Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 808 comments I wish I was into audiobooks. I've tried a couple of them and I liked the stories, but I have a really hard time with hearing something and remembering it. I'm definitely a visual learner and remember the plot a lot better when I visually see it on the page.

After last month, I realized that reading so many books at once was just too much, although I did like the idea of reading a multiple amount of books at once so I could pick and choose what I wanted to read on my mood in that moment.

Right now, I'm just trying to find a rhythm so that I keep reading. When I worked for Boys Town for 3 years, I just didn't have any time to read and it really sucked because I'd hear about all these good books and just never had the time.

My goodness, there's so many cool conversations/people to talk in this thread!!!! It's gonna be a great read-a-thon :D

2: Where in the world are you? South Florida, USA
3: 3 words that describe me Smart, stubborn, sloppy
4: 4 things you may want to know about me

- I have a one-eyed cat named Jasper and she's the most adorable little fluff ever
- I love Disney, Muppets, cartoons, and all kinds of things I'm too old for
- I ramble like nobody's buisness
5: What, if any, are your goals for this RaT?
I'd love to see how much I can do for March books without overwhelming myself - it's really easy for me to start stuff and not finish it D: so I'm hoping just to have things to apply to the leprechaun challenges and to have fun
6: What was the last book you finished? Before the one I just finished for the read-a-thon, I think it was Cinder by Marissa Meyer

4: 4 things you may want to know about me
I'm a mom of 2 beautiful little girls. Cadence Michelle is my oldest, and she's 11. Elizabeth Michaela Grace is my youngest, and she's 10.
I can be quiet and shy until I get to know people.
I am a newly converted Goodreads challenge addict
I have a really silly and goofy sense of humor sometimes.
5: What, if any, are your goals for this RaT?
I am just going to do the best I can do.
6: What was the last book you finished?
The last book I finished was The Lost Heiress (Relic Master, #2) by Catherine Fisher ...it is the 2nd in a series even though I haven't read the first and I really enjoyed it. My main reason for picking it up was because a challenge I'm doing needed a book with a chalice on the cover.

[Day 1: Introduction Questions]

1: Name and/or Username: Dawn
2: Where in the world are you? Washington State, south of Seattle.
3: Three words that describe me: Self-derogatory, ambiverted, kind.
4: Four things you may want to know about me:
1) I love to organize, but I still have hereditary hoarding tendencies, especially with books. Most of my house is clean, but I have serious problem areas. Those areas are hidden behind closed doors (a couple scary closets/storage areas). My head tells me I have too much stuff; my heart doesn't listen to that stupidhead, um, head.
2) I adore my kids and find they are my greatest accomplishment in life. They turned out really well. I have no idea how that happened.
3) I think my inner self may still be stuck at around 18 (and skinny); my outer self...not so much.
4) Other than Outlander and the first couple seasons of GoT (which were marathoned years after they aired), I haven't watched TV since 2010.
5: What, if any, are your goals for this RaT? Oh, I just do these for fun and to see right in front of me how much reading I'm getting done every day. I don't stress out about it because life happens, some days we can get a lot of reading in, others we have to actually talk to people.
6: What was the last book you finished? Kiss & Hell by Dakota Cassidy. Right now I'm reading The Last Madam: A Life in the New Orleans Underworld by Christine Wiltz. Really good so far!
Kiss & Hell (Hell, #1) by Dakota Cassidy The Last Madam A Life in the New Orleans Underworld by Christine Wiltz

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 808 comments @Dawn I have such a hard time NOT binge-watching on GoT. I'm currently re-watching all the seasons again in preparation for season 6.

I also have a nasty habit of hoarding books. Just last month I went through all of my books and donated about 1/4 of them, which ended up being about 200 books O.O

I would send a picture of my craft room (where most of my books are), but I'm too embarrassed. I think a forklift may be required at some point. I'm getting worried about the weight of all the books crashing through the floor into the garage below.

I'm making it sound worse than it is. I have two tall floor-to-ceiling IKEA bookcases, 6x4 cubed ones (if you know what I mean). They are full, at least three levels of books deep, and I still have boxes full of books in front of them and on the other side of the room. I get rid of books once I've read them, unless they are ones I truly love or are classics that I know others will want to read. My problem is I keep picking up more. I have to stop that!!

I am also ambiverted. I never knew that was a thing until I decided to write a post on my blog about being both introverted and extroverted. Who knew, that's already a thing. It helps to know that a huge part of the population doesn't fall in to either category, but can be both, depending on the situation.

That's exactly it. I prefer to be alone (and read) and I definitely need time to myself to regroup after being around people, but I can pretend to feel normal (ha!) and function just fine when in a group. I'm sure glad to get back home after the "ordeal" is over, though!

Me too! I would also rather be alone and read, and I need my "I'm by myself, so don't bother me" recharge time, but I do make friends really easily, and sometimes I get really excited for gatherings and such, though I can't spend hours and hours at these events. Also, though I do make friends easily, I prefer to talk to people one on one, or in a very small group for any long-lasting relationship to take place.
There are also times when I don't specifically want to be alone, but I want to be around one person, like my boyfriend and do alone type things, like read. I like the being around people bit, but not the interacting with people bit all the time.
I thought I defied catigorization, until ambivert entered my vocabulary.

Holy goodness, that's a metric s*** ton of books! :D
I sort of have the same problem, but, luckily, I can't read print do to my blindness, so all of the books I have are electronic. Sometimes I worry that my phone and computer are going to fill up with books, and I won't have room for anything else. :D
I have a compulsive browsing problem. Oh, that sounds good, that sounds interesting, and that, and that, and I want that, and I might read that eventually, and oh, I have the first in the series, so I'll take number 2, and 5, and 8, and 10, and here are those lovely boxsets that are 99 cents...I'll take as many of those as I can find. Jeesh, there's absolutely no way I could read everything I have.
So, I sorta know how you feel, though I don't have a tangible result, like you do.

message 62: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Hum.....I've never heard the term ambivert. It sounds like you are introverted in the definition that I was given. Being introverted doesn't mean that you don't go to parties or make friends easily. The explanation that I was always given was where do you get your energy from --- extroverts get energy from interacting with others and introverts get energy from being alone.

I do know that whenever I take a Myers-Briggs survey, depending on my mood, I'm either introverted or extroverted --- that's the only one that changes for me.

Anyway --- thanks for teaching me a new word.

Rylie | 298 comments JoLene wrote: "Hum.....I've never heard the term ambivert. It sounds like you are introverted in the definition that I was given. Being introverted doesn't mean that you don't go to parties or make friends easily..."

When I took the Myers-briggs survey, I was 5 and 5, introvert/extrovert. I took it again, same result. I looked at both portraits, the introverted one that matches the rest of my type, and the extroverted one, that matches my type, and there are definitely qualities of both that I see and qualities of both that I don't see in myself.
I thought, as well, that I fell more on the introverted side, gaining my energy from being alone, but I tell people that I'm more of an introvert, and they laugh out loud at that idea. "You're a social butterfly" and "you enjoy people too much" etc.
So, I'm happy with ambivert, and being in the middle, and sometimes being more of an introvert, and sometimes pulling out the extroverted tendencies. :)

You might be right, JoLene. I know I used to be a lot more social. For some reason as I've gotten older, I've become more uncomfortable in social situations, but I can still fake it. And once you get me talking, I don't stop. It's weird, but I'm the same way with talking on the phone. I actually feel anxious when the phone rings, but if it's a friend, I can talk and talk and talk. That might be why I chose the middle ground (ambivert) for myself rather than just saying I'm introverted, which is definitely where I'm more comfortable.

I enjoyed it quite a lot. It lead me to research the history of the Congo a lot more. My only complaint is that it was unnecessarily long. It could have been 100 pages shorter and just as good.
But do read it, it will make you think.

Lots of video gamers --- I play short games on my PC/iPad. However, before we were married my husband and I used to play the puzzle games like Myst, etc. They weren't as much questing. Is Skyrim a PC or platform game?

@Jex: I checked out GeekGirlCon --- very cool. I didn't see a schedule, but do you have tabletop gaming?

@ Stephanie: I loved the Stardust movie --- and I remember it being appropriate for teenagers.

@Karrie: I also love Sharon Kay Penman. Do you ever read her blog (linked here on GR). She's a huge Game of Thrones fan. It's sort of fun hearing fav authors geek out over the same things that you do :-D

JoLene ~ Skyrim is a PC and console game but for the best experience, PC is the way to go. The company allows modded content so the base game in itself is amazing and on top of that, there's thousands of mods that is everything from new lands and quests to clothes and houses. It is a TON of fun. Not a game I would have ever thought I would get into but when I heard there were books in the game, I decided to give it a try and I was hooked from then on! It's soooooo much fun!!

I'm a puzzle girl at heart. That's my favorite. I started off with old games like 7th Guest and Shivers and some Myst. Now, Portal is my first puzzle love.

Stephanie | 194 comments To everyone professing their love for Disney (Karsyn, Melissa and Molly so far, but everyone who does is certainly included)- you are clearly extremely cool people who I need to get to know better :) I have been obsessed with Disney for a long time- parks, movies, the man...you name it, I am excited about it. I resented not living in California or Florida for a little because it meant that I had to work at Orange Julius as a teenager and not Disneyland or World.

Curiosity, here- who prefers the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland over the World? I know I am in that camp. Something about the old man in the rocking chair, I think. The restaurant probably gives it an edge too.

It was more disappointing for the book because the writing style was really fairytale-esque and beautiful. That makes me think, "Oh! Aviana can read this one!"

Aviana is my 8 year old. She has what we have termed "focus issues" (Inattentive ADD- we don't want her to think that anything is wrong with her, it's just the way her brain works) and I am always looking for things that will hold her interest and help her with organizational skills. Until very recently, she was nearly blind in one eye (thank goodness that patching helped it get better) so it is always hard to get her interested in reading, which hurts me a little because I love it so much. It just seemed like the kind of thing she will really like and I am sad I cannot introduce it to her sooner.

Otherwise, it was really good. I gave it 3 stars for the inclusion of the sex, but it was probably closer to 4. I was charmed by the idea that a star could fall to earth as a person and everything that followed. Plus, Neil Gaiman can pretty much do whatever he wants and I will read it. :)

I had WDW in my backyard, and it was amazing. I do miss the parks, but I don't miss FL or the heat. I am definitely a cold weather gal. I wouldn't mind moving more north if we could (we're in the Mts of NC right now), but I don't think my Hubby could take more cold. Course, it'd be different if we had a car and He didn't have to walk in the snow/crappy weather.

But anyways, Disneyland's Pirates is definitely unique but neither version were one of my favorites. I'd usually go on the one at the MK for an event, or to get out of heat since it only had lines in the really busy seasons.

I am definitely partial to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion though! I love that the stretching room is an actual elevator and when I got to see the Nightmare before Christmas change, THAT was fantastic!!

Molly and I were having a discussion about the difference between DL & MK. DL just has a different feel to it. I loved it the few times I've gone. And I love Fantasmic, but the one at DL will always be slightly better to me. :D I got to experience it from Club 33 one time too, so that was a real treat! :)

Yayy another Disney fan! I love both Pirates' rides. But you are right that the beginning of the ride in DL is so cool. My family and I go to the World every year so to see the beautiful differences in the same rides when I was 21 made me feel even more like a kid lol. Have you eaten in the Blue Bayou? Daphne is my real name. I use Hetaira for my gaming and other place alter-ego.

2: Where in the world are you?
Little old Ohio.

3: 3 words that describe me
Traveler, Explorer, Magpie

4: 4 things you may want to know about me
1. I LOVE to travel. Absolutely adore it. My family and I have always tried to travel when we could, but several years ago we decided to make it more organized. Now, each year my mother, brother, and I pick somewhere fascinating on the globe and spend most of September there. We've been to some incredible places. Like Vlad's castle for a Halloween party on October 31st a few years ago. Last year, it was Italy and Malta. This year, it looks like we've settled on Peru and some time in the Amazon.

My mother's favorite saying is that, "She wants to leave us memories - not things."

2. I help rescue wolfdogs. I used to do all high-risk canines (my favorite were always the dickish eastern breeds), but I was asked to try to rehabilitate my first wolfdog several years, and I haven't looked back since. I currently share my house with 4 canines and a wolfdog. Mirza, Thutmose, Xerxes, and Theseus are my canines. Tesla is my wolfdog. He phenotypes as a mid-high content wolf/malamute cross, but it's impossible to know his exact genetic percentages because he is a rescue.

3. I'm a polyamorous, eccentric, and reclusive chick. My parents were amazing, and they never pushed a specific lifestyle or moral code on my brother and I. I've been polyamorous since I first started playing house with my stuffed animals and GI Joe characters. It never occurred to me that I couldn't love and share my life with as many fellow humans as I wanted. I just celebrated 15 years with my 'fiance' and 8 years with my 'boyfriend' - my fiance has two long term loves also. One of which just moved into our home a few months ago. She a cool human. The best part is that she loves cleaning and keeping house, so I pretty much just scored a live-in maid. It's a pretty cool gig.

4. I'm highly accident prone and get odd illnesses all the time. It's a running joke in my family what injury I'll get on each vacation. I broke two toes in China in two different incidents, got a bacterial infection in Romania, was hit by a motorcycle in India that turned my entire leg black from internal bleeding, and fell down a 30ft or so boulder on a mountain in Maine. That's just my vacation injuries.

5: What, if any, are your goals for this RaT?
I'm aiming for at least one book a day, and completing at least one goal in the Road to St. Patricks or RaT a day. I love these challenges because they make me explore all kinds of genres, authors, and eras.

6: What was the last book you finished?
I just finished The Castle by Franz Kafka. It was a five star book for me, and one I plan on revisiting at least a couple more times. I would have never discovered it if not for doing a search for books with "castle" in the title because of a goal to Road to St Patricks. That's why I LOVE these challenges. :)

Karsyn (imzadi) I've never heard of ambivert either. How neat. That was me, for most of my life. I once too those tests and I was all of 2 opposites and none of the other 2. It was weird. I definitely used to be both, depending on the situation. In my last few years in FL I had 2 good friends who were complete opposites. One was chatty, one is quiet. With the chatty one, I listened, with the quiet one, I talked.

I definitely can adapt to my surroundings though nowadays I've become more introverted. Never thought that would happen. It doesn't show online though, online I'm definitely still outgoing. :)

Rylie, I'm so glad you liked Great Zoo than I thought you did. :) His stuff is over the top, in a big way, but I love that about him. I don't know that that one was that much more out there, his Scarecrow and Jack West series are all guns blazing as well. Just minus the dragons. :) I definitely am all about non stop action in my books, I prefer it.

But i'm glad you did like it. :)

@Samantha - way to go! I even keep the ones that I have read - even if I know I won't read it again....no sense in that at all! ☺

Karsyn - I also got a little bored by the time I got Checkmate. "Opening Moves" and "Every Crooked Path" happen before the Chess Series.

He also has a YA series "Blur Trilogy" and 2 books in The Jevin Banks Experience. Those are pretty good also. ☺

Karsyn (imzadi) Welcome to the newer ones chiming in! :)

Indiwyn ~ I love ramblers! I'm the same way about the subject I love ~ books, gaming, theme parks.... I hope you are able to stick with your books this time and you have a ton of fun!!

Joanne ~ welcome to the madness that is challenges! :) It gets addicting really really fast. Looking forward to getting to know you so you aren't quiet. :D

Greenie (Dawn) ~ My inner self is a lot younger than my outer self as well. :) I wish the outside could reflect the inside. I'm glad you just have fun for read-a-thons. It worries me when RaTs or challenges stress people out. I'm just all about having a good time and having fun.

Lauri ~ 20 books at a time? Wow. That's quite a lot. Does it keep you from getting through all them, or do you read that many in a short amount of time? I miss cruising. With my ex, we traveled, a lot. I don't miss him, but I miss traveling. :) We were able to go on 5 cruises, 3 Disney (super cheap, he worked at the cruise line at the time) and 2 Royal Caribbean. Of course he's taking his wife now all around the world. I didn't get that. LOL! I hope you are able to go sometime. They are fun. I hope to take my Hubby on one, someday.

Karrie ~ Welcome! I hope you are able to get some LC, and have some fun as well. :)

Stacey ~ Hi neighbor, well sorta. I'm in NC too. I've never been to Raleigh, that I remember anyways, maybe passing through before. I haven't been able to explore this state, we've only been here 4 years. I really wanna!

Daphne ~ You sound awesome!! LOL! I had the complete opposite upbringing than you. My birth monster was the kind that shoved the "don't do anything wrong or you are going to hell" at me, and I believed her. I had an Uncle R & Uncle D and it wasn't until I was in my 20s that I realized they weren't just good friends. I was that sheltered. I wish I had been raised by someone like your mom, she sounds wonderful. I don't know what having a family is like. It's just me and my Hubby, everyone else hates me. My brother might have been the black sheep but I'm the devil, the plague an every virus in the world on top of that. :/

Lucy ~ That is a lot of L's! :) I'm partial to K's myself. This is obvious because my "real" name isn't Karsyn. I gave that to myself. And my gaming alter-ego is Kanji. :) I love gigglers! :D

Erin ~ Welcome! I hope that you are able to get through all the books you have planned for March. Hopefully the RaT will help, or at least be really really fun. :D

Oddly enough, I'm liking Great Zoo more and more as I read Haunted Ground, this supposed thriller, that has absolutely no action at all. I could use some dragons, well, maybe not, but some guns...a car chase...anything besides talking about human remains and walking through houses. At least with Great Zoo, I'm like "go go CJ, you can get out of this situation...and this one...and did you seriously just hang from your fingertips with dragons everywhere and someone else hanging off of you and manage to pull of a crazy, ridiculous escape?!" This one I'm like, meh...someone found a ring. Cool, I guess.

2: Where in the world are you?
Placerville, CA - one of the few towns that survived the gold rush in 1849

3: 3 words that describe me
Smart, tall, theater-geek (it's hyphenated, it counts)

4: 4 things you may want to know about me
1. I love theater and have been in 8 shows at my local community theater, including a beggar in Les Miserables and a chimney sweep in Mary Poppins.

2. I take horseback riding lessons in a discipline called dressage - it basically involves the horses taking complicated steps and is sometimes called "horses dancing."

3. The school I go to is a Montessori school which means it focuses on letting kids learn at their own pace - as a result I'm 2 years ahead in math!

4. I participate in Science Olympiad which is a competition for kids grades 2nd through 12th where they do study events - study then take a quiz with a partner, building events - build something and test it on the day of the competition, and do it events - practice something like forensics then prove your skills. I built a bottle rocket for a Building event and managed to make my egg survive the landing!

5: What, if any, are your goals for this RaT?
I don't have any, I just want to have fun!

6: What was the last book you finished?
The last book I finished was Voice of Gods by Eleanor Herman

That's what I was doing as well! I read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West once and absolutely hated it. After I watched the play, I despised it even more because I loved the ending of the play so much better. Even though I hated it, I held onto it for years after I read it. When I actually went through my books and looked at them one at a time, I realized there were quite a few that I had no intention of reading (got them for $0.25 at a library book sale) or had no intention of reading again.

Look forward to getting to know you too! I seem to have been coming out of my shell more since I'm getting used to how everything works on here. At first I was just trying to figure out the challenges, commands(html), etc. Now that I'm getting the hang of it I have had more time to start getting to know other people on here who love reading just as much as I do. It's nice to have friends who like to read. =)

I think the Disneyland will always have my heart. Disney World is super legit, but I couldn't go there as often as Disneyland. I realize that Walt wanted to improve upon Disneyland, and there are certainly more things to do in Florida, but there is something charming about the original. My family tends to go to one of the parks about every other year or so, the vast majority being Disneyland, so I may be biased.

Is it weird that this doesn't really bother me? I think Walt liked the authenticity and I have extreme respect for his vision and dedication to everything he did- for animation and for theme parks. He literally changed the way people thought about things that until then had never really been taken seriously.

Pirates of the Caribbean is probably my favorite ride, if not it is definitely top 5 for me, real skeletons or fake. Fake skeletons still look creepy :)

Since I was in junior high, pretty much every time we visit (every other year or so, right now it will be extended because we are waiting for the Star Wars to be put in...and then the crowds to die down a little) we eat at the Blue Bayou. I really enjoyed everything I have had there, although I can't remember specifically what the dishes are off the top of my head. I do remember that there is a dessert with treasure chests featured that is pretty awesome. I love the atmosphere of eating the Bayou, though. There is something about being able to look across the way and see all the houses and the smell and everything. Good stuff.
