Kentucky Avenue

A Slice of Murder (Pizza Lovers, #1) by Chris Cavender
5/5/16
2.5 Stars
Fits: Shelved 4 times as "2011"

Review: Hmmm, having tried cozy mysteries last fall for the first time, I've been more willing to consider them for challenges. But this particular cozy was not my cup of tea. It was a fairly bland mystery, that I figured out about halfway through (maybe earlier), and not much else. No romance (not that books HAVE to have it, but she's widowed and still getting over her husband), not really any humor, mostly just the flat mystery and a bit boring at that.

Now own Kentucky Avenue

Review:
I had been warned that the Bloodlines series isn't as good as the Vampire Academy series. But then I was also told that it is every bit as good, but different. So I hemmed & hawed and generally procrastinated starting this series. But I'm really enjoying it!

In this book, Sydney tries really hard to toe the party line and swallow everything that she's been taught all her life. But she keeps running into instances that contradict what the Alchemist leaders tell her. And she uncovers multiple instance where she is being lied to. I really wanted her to be a bit more like Rose in this one, and just charge forward with what she knows in her heart is right. The only problem is that Sydney doesn't know her heart yet. But that really makes me eager for the next book. Because when she figures out what she wants, (view spoiler)

I now own St. James Place!

Review:
This was quiet, somber read. The heroine had a sense of sadness about her for most of the book. Her mother died when she was a toddler and her father turned into an alcoholic and neglected her. She was raised by her grandmother who she loved with all her heart but still she longed for a family, a mother and her father's love all her life. Just when she thought she had found love and the possibility of creating a family of her own, her grandmother died, her father further betrayed her and she learned a secret that would keep her from her fiance and cause her to run from her home. This was the lowest point in her life but the book went from there to rebuild her. It was a testament to her strength of character that all of the tragedy in her life didn't turn her into a bitter, cold shrew. She never stopped longing for love but she didn't go about searching for it in unhealthy ways - she just longed for what she had lost and what was taken from her. I admired that in her. And when the time came for her to rebuild and repair her broken relationships, she took them because she had learned how quickly things could be lost. She learned to cherish the things that she hadn't lost and those that were returned to her. This was a sweet read and while I didn't particularly like the hero through much of the book, he did love the heroine with all of his heart and when he had the chance to reunite with her, he grabbed hold and didn't let go either. He also learned to cherish what he had.

I now own Water Works :-P

Can I just repeat my review of the previous book? Probably not... The story was different even if my thoughts and feelings about the series haven't changed. This one focused way more on pure romance and didn't have as much of a suspense plot. There was still plenty of action, though. I was also glad to come back and get Mike's story. I knew we would but still glad to have it. He was way more alpha in this than I remembered in At Peace but then again, compared to Cal in that book, any other alpha would appear as a beta. But he definitely had his alpha-ness going on here but still in a more understated way than the previous guys. And Dusty is who we all wish we could be growing up.... I loved her. She was maybe too perfect but wth, it's fiction, so it works for me. It was fun, too, to see an ending for Fin and Clarisse since their teenage love story was so much a part of this one. No idea who's up next - names aren't ringing bells but that's okay. I like surprises.

Review:
This series has been languishing on my TBR for years and I'm finally getting to it. I enjoyed it a lot but there was a lot of tension for me at the beginning because there was just so much potential for BIG MISUNDERSTANDINGS (which I hate). But the author was less predictable than that, thank goodness. Seth was a typical alpha-ahole (with the perquisite heart of gold) and there were times I didn't really like him because he tried to bend Raine to his will using sex. But she was stronger than that and wouldn't let him get away with it - or when she did she knew what he was doing and chose to let him. This is why I liked this book so much. The power differential between the MCs was huge, at least at the beginning, but it was equaled out as Seth's feelings got stronger and/or as he acknowledged them. Raine had a core of steel no matter how soft or naive she was about the world and she refused to be a victim.

The suspense part was interesting though not the real driver of the story, which was fine with me. The villain survived so I expect he'll make a return down the line. I also liked the teaser of the dynamics we got of the McCloud brothers so am looking forward to them as well!

I now own Pennsylvania Avenue Woot Woot ;-)

Read:
Alice-Miranda at School by Jacqueline Harvey - published February 2010
I love boarding school books - probably because I was sent to one when I was 9 for a few years. This book was written by an Aussie author who worked in boarding schools. A lovely adventure - with an evil headmistress a nasty school bully and a girl who only sees the good in people!

A Time to Love by Barbara Cameron - published October 2010

A lovely Amish romance. Our MC is a reporter who has been badly injured in a car bomb explosion. She returns to her Amish grandmother to recuperate - her body and soul both need to heal and the handsome widower next door certainly helps too.

I've seen a couple of hilarious old movies that have a similar idea behind them. Cary Grant is wonderful in one of them. I think Doris Day is in the other one. This book did not have any of the fun light-hearted feel of those movies. It was a terrible situation, with someone bound to be hurt. But the author did a great job of making me dislike Wyatt from the start. And a believable job of redeeming him. Although I think Macy was a bit quick to forgive the horrible things he did and said to her!

This was my first introduction to this author. Which is odd, because this book first came out when I was a kid. And I read a lot as a kid. But I guess I read more horse stories than fantasy. Anyway, because of it's age I went into this one not expecting much. And I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it. And the world(s) building was quite well done (although it kind of seems that enchanters have a power that isn't well defined). Overall an enjoyable read.

I'm new to doing stuff this way, because at AMMP we usually go by Main Page Genre, but when you designate a shelf, I think the book doesn't work unless it has been tagged that way. Regardless of how else it seems like it should work.

But I could be wrong. Opinions? Wisdom from anyone else with more experience here?

At least that's the way I did it in another group I used to play games in.

Did you read another one during the week that could work. Probably, most books published before 2010 will have that tag, because people tag the year they read it. I don't want to take it away from you, but I will if I have to! :)

Read a book where a character is arrested or has been in jail.

Book: Finger Lickin' Fifteen (Stephanie Plum, #15) by Janet Evanovich
How it works: Multiple characters end up arrested/back in jail, as Stephanie is a bounty hunter and the murder is solved
Date Read: 5/19
Rating: 4 stars

Review:
I continue to enjoy the Stephanie Plum books. But I'm careful not to read them too close together. When I do I begin to rate them lower and not enjoy them as much.

This book follows many of the formulas laid out in the previous books.
1. Stephanie can't decide between Ranger and Morelli. In this book she spends more time with Ranger than Morelli, which makes me a bit sad. I'm team Morelli.
2. Stephanie has people she needs to catch. Stephanie lets them go to a different room for whatever reason, and they go out the window.
3. Stephanie has a car fire (more than one in this book).
4. Stephanie is in danger (though Lula is in more danger this time around).
5. Stephanie and Lula make stupid decisions.
6. Stephanie and Lula feed their emotions.

That's why I can't read them too close together. But I really enjoy them on their own. And when Ranger says, "Babe" to Stephanie I get a little weak in the knees. :)

WooHoo! I'm out of jail!
