I started Goblin Emperor over the weekend, but I wasn't in the mood for it. For some reason I expected a lighter fantasy. I'm putting it in my "maybe later" stack, for now.

I've had The Enchanted on my wish list. My library is supposed to have it. But I haven't found it yet.

Lee | 939 comments I'm finishing up The Coldest Girl in Coldtown this morning. It's a 3 star. Not horrible. Not great. It's a decent YA vampire book. Sort of reminds me of Anne Rice with its mix of horror and romance. Yeah, there's a vampire romance in it, but it's not like Twilight.

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments Reading The Battle For Wondla. Good, though not much has happened yet.

Sinistmer | 212 comments Gave up on A Darkling Sea. I wasn't really getting into it.

I'm now reading Natsuo Kirino's The Goddess Chronicle and How to Be Danish: A Journey to the Cultural Heart of Denmark by Patrick Kingsley. Both are good so far. I also got the second book in Brian Vaughn's Saga, so I'm excited to read that. The art is so cool.

Lee | 939 comments I'm reading The Bone Season. I didn't know what to expect - some kind of contemporary fantasy - but I'm really digging it so far. Sort of a futuristic dystopian superpower thing.

I'm liking it. But it has more of a romance thing than I thought it would. Not that it is a romance. But it does seem to be going in that direction.

I thought about getting The Bone Season on audio, but I checked the ratings both here and on Audible and they weren't that great from what I remember. Look forward to seeing what you think of it.

message 160: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I started Let the Right One In last night. It's, uh, definitely more gruesome and disturbing than I thought it was going to be. I already started having dreams about it. :( Happens every time I read horror. I'm going to keep reading though because I'm definitely liking it.

I think I might read something lighter before bed to cleanse my mind. Just not sure what yet.

message 161: by James (new)

James Parsons | 4 comments I am finally going to start reading Clive Barker's Next Testament comic book series, which seem very similar to his previous metaphysical fantasy like Imajica and The Great and Secret Show, also reading more Arthur C Clarke and some horror including James Herbert and short fiction.

I'm sorry to say, I can't recommend it. The beginning is strong, but it quickly went down hill for me. There's interesting ideas, but the book is very sloppy.

Definitely won't be reading the 2nd book.

You should. Reviews seem to be pretty divided, you might like it. It's not horrible. But in my opinion it could've benefited from a better editing job.

Lee | 939 comments I'm reading The Shadow Society right now. It starts off like the typical YA Romance/Fantasy - misfit girl in school catches the interest of a sexy and mysterious boy and finds out she's hiding a secret - but then it changes gear somewhat and is actually quite good. Not great. But good.

Felina Nienna wrote: "It starts off like the typical YA Romance/Fantasy - misfit girl in school catches the interest of a sexy and mysterious boy and finds out she's hiding a secret..."

That made me laugh. Do you think they'll ever stop making books that include that plot device? I'd like to read a story where an every day average girl catches the interest of a every day average boy with nothing mysterious about him and finds out he's hiding no secrets but they're both just kind of cool so we like to read their story. Maybe on a regular average date they encounter a werewolf and that's how the story goes. Ha ha.

message 168: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Right?? I've been reading a lot of YA lately, so I shouldn't complain.

Now I'm reading Firebrand. I picked it up randomly at the library last week, and I'm really enjoying it.

message 169: by Lee (last edited May 16, 2014 04:01PM) (new)

Lee | 939 comments So finished Firebrand. Good book, but a rushed and strange ending that sets up a sequel. Undecided if I want to continue or not.

Now I've started City of Dark Magic. I thought this would be a light urban fantasy, instead I feel like I'm reading a porno. Really. Ugh. Unfortunately it's my book, not the library, so I feel like I should finish it. But... Just... Ugh!

17% -

(view spoiler)

I had high hopes for it initially (the summary sure sounded good) but quickly lost interest due to multiple factors. However, your mileage may vary...

Lee | 939 comments c.o.lleen ± (... never stop fighting) ± wrote: "Hmmm... lemme know if it continues to be that bad, and I'll take it off my to-read list."

It is not fantasy. It's a political thriller (that's not too thrilling). If I had known that, I wouldn't have gotten it. There is quite a bit about Beethoven (the heroine is a supposed expert on his life) and that's interesting.

There is one aspect that could be called 'supernatural' (slight spoiler), (view spoiler) I actually do like that, in theory, but there's not enough of it.

message 173: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Okay. So I decided to stop being lazy and get off my butt (while sitting on it) and pick up the 2014 series challenge again. I finished Dead Ever After, officially finishing the Sookie books, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, though bad enough. I read The Warded Man, a reread, I love the first half, second half... not. And now I'm reading The Desert Spear.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Great, Nienna!

I started Mort and it's slow going, as expected. The book is fine, I just can't seem to get it together and dive into reading anything...

message 175: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm currently reading The School for Good and Evil, which is an ok MG read so far (but which I somehow got into my head was a GN, which it's totally not), and I'm also very slowly making my way through The Map of the Sky as my workout read.

message 176: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes I'm reading The Jennifer Morgue by Charles Stross. It even fits into my geography challenge for the United Kingdom.

HomeInMyShoes We need a commonly used abbreviation dictionary around here and a common definition for what genres and age ranges really are. MG, YA, PA, FA, SO, LA, TI, DO

Yea, I definitely need a guide... It's getting really silly with all the genres in my opinion...

DoodlePanda | 506 comments I just read The Cabin
It was kinda creepy, and I rarely get creeped out by books :)

I have also (finally!!) started The Martian
I have only read one chapter, but it looks awesome!!

Oh and I started 314 a while ago, but couldn't get into it, so I'm reading the other stuff in between :)

PA is clearly Pennsylvania. No other PA matters.

message 198: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I'm reading The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. I love this book. And with a title and cover like that I had high hopes. It's the kind of book you read to enjoy reading more than the story itself. But I love the author's style.

message 199: by Christine (new)

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) I am 1/3 through with Serenity

message 200: by Lynn (last edited May 24, 2014 12:13PM) (new)

Lynn I am reading a book called Prisoners by Kate Stofer..... It's a police crime drama set over in Britain.... So far it's pretty good :-)
