Jenny (jennytr) | 181 comments I've just read Life as we knew it and i really enjoyed the whole end of the world theme, so I'm looking for more books like that, although that one was YA I'm not too fussed about the genre having said that what I DONT want is books with aliens/space or any fantasy themes and I would prefer it was set now or in the future NOT in the past.

I don't mind if it has romance in it or not but I would like the story line to basically be about something happening to earth and people having to live without electric/gas low food supplies etc, and the struggle for survival.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Krazykiwi | 152 comments Pretty much any book on the bookshelves of the Apocalypse Whenever group, which is more or less dedicated to exactly what you're asking for.

Actually you probably just want to join that group. :)

ETA: But if not, do check out the group bookshelves, they are nicely organised and pretty clearly labelled.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Yes, the Apocalypse Whenever group is great.

Here are some I've read that match this theme:

Stranger by Simon Clark Swan Song by Robert McCammon The Stand by Stephen King I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

Thaydra | 7 comments Swan Song by Robert McCammon and The Stand by Stephen King I definitely second as recommendations! Swan Song is actually my favorite book, followed closely by the Stand. Both great stories.

Jenny, I moved your request to the Requests: for books in general folder - and deleted the duplicate threads. Don't worry if you're uncertain about the correct folder to use. A mod will help out.

On the Beach is set in the 60s. Not sure if that's too far in the past for you.

I'm going to second Day of the Triffids. That is one seriously scary book. Mainly because it's just so plausible.

Emily (emalderwood) | 43 comments The City of Ember series might fit this theme pretty well.

City of Ember

People of Sparks

Michele | 2488 comments Definitely check out the Apocalypse Whenever group -- you will find lots of great ideas there.

Some of my favorites, with the "cause of death":

Lucifer's Hammer - asteroid strike
Nature's End - environmental
One Second After - EMP
Unicorns in the Rain - slowpocalypse (i.e., lots of things just sort of fall apart)
The Girl Who Owned a City - plague
Warday and the Journey Onward - nuclear
Beauty - environmental
Dies the Fire - EMP maybe? I can't recall
The Testament of Jessie Lamb - environmental
Into the Forest - slowpocalypse
How I Live Now - war/invasion
The Stand - plague
The Death of Grass (published in the US as "No Blade of Grass) - environmental

Not apocalyptic, but if you enjoy stories about people having to cope without the trappings of civilization, The Swiss Family Robinson is a real classic. A family is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island for years and has to make, build, hunt or grow everything they need.

Michele | 279 comments Oh you want The Last Policeman. Starts a trilogy and I thought it was wonderfully done. In this series, we find an giant asteroid headed for Earth. No way to stop it or destroy it or deflect it. It will hit, like 6 months from now. Society slowly collapses as this one guy just keeps trying to be a good cop.

Magic Bites is kind of what you are looking for. It's in an alternate Earth where about 30 or 40 years ago Magic came roaring back. Planes crashed, cars stopped working, electricity stopped, anything made with technology started to collapse. It's a "slow motion" apocalype in that science and magic are still fighting it out, although everyone can see that science is losing the battle. This is an interesting series, and the world building is great. It also talks about how hard life is now and how many people died in the immedient aftermath of the first Flare. The MC in this series is a mercenary named Kate Daniels. There is some romance, but it's very slow growing (over the course of several books). I thought I'd throw it into the mix just because of the world building.

Sam Esmeralda | 34 comments Perhaps some of these titles will interest you:
Invitation to the Game by Monica Hughes.
John Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar
John Christopher[s The Death of Grass (published in the United States as No Blade of Grass), Empty World, The Guardians, and The Sword of the Spirits trilogy/
Herworld by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Neuromancer by William Gibson if cyberpunk would interest you.
Octavia E. Butler's Parable of the Sower
The S.M. Stirling 'Dies the Fire' trilogy might meet your interests. if it is okay that when the laws of physics change people need to pretty much go back to the middle ages technology.
John Ringo's Council Wars series starting with There Will be Dragons. Wikipedia says it has high fantasy, but the 'elves', 'orcs', 'dragons' etc were all genetically modified creations/adaptations.

Rachel Sinclair Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank. I loved it, have reread it, and I note with interest that when I called up the link, there were class notes and discussion guides, so at least one other person agrees with me!

Leave the World Behind is the beginning of a scenario like this.
