It sounds a lot like Stranger with My Face by Lois Duncan. A girl tries astral projection only to find she can't go back to her body because it is occupied by the sister she never knew she had. It's been made into a TV movie too.

For a few months I've been preoccupied with this book I read in early 90s, in middle high school (obviously written in English), but can't recall the author's name or book title.
Not sure if it would qualify as fantasy or magical realism or what, but all I remember is that the story was about some young girl, maybe herself going to high school, practicing some sort of levitation, maybe she found a magic book and was trying it, or quite less likely it was a religious book. Yeah probably magic book, and I do recall she on and off trying it to see if she can do the thing in the book.
I think in one scene she's able to levitate all the way to the ceiling of her room but I don't think it's really her body, it's likely her soul or mind or something. Like she's actually up there, so it's not a dream, it's actually happened, but not her body.
Why not her body? Because I vaguely remember that the major conflict of the novel is that some other girl, maybe a sister or adopted sister or a friend or a dead person, discovers that she's doing this and manages to enter her body while her soul had learned to go higher and higher and had been flying outside all over the place.
So when she, or rather, her soul, goes back home, to her horror, she realizes there is another soul moving her body and that it's impossible for her to tell her mother or anybody else, nobody can hear her, and she's a bodily soul.
I don't remember how the book ended but it left a real effect on me emotionally and a few months ago I had a dream about that and can't put it out of my mind. I also think the girl had some issues with her mother and maybe they had fights and things.
I would much appreciate it if someone can help me figure out what book it might be. Thank you.
