UF writers to sample. Since I've begun doing that I've picked up a couple of the Kate Daniels books and the Iron Druid books.

I'm still looking to expand my UF collection.

Mostly I listen to books as audio-format while I'm driving, but I've been devoting an increasing amount of my kindle time to reading fiction. In the past, I've read only non-fiction in kindle format and audiobooked everything fiction.

Anyway, I just love books in general, fantasy more specifically and Urban Fantasy takes a bit of a precedent. I'm not a paranormal romance kind of guy. I just haven't been able to get into it, not that I think there's anything wrong with it. It just isn't my cup of tea. I'm not a big Vampire fan.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello.

Lanie (Lanies Book Thoughts) (lanieadamsk) | 17 comments Hi all! I'm Lanie and about to be from Arizona. I'm a huge UF and PNR fan. Can't even read romance unless it's got some supernatural in it. I love faeries, weres and witches, and some vampires are okay;)! Some of my favorite authors are Karen Chance, KMM, Kim Harrison, and Rachel Mead. I can't wait to chat with yens and get some awesome recommendations.

message 885: by Darrell (new)

Darrell (darrellr) | 1 comments Guess I should have added something myself. Name is Darrell, 36 years old down here in Houston, Texas. Really just started getting into Urban Fantasy this year or toward the end of last. Needed a bit of a break from Fantasy novels so decided to try this direction since a lot of the tv shows or movies appeal to me.

So far so good. Mainly been sinking my teeth into Illona Andrews, Kevin Hearne, Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher. I like to believe I have a rather diverse reading style in regards to fiction since I pretty much will read anything including romance but enjoying my foray into this genre.

message 886: by Tasula (new)

Tasula | 150 comments Hi M.A.
Welcome to the group. I am a fantasy geek too- I enjoy getting away from real life in my reading. Since you don't like PNR (nor do I), you might enjoy some of these authors, mostly gritty and tough with male protagonists, all different- some have vamps but these are not your PNR type vamp- try Charlie Huston's Already Dead and you'll see what I mean, here are some more authors:
Mario Acevedo
Harry Connolly
David Devereux
Glen Duncan
Warren Ellis
Daryl Gregory- Raising Stony Mayhall
Benedict Jacka
Richard Kadrey- Sandman Slim
F Paul Wilson
Michael Carey
Steve Bein (combo of fantasy and UF)
Ben Aaronovitch

That should keep you out of trouble for a while!

Thanks! There's a lot of to-read books on my list from there already. Just out of curiosity, what Warren Ellis would you recommend? I've read quite a few of his graphic novels, but not really anything else.

message 889: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 158 comments Hi Everyone!

M.A., I wanted to second Tasula's recommendations of Mike Carey and Ben Aaronovitch, and add Larry Correia to the list as well, especially if you listen to audiobooks. I've listened to everything I've read of his, and the narrators have all been top notch.

message 890: by Pippa (new)

Pippa DaCosta | 5 comments Hi everyone, I've just discovered this group.

I adore UF and PNR. My favs would have to be Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Mike Carey, Kelley Armstrong, LKH, too many to name here.

Check out my shelves and feel free to add me as a friend if we share lots of books in common.

:)

Can't wait to get chatting with you all.

message 892: by Kimberley (new)

message 895: by Domino (new)

Domino Finn (dominofinn) | 21 comments Hi there. My name's Domino Finn. After ten years in the video game business, I'm writing indie fiction! I like books with a sci-fi/paranormal slant but my interests lean towards Adult more than YA/NA. I'm a strong believer in characters with internal motivations- otherwise things aren't real enough for me. So whatever it is that I'm consuming, tv/movies/books, I need that element of authenticity to be a fan.

Glad to be a part of this group!

message 896: by A.K. (new)

A.K. Michaels (akmicaels) | 6 comments Hi, I'm Ava, I love a whole host of genres, including Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy. I love the escapism of Vampires, Wolves, Angels, Demons, Fairies - love the lot! I also like some sci fi, crime, horror, thrillers - don't like non-fiction books or 'self-help' books. Love my family dearly and hate injustice. Hope to make some new friends.

message 897: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Read | 4 comments Hi, my name is Michelle and I'm new to utilizing Goodreads...I enjoy reading most genres, even non-fiction, but it's kind of like chocolate cake. I have my moments of consuming it in large quantities. But I believe a fairly steady dose of fiction keeps one healthy. Really enjoying this group, and am happy to be here.
