All the elements are there to be emotional later on - just what is going to happen is anyone's guess but it feels sort of like something is brewing!

Review:
I liked the depth of musicality in the book. The author used a lot of musical and lyrical analogy in her descriptions - made the book really feel like it was about music and that the characters were truly musical in nature. I really enjoyed this book. The story development and relationship was built naturally, nothing felt forced. Even though there was immediate attraction between the MCs, it wasn't inst-love and their friendship built before their physical relationship, so when the 'secrets' came out, there was understanding and acceptance instead of false assumptions and anger. I'm looking foreward to the next book though the series doesn't appear to be related by characters, just musical setting.

Review: Not a book to be rushed through. It needs to be savoured, absorbed, pondered upon. Lots of classical music mentioned - as you would expect with a main character who is a pianist. Also lots of Navajo Indian legends - as you would also expect with the other main character being Navajo. All the cycles of life are covered - birth, death, family ties, loyalty, war, broken families, racism, faith and love.
Did I cry? Certainly very, very sad when her husband-to-be was killed just days before the wedding – had me gulping – but no, no tears.
I did enjoy it though - and I certainly recommend it.

I liked this even better than the first book. It seemed a bit more focused. I'm not super crazy about the way the author writes the alpha heroes, they seem a little too overbearing, but when they are being good, they are very very good, so it's hard to take away for that. I liked Emma better than Cara, actually, I liked Cara better in this book too. Emma is just a better kick-ass heroine - she got stuff done and didn't sit around and whine about circumstances. That's what kept it at four stars for me - the great sense of self the heroine had. Next up is a novella - it will be interesting to see how it fits in the story line.

I am glad to have read this and get an ending to the story but the romance made me mad. It was typical alpha-hole who couldn't admit to his feelings and then decides he's not good enough for her once he does admit it (to himself) so just leaves. Not even close to a trope I like. But he grovelled really, really well at the end, so that gave it a half star back :-)

Review: I loved this book! I really enjoy Allen's writing style. It reminds me a little bit of Maeve Binchy. And I love that, just briefly, Clare Waverley showed up. Which also reminded of Binchy's books. I do have to say, like some other reviewers, that I don't get the mindset that holds on to high school labels for so long, but I know that things are different in a small town where people always remember what you did when you were young. Which explains Willa's preference to hang out with the 'transplants' who haven't known her since way back when. But I don't think this is so much about growing out of high school mindsets as it is just growing into your adult self, and finding who you are when you finally get comfortable where you are.

Review: House of Mirth was a slow, but interesting read. Honestly, Lily drove me crazy throughout the book. She is obsessed with remaining in the upper echelons of society and lives only to have beautiful things around her. She would make a wrong move, only to realize it and try to recover, but it was always just a little too late to fix the situation. In fairness, the society at large and the people in general were no help as well. Women of this time period are truly left with very few options for remaining in “genteel” society, and I can understand Lily’s horror of being forced to work to support herself, as foreign as the concept is to us in modern times. Overall, it’s a slow read (which is to be expected in a Classic), but a thought provoking one that I enjoyed.

Review: I just wasn't overly impressed. I feel bad saying that about a Holocaust book, but it's true. I feel like a book about the atrocities that the Jews experienced ought to have me feeling more. This book, sadly, just didn't engage my emotions. The story itself was good, but the characters just didn't grab me, so I went with 3 stars.

Review: This was like a grown up Jane Austen to me. I loved it! It was clever and fun, but also examined the struggles of the different levels of society instead of only focusing on one segment. My only complaint was that the ending wasn't long enough ;). Also, I'm still contemplating if 4 stars is enough!

Review: India Black is a whore and she is completely honest about it. But she owns, and runs her own brothel as it is much better sit back and sip her whisky while counting the cash than to earn it flat on her back. Her entry into international espionage begins when one of her regular clients dies ‘on the job’ so to speak. Turns out the little black briefcase he was carrying has secret documents that the British don’t want to fall into the hands of the Russians – and it looks like it is the Russians who now have them!!! The rest of the story is a none-stop chase sequence as she teams up with a British agent to recover the documents. Intermingled with the edge of the chair and often humorous chase scenes, are long-winded political lectures and way too much detailed historical background that seemed almost out of place and jarred you back from the excitement and into the classroom!

How it fits: Book 1 in the ‘War of the Roses’ series
Date finished: 25/06/16
Review: Cleverly combining fact with fiction, this book is the first in a trilogy about the Wars of the Roses. It takes the reader back to the events that started the war – really an ongoing armed tussle between two great British Houses that each want to take control of the British throne. The tensions had been simmering for decades. Anyhow Young Henry VI is on the throne (has been since he was 9 months old) and is considered to be a weak/mentally unstable king as he is more interested in religion and learning than in military matters. He hates war and just wants to live in peace so he marries Margaret of Anjou to try to form a truce between England and France. Of course everything goes pear-shaped and things start to go downhill. This was an audio book which hubby I listened to on a recent road trip – blood and guts and battles for him and beautiful princesses for me.

How it fits: Book 1 in the ‘Faith Morgan Mystery’ series
Date finished: 25/06/16
Review: This is the first in a series where Faith Morgan, an ex-police woman now vicar manages to get swept up into a murder investigation when the vicar of a small country church dies after drinking the communion wine. Faith is there checking the parish out as possible new vicar when the incumbent retires. Her takeover comes sooner rather than later when the Bishop requests her to stay on temporarily while they sort things out.
To add to the mix Faith soon discovers that the investigating detective is her ex-partner, Ben. They had lived together for a while but parted ways several years before when Faith was called by God to leave her career and become a priest. Ben is an atheist so he did not approve and so they parted.
There is a large cast of characters that can all be considered suspects, all connected to the church in some way and all connected to the deceased in some way that could cause them to want to do him in.
The solving of the mystery gentle and the story moves along fast. There are a few twists and turns before the grand reveal. For those who don’t like a spiritual element, be aware Faith is a vicar and she does talk to God and occasionally God talk back.

The last half of this book was just as sweet as what I've come to expect from this author. But the first 1/3 of the book is why I'm undecided on this one. I was not prepared for a too graphic (for me, anyway) description of a three-way. I nearly put it down and missed Viper becoming a decent human being!
And the therapist character bugged me. She seemed quite unprofessional. But maybe that was what he needed.

Review: I love the Mercy series – Mercy is on kick-ass female. She is a Coyote shape-changer married to an alpha werewolf and runs her own mechanic business. She lives in a world that has the supernaturals living in it – and a few books ago the world learned that there are werewolves, vampires and fairy folk living among us. The book opens as humans discover there are also trolls – evidenced by one sitting in the middle of a bridge and eating cars – sadly some of them with people in them! Mercy and Adam go in to save the day and this kicks off an edge of the seat adventure as they try to prevent an all-out war between the fairies and the rest of the world.

Review: I was a little a disappointed in this one. Terry Brooks is one of my go-to authors for epic fantasy. He is a master at building the tension, and knowing just the right psychological moment to switch to a different character. I just felt that was lacking in this story. It read more like a flat YA fantasy than the classic, high fantasy that I was expecting. It was fine in itself, but not up to Brooks' standards.

I was afraid of this book. I was afraid it would be too dark and sad based on the subject matter and the blurb. But I bought it because of the author - I've read her before and had the same fear of those books based on those blurbs and ended up really liking them. So I trusted that and bought this one - though I kept letting it get pushed off the top of the TBR. Now I've read it and I'm glad I did. The subject matter could have been worse but the author held that fine line of giving enough details so as to not just 'gloss over' what happens to victims but not too many to turn it into a horror or terror book. I loved the heroine, how she triumphed over her PTSD even before the events of this book allowed her to truly beat her demons. She was awesome and the real star of the book. The hero was there to be her foil. He wasn't just a paper character but the story was really hers. She was the real HERO in this book in more ways than one.

This was an okay read. I had a hard time getting into it because the reactions of people to the book the h wrote were a bit over the top and didn't seem to fit the tone of the book. They were mob like reactions written in what I think was supposed to be a humorous vein but the book wasn't really humorous so they just seemed exaggerated. I also did not like the H at all in the beginning. But we weren't meant to since the whole point of the book was to swing him from a cynical jerk reporter out for revenge to a sensitive loving boyfriend. And seeing that progression was gratifying if completely predictable. Like I said, an okay read but nothing breaking new ground. And not even any yummy smexy scenes considering the h was supposed to have written a titillating marriage self-help book that everyone mistook for a sex book....

I really enjoyed this book. It's almost 5 stars for me, and I might yet end up changing my rating. It was pollyanna-ish in some respects yet still a fascinating study of how 1 person's life (or 2 in this case) can have lasting effects on someone else's. There's a symmetry in this book or maybe a circular effect happening that I like. The subject of the Kate's fascination, Reed, a highly successful and mysterious photographer, had a profound affect on her, so much so that she had to understand his motivations and in doing so ended up having a significant affect on his life. Without her fascination, would Reed's life have changed in the way it did? Without her fascination for him, would her own life have changed as it did, would she have ever met the man she ended falling in love with? And if not, would Reed still be stuck where he was before her interference, alone and miserable? It's an interesting thing to think about... if 'this' hadn't happened, would 'that' have then happened, and so on. Beyond that, though, the story was very well written with the past and present seamlessly woven together. We have a beautiful love story woven throughout Kate's own love story. And though hers doesn't that same 'epic' quality as Reed and Sam's it is no less beautiful in my opinion.

This is the second time this year that a book cover has completely fooled me. The second time a cover made me expect a fun, flirty and dirty book and the excerpt didn't dissuade me from that. But I was pleasantly surprised, again, to get emotional and poignant depth in the book. That's not to say there wasn't some smexy! There definitely was but that wasn't the point of the book. I didn't always agree with how the author handled things but it wasn't a surface fluff piece and she had her characters try to honestly explore their feelings. I'm glad I read it and will be giving this author another look. Even though it's tagged as a stand-alone there was definitely fodder for a sequel and I'll be looking for it!

I am slowly working through this set of books having read The Magician's Nephew last year. I'd watched the film some years ago and was sorely disappointed, needless to say the book was better. Written for his god-daughter C.S. Lewis weaves a fantastic tale of a fantasy world where good will always triumph over evil and everything is not as it seems. I loved the link between the previous book and this one, if you haven't read it make sure you do. All in all an enjoyable read.

This was a very good book, I only marked it down because I kind of guessed the twist well before the end. Not a book to be read if you're feeling highly strung. We are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions as Kacey struggles to come to terms with her past while trying to make a future for herself and her sister. A very well written book which in essence is about letting go of the past through forgiveness. Need to read the next in the series.
