Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments In April, we are going to give tribute, YLTO Style. Of course, that means that it's not going to be straight forward.

Step One - Name a person to whom you would like to pay tribute. That person may be living or dead, and may be a celebrity, a person of note, a historical figure, or someone in your life.

Step Two - Pick a word that starts with one of the letters A-P-R-I-L that represents that person in some way. Examples:
A - Picasso was an Artist.
P - Jim Morrison is buried in Paris.
R - Wolfman Jack was a Radio personality.
I - Indira Ghandi's first name was Indira.
L - Christoper Lee acted in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Step Three - Use your creativity and decide how your chosen word will be represented in the book that you choose. It could be in the title (sub-titles excluded), the author's name, a theme of the book, set in the location, an occupation, a character. It could even be that person's favourite genre!

When you report the completion of your book in the reporting thread, you will need to explain your process as to how you arrived at your book choice.

There will be no scoring for this challenge.

General Rules:
1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be in any genre.
3. The book may NOT be combined with the Year Long Geocaching Challenge.
4. The book must be read between April 1 - 30, 2016 (based on your own time zone).
5. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose.
6. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read. If reading eBook or audiobook page numbers will be determined by the issue that comes up first on a Goodreads search.
7. Sub-titles are not included.

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments Here is an example using Christopher Lee.

I would pick the letter L because he was a character in Lord of the Rings. Lord would be my word.

Books I could read:
The Lord of the Rings
Day of Infamy by Walter Lord

To be honest, I was scrambling for an idea for April. Last night, I decided to review the suggestions that members put forward, hoping for inspiration.

Sarah, and a couple others were talking about doing a challenge around tributes. My friend's sister passed away yesterday from a long battle with cancer, so this one really appealed to me. I just had to twist it up a bit. :)

Obviously, my friend's sister will likely be the one I pay tribute to next month.

message 13: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also found my person to pay tribute to, and I have a word I can work with, but I haven't decided on the book yet.

Sorry to hear about your friend's sister Janice.

message 14: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Sorry to hear of your friend's sister as well, Janice :(

So sorry to hear about your friend's sister Janice. What a great way to honor her with the YLTO challenge for April.

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments I'm in and my little girl wants to be in too. My person is my Dad, whose birthday was in April. He died in 2005. Katie says she's picking me (you can tell she isn't a teen yet). She's gonna join the group.... and will post below. We'll make her a wall of fame page.

My letter will be L because he was a librarian, and I'm going with the word Library. Probably will be a setting....

Katie says she is picking the word Reading because I love to read (she's got that right). Actually now she's changing it to Animal which she knows I love

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie | 18 comments Hi. I am doing this with my mom. She is who I'm honoring and I am using R=read cause she loves to read. I will go make a Wall of Fame page and we will have to figure out my book.

message 21: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments Hi Katie! Welcome to YLTO. I think that's pretty special that you are honouring your mom in this challenge. I'm looking forward to hearing what book you pick.

message 22: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19337 comments Katie - Welcome to the group and to the challenge.

Beth & Katie - You don't need to make a wall of fame. The mods will take care of that after you earn your first badge. :)

So now we know why you love books. You inherited the gene. It looks like your daughter did too.

My dad's birthday is in April too.

message 24: by Katie (new)

Katie | 18 comments I'm changing my word to A=animal. Mom and I both love animals and I have some animal books in mind.

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments I've decided to pay tribute to my friend's sister, Debbie. She has a house in Phoenix and spent Christmas there. It was an oasis for her. So I'm going to read Phoenix Rising. I have it on hold at the library with 2 people ahead of me.

message 26: by Joan (new)

Joan Katie, welcome many of us love animals too. I am looking forward to hearing about your book.

message 27: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am paying tribute to my grandad, who died in 2005. My word is 'Roses' because he loved gardening and roses were one of his favourite flowers. I am going to read a historical non-fiction book called Blood & Roses: the Paston Family and the Wars of the Roses

message 28: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 26, 2016 08:32AM) (new)

Yesterday, March 25th was Read JRR Tolkien Day, which made me think about all of the pleasure I have received from the author's imaginative books and the movie versions of the stories. Coincidentally, the theme for Tolkien Reading Day 2016, was life, death and immortality.

JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. I am going to read, Out of Africa.

message 29: by Jackie (last edited Apr 29, 2016 05:42PM) (new)

Jackie | 296 comments My tribute is to my sister. She is always an inspiration to me, in so many ways.

The book I have chosen is Inspirations: Poems, Commentaries, and Short Stories by Christopher J. Thomasson.

Completed 4/29/2016

Inspirations Poems, Commentaries, and Short Stories by Christopher J. Thomasson

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments I think it's going to be interesting to see the names of those being honoured this month. I'm off to read about JRR Tolkien Day.

message 31: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments I'm going to start with honoring my mom as well. She was born in April, so I'm using A for April and am going to select a book published that month.

message 32: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think I'm going with David Bowie. I have chosen the word Idol for I. Idol is synonymous with Hero (and David Bowie wrote a song called Heroes). I've decided to read a book about superheroes (although they aren't exactly the nice kind of superheroes who help out the human race but more supervillains as they are power hungry), also known as Epics, who are idolised (and hated at the same time) by the main character David (note same name as Bowie). I plan to read Firefight by Brandon Sanderson. Not sure whether this is a tenuous link or not so let me know Janice if it's not what you're looking for.

message 33: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Mar 26, 2016 01:34PM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments I'll give tribute to Tomás De Mattos, an Uruguayan writer who died last week. (Although I live in the US, I'm Uruguayan, if there's still someone out there who doesn't know :) ).
De Mattos was also a Librarian. He was actually the Director of the National Library of Uruguay in Montevideo (capital city of Uruguay). I'll read a book from the digital library of the National Library of Uruguay (http://www.edu.mec.gub.uy/biblioteca_...). I haven't decided which one yet.

message 34: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I will honor my sister. She's only 29 but she has several health issues (invisible from the outside) that cause her a lot of trouble and pain. Still, she's always positive and optimistic and very strong, and I admire that.

She went on a holiday to a tropical island recently, so island is my word. I will read a book either with island in the title or set on an island.

Sorry to hear about your sister, Peggy. I sympathise, I also have a long term chronic illness which causes me a lot of pain and trouble and is also largely invisible from the outside so I completely understand what she is going through. It's great that she is so positive and optimistic, it's the best way to be.

message 36: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 246 comments I will honour my friend who's had a bone marrow illness for the last 16 years. Her favourite things are potatoes, so I will read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in her honour.

I was thinking around the same lines for my tribute. I am honoring my father, who passed away several years ago. He was my hero. I have a bunch of words I can relate and I'm having some trouble deciding. I was thinking about "pets" because he loved animals and always had pets. Many of his pets were birds (he loved birds) so I was thinking of reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I wasn't sure if that was too loosely linked, since my word is pet and that specific word isn't in the title... You did tell us to be creative with how our word is represented, Janice. ;)

I do have some other ideas, if that doesn't work and other people's ideas are giving me even more ideas. lol

message 38: by Katie (new)

Katie | 18 comments Ooh, if DeMattos is translated to English, one of his books could work for me!

I think it works. David Bowie = Idol = Firefighters in which the heroes are idols. It is a bit tenuous, but I'll accept it.

message 40: by Lanelle (last edited Mar 28, 2016 09:14AM) (new)

Lanelle | 4041 comments I will pay tribute to Alan Rickman who is one of my favorite actors.
He passed away last month.

A - Alan Rickman was an actor.

One of my favorite movies is Sense and Sensibility, in which Rickman played Col. Brandon. I will read Colonel Brandon's Diary.

message 41: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Janice. I'll keep thinking to see if i can find a better link.

message 42: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 16 comments Unfortunately I haven't been able to complete January's challenge. I had so many things to do with school that I couldn't read much.

Anyway I'm in. the person I'll like to honor is Emmeline Pankhurst. She's my role model and I think she was really courageous.

Anyway there's a lot of letters which could represent her, for example she was an Activist. But I'm not sure this word is in the book I'm planning to read.

That's why I'll go with her surname Pankhurst because she wrote a book I want to read.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments Katie wrote: "Ooh, if DeMattos is translated to English, one of his books could work for me!"

GoodReads only has listed his books in Spanish, Katie. Is my guess that his books, if translated to English, will probably be difficult to find.
Are you looking for authors who are librarians too? We could help you here.

message 44: by Elinaly (last edited Mar 27, 2016 12:44PM) (new)

Elinaly This weekend I visited my mom with my family and my sister. My children found grandma's drawer full of old records. So we started to listen them - Michael Jackson, Madonna, Tina Turner, Cher, Boney M, ABBA etc (mostly American pop-stars).
Those artists were all big favourites of myself, my sis and my mom.

And one moment I thought - I will pay tribute to all American great artists whose music was to us finally also freely available after the dissolution of the Soviet Union (my country (Estonia) gained it's independence in 1991)!

1. Since this challenge requires one person, I will pay tribute to Michael Jackson - his songs and especially the words in those songs have affected me in my teenage years the most (Earth Song, Heal The World, They Don't Care About Us, sigh...).

2. Michael Jackson was American "King of Pop".

3. I think I'm gonna go with title this time (not using my creativity much here, lol): American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.

PS! This is great challenge, Janice - gives also chance to know so much more about our group members! :)

message 45: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments I have a lot of that music on my iPad, Elinay. :)

message 46: by Sarah (last edited Mar 29, 2016 12:25AM) (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I've decided to pay tribute to my grandad who died in 2009, aged 95. He was born in August (A) (pretty sure his and my nan's wedding anniversary was in August too) so I'm either going to with a book published in August or by an author who was also born in August. First thoughts are HP Lovecraft (The Best of H.P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre), Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451), and The Gargoyle.

message 47: by Joan (new)

Joan Elinaly, what a coincidence! I just met a woman from Estonia. she was walking her toddler grandson and I was walking my dog. Her optimism and faith in America and the future was inspiring. She came here with political asylum. I had decided to pay tribute to her and the refugees who make America great. So I'm looking for a book that has a tie to Estonia.

Thank you so much for sharing this! :)
And wow... I'm speechless. Yeah, many of us (Estonians) escaped to USA in those difficult times. And those who couldn't had to live behind the Iron Curtain.

What a coincidence indeed - it's just that there are so few of us compared to the other nations and you happen to meet one!
It's also so heart-warming to hear that in this challenge you try to find connection with Estonia! Thank you!
Sigh... I am just truly speechless :)

Ariane | 947 comments I am paying tribute to my grandmother, who will turn 89 this year. I recently learned that she became an immigrant during WWII, so that's the word I'll be using.
I will read a story of an immigrant, still not sure what book it will be.
