I'm so ready for a new shelf announcement today! :)

D.G. | 2752 comments woohoo! I'm ready for the announcement today too.

After reading The Dragons of Dorcastle (The Pillars of Reality, #1) by Jack Campbell , I continued the series and re-read the following 3 books. Sigh...I'm so glad that books 5 & 6 are coming out within a month of each other.

message 256: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments That's awesome. I don't reread a lot of books. Mainly because I just always want to discover all the new books, but maybe I should start doing that. Especially since I recently finished the Grisha Trilogy, but after having read the first book back in 2014 and didn't read the second one until last month I realise I might have enjoyed the second book better if the first one was fresh in my mind.

I love starting series that have already finished however. That way I can read a series pretty close to each other so that I don't forget what happened in previous books.

message 257: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments My reading habits have changed a lot in the last couple of years. Before I rarely re-read and I liked taking a break in between books in a series. Now I re-read all the time (mostly on audio though) and I prefer to read series books back to back.

message 258: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments Yeah - look at our pretty bingo card - (3) three in a rows - love it and it's shelf call day!!

@Rachel - I have to agree with you as the LotU series goes on .... it has become one where I either wait for it to be on sale or get it from the library - not an autobuy

Yikes!

I've discovered that Gena S. is not for me. I've read like 4 books by her and always end up being underwhelmed.

message 260: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments I've read 2 Gena Showalter books and I gave both of them 4 stars, but she's written so many books and series, so it's hard to say if that will continue. They were both 1 books in a series though, and I haven't read any this year yet.

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments I'm going to go with Cake (Blood Nation, #1) by Derekica Snake Cake by Derekica Snake - I've had this on my shelf forever to start - shelved by 1 person :)

message 269: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments I have a found a few here, but will check the shelf out further before deciding. These 2 are up for debate now.

The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1) by Michael Scott A library book
Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1) by Robin Hobb Starting a Robin Hobb readalong next week.

message 270: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments Just had some more time to look through the shelf now.

I decided to go with one of these.
Can you tell me which of these series you prefer to the other?

A Quick Bite (Argeneau #1) by Lynsay Sands The Mane Event (Pride, #1) by Shelly Laurenston

message 271: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25913 comments I like them both, but of the 2 I'd pick The Mane Event (Pride, #1) by Shelly Laurenston

message 272: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I'll be reading A Test of Wills (Inspector Ian Rutledge, #1) by Charles Todd , shelved by 2 people. :)

message 273: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments @Anita-I know this is totally late but I agree with Sandra. I've read both books and enjoyed The Mane Event (Pride, #1) by Shelly Laurenston better than the other book.

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments Shelf: Series to Start
Cake (Blood Nation, #1) by Derekica Snake Blood Nation #1
by Derekica Snake
Rating: 2ish to 3♥ - was hard to decide on a point rating

Review: my first thoughts as I finished this were ' what the hell did I just read?!!?' Sigmund Edward Xavier (called Sex by Marcus) is kidnapped by a vampire on his birthday, Marcus and kept for a year as Marcus' sex toy. He is given a choice to be made into a vampire as Marcus' equal or as a dumb drone sex slave vampire. The other MC we meet is Marcus' sire, Claudius. Obviously, he picks door #1. Unbeknownst to anyone Sex is from a Royal Blood line of vampire - the Blue line that most were taken out (assassinated) years ago. I love vampire stories. I rarely like non-con/dubious con stories - however a few have been very well written and I've enjoyed those, Aleatha Romig's Consequences series comes to mind - I loved this series. Unfortunately this was not the case with this one. Every time I thought I knew where this story was going - I was pulled in a total opposite direction. I felt like I was getting whiplash all the time, lol. I did like Xavier's family, they are Hunters of Vampires - how is that for irony. Also liked Shade, the Hellcat that protects Xavier and teaches him how to control his vampire tendencies and abilities. The book ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. I will probably continue this at some point as there were parts that I enjoyed and I want to see what happens but I'm not running out to get the next one

D.G. | 2752 comments A Test of Wills (Inspector Ian Rutledge, #1) by Charles Todd
Shelf #9: Series to Start
Date finished/Rating: 5/22 ★★★★
Review: Really good mystery, set after WWII, with a MC suffering from PTSD and trying to pick up the pieces of his life after the horrors of the war. I wasn't surprised by the killer but the motive was really good...big enough to merit the guy dying but not so obvious. Definitely continuing the series!

message 276: by Rachel-RN (new)

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre
Series to start
3.5* May 23rd

Man, what a dark, depressing book! So, an apocalyptic event occurs, wiping out life as known. It's a mystery exactly what, until later in the book there are hints to it. Some people were evacuated to a safer area, while the others were left behind to fend for themselves. Some settled in the tunnels and others in the city.
In the tunnels, life is hard and short. Everyone has a job; they are either a Breeder, Builder, or Hunter. The elders are in their 20s. They are stuck in their ways and don't want to hear new ideas or even suggestions. This, in part, is what leads to Deuce's exile.
Deuce starts out very, very naive. This world is cruel and any type of empathy is seen as a weakness. So, victims are blamed for what happens to them. It explained why Stalker has zero respect for Tegan, and also why he admired Deuce so much. The reason for this not being a 4, was the potential setup for Stalker to be one of Deuce's love interests. Fuck no. Love triangles I can deal with, but not when one of them is a cruel misogynist.
The books ends with Deuce realizing there are multiple kinds of strength (and this is why I bumped my rating up 1/2 a star). Overall, this was interesting and I'm curious enough to see what this goes.

Anita Reads | 595 comments You all are so fast. I'm only 15 % into my book. I haven't been reading a lot these past days. I'll probably get some more read tonight.

message 280: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I usually can read 2-3 books a week and by the time Wednesday comes along, I need to pick up something new. :)

message 281: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments I usually do that as well. Right now I can't seem to stick with one book. I read 50 pages in one book, then 30 pages in another, and then listening to half an hour of audio, before going on to another new thing. *sigh*

I hope I'll get back to my usual reading, where I only have 2-3 books going at once.

D.G. | 2752 comments I hear you Anita. I've been stuck on my favorite series since I re-read the first book a couple of weeks ago. And I can't seem to get unstuck!!

message 284: by Rachel-RN (new)

Rachel-RN (rachelgoodbyeborders) | 1368 comments Shelf call will be interesting. Out of 15 shelves, only 3 are non-winning (1st in series and PNR are the other 2). One of them, shifters, would give us 4 in a row, except for supernatural is also a winning shelf for 5 other teams.

message 285: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Oh wow! So many other teams are so close!! I didn't realize!!

message 286: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments OK, so the new shelf is Paranormal Suspense which is a winning shelf for team 18. BUT they don't have ANY stamps of the ones required to win. Should we go for it?

I'm fine either way as this shelf finally gives us 4-in a row.

message 287: by Anita Reads (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments After a lucky start, it went a little downhill for our Bingo card, but as it's only one row we knew it wouldn't take as long as last time.

As for continuing with the next shelf. That's completely up to you. Right now (looking through the first pages of the list) I didn't see any books I wanted to start right away, but if you want to complete this stamp as well, then I'll find something :)

message 288: by ~Melissa~ (last edited May 25, 2016 03:57PM) (new)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments Hey all - I found a book for the shelf call. I need to read it this month for another challenge so I will go ahead with it. I'm perfectly fine with whatever we want to do. So if we want to read and post great - if not no worries :)

If we are going to do this shelf call - I'm going with Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane by Stacia Kane - 2 people shelved as Paranormal Suspense.

message 293: by Anita Reads (last edited May 27, 2016 05:24AM) (new)

Anita Reads | 595 comments I've gone through most of the shelf and I think I'll be reading one of these

Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning World After (Penryn & the End of Days, #2) by Susan Ee

Or a reread: Lover Revealed (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #4) by J.R. Ward

D.G. | 2752 comments Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews
Shelf #10: Paranormal Suspense
Date finished/Rating: 5/28 ★★★★
Review: It took me many tries to finally read this book (the world building is complex and the authors just go with the flow instead of explaining things) but once I switched to audio, I got it. Kate's humor, her strength and vulnerability and just the sheer dangers in this world. This is one of the best UF series out there bar none!

After starting this re-read, I'll be continuing the series until I catch up. :)

Oooh!! Darkfever! Mac may get on your nerves but the first 5 books in this series are just so amazing!

message 296: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I'm finally back to the Kate Daniels series...I'm re-reading #2 now and I'm hoping to continue the series until I catch up (if I can take reading 8 books plus several short stories in a row!)

Thankfully, all the books in this series are in the 5-stars shelf so if that's the one called, I should be ready to go. :)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments I'm doing their Innkeeper Chronicles series on audio and I did their Hidden Legacy book 1 on audio. They use the same narrator for both and I'm pretty sure she does that series as well. I don't think I could hear Curran's voice being the same as Mad Rogan's, lol.
