Read a book written by an author from a literary family. A literary family for this task is defined two or more blood-related people within two generations who are published authors.

Please post any questions about this task here.

Kate S | 6459 comments I may need this one...

message 3: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1175 comments I know you said "blood-related" but please let me double check.
A member of a married couple without another tie mentioned below does not qualify?

And by two generations you mean siblings, parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles/aunts, great uncle/aunts, nieces/nephews, great nieces/nephews?

And published author can be any type of book/play/poetry?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Summer 2012 we had a similar task having to do with Father's Day. All of the authors for that task will work here, in addition to many others.

Here is the definition for that task and some suggestions:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

To help sort through all of that here is a list from Summer 2012 that may be easier to read.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Grandparents/grandchildren (and great uncles, etc.) do not qualify because that is 3 generations.

Married people do not qualify, only those related by blood.

Yes, any type of authorship, but if you are in the least hesitant, please post your "documentation."

message 6: by Beth (new)

Beth Robinson (bethrobinson) | 1175 comments Ok - parents, siblings, uncles/aunts and the reverse.

Thanks. It all depends on where you start counting from...

Elizabeth (Alaska) Beth wrote: "It all depends on where you start counting from..."

Yes, but 3 people are members of 3 generations. ;-)

Got 'em!

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3120 comments Oh sorry, is there a list I've missed somewhere?

message 11: by Bea (last edited Feb 19, 2016 02:33AM) (new)

Bea Here is an interesting list: related authors

Not all on the list qualify for this challenge, but I found it helpful.

Elizabeth posted it in message 4.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Tien wrote: "Oh sorry, is there a list I've missed somewhere?"

No apologies necessary! And keep posting. When I said "got 'em" I meant that I was adding them to our list for this task.

message 16: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3120 comments What if the book was an unfinished manuscript by the mother, Ariana Franklin, & finished by the daughter, Samantha Norman?

Winter Siege?

message 17: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3120 comments A collaborative work?

The Soldier's Curse by Meg Keneally & Tom Keneally (father & daughter)?

GR isn't updated yet so book link is to publisher's page. I'll update GR when I have more time on my hand :)

message 18: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3120 comments Another Aussie sisters:
Belinda Murrell ~writes children's
Kate Forsyth

Link about their relationship, bio

Elizabeth (Alaska) Got #18 - we'll be back to you about #16 & #17

Elizabeth (Alaska) For the Keneally's and Ariana Franklin, we want each of the related authors to have published independently of each other. If you can find such, we'd be happy to add these to the list for this task.

message 21: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3120 comments Ok, thanks, Elizabeth :)

message 22: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 19, 2016 05:16PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I did not expect this in the least.

Ian McEwan is the brother of Dave Sharp, author of Complete Surrender, the story of his surrender and adoption shortly after his birth and how he later found his brother who he did not know was a famous author.

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments Very interesting! It's always fun looking through all the neat tidbits people turn up with tasks like this :) I had no idea until going through the list that Max Brooks was Mel Brooks' son!

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5325 comments I discovered some sisters I didn't know about!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louise_...

Sherman Alexie recommends a short story collection by Lise Erdrich, Night Train!

Erdrich was born in Little Falls, Minnesota, the first of seven children to Ralph Erdrich, a German-American, and his wife Rita (née Gourneau), half French-American and half Ojibwe. Both parents taught at a boarding school in Wahpeton, North Dakota, set up by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and her maternal grandfather, Patrick Gourneau, served as tribal chairman for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians for many years.[7] While Erdrich was a child, her father paid her a nickel for every story she wrote. Her sister Heidi is a poet who also lives in Minnesota and publishes under the name Heid E. Erdrich.[8] Another sister, Lise Erdrich, has written children's books and collections of fiction and essays.

Joanna (walker) | 2335 comments Maybe too much of a reach:

The sister of W.B. Yeats

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabe...
Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method.

Rebekah (bekalynn) Tabitha King wife if Stephen and mother to Joe and Owen is a published author
I read Caretakers a few years ago and remember liking it. She has a couple of others with one word titles.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rebekah wrote: "A Density of Souls is a book by Christopher Rice. Both of his parents are published authors, Anne Rice and Stan Rice

Glad to add these.

I believe on the Grafton's you wanted Sue Grafton and C.W. Grafton

Also, fine on Tabitha King. I thought above that she is the wife and doesn't qualify, but (duh!) she's also the mother!

Thanks! Elizabeth. Middle of night when I made C.W. Grafton his own daughter!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Added Kathy Reichs and Kerry Reichs

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5325 comments Anne Hillerman is continuing the series written by her father, Tony Hillerman, and they are mysteries, too!

How convenient for this task! ;-)

I'll both Dick and Felix Francis to the list. While on Felix' page, I found this for him:

In 2007, after 17 years teaching physics ... should that be of interest for another task. ;-)

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1745 comments Rebecca Skloot's father is Floyd Skloot, who may also qualify for Narayan as it looks like he has published poetry, novels and non-fiction.

Elizabeth (Alaska) itpdx wrote: "Rebecca Skloot's father is Floyd Skloot, who may also qualify for Narayan as it looks like he has published poetry, novels and non-fiction."

Yes, to these for the Brontes, and Floyd for Narayan. Added.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Wallace Stegner father of Page Stegner

Wallace Stegner also fits 20.5 as an author of novels, short stories, and nonfiction; and fits 10.8 as a teacher.

I'll add him, Ed. I've been adding the less well known relatives, too, but I'm going to skip these. If any of choose to read the other Manns, please refer to this post and Thomas.

Lagullande | 1131 comments Not sure whether this is a sufficiently literary "published author" to count, but couldn't resist asking, and I kind of want to get the book now given the extract on the GR page......

Ben Bailey Smith (aka rapper Doc Brown and author of I am Bear) is the brother of Zadie Smith.
