Hi Lilyn and welcome,
Life is very cruel to you and I can only hope that it'll change, you'll have a much better streak, and your kid, ill now, will overcome the illness.
We'd be glad to offer a company and escape, beyond books, and maybe bloggers here would have an advice how to monetise book related activity, maybe as a beta-reader or a blogger.
Hope you'll enjoy !

Thanks for hosting me at your site and I'm glad to host you here-:)
Sounds like you've just had an unforgettable trip. We have some travellers here and share regularly tips an..."
Wow! This group is really active! I only popped out for a few days and now there are so many new people to say hi to!
Nik, it's not quite true that Australians can have such a long holiday, but it is true that we have long service leave. After ten years with the same company you accrue a month's long service leave and it continues to accrue thereafter. A few companies might grant pro rata long service after seven years but that is unusual. Thus, if you let your long service leave build up and take your usual annual holiday you might get three months leave.

Rita, thanks for bringing accurate info instead of the hearsay I brough back from a trip to DownUnder 15 years ago -:)
Yeah, it's usually kinda busy here on the group -:)

I am Geoff - all the way from South Africa. I am a former fund manager with an interest in technology. I left my corporate job at the end of Jan 2016 and am now exploring a few different gigs.
I love reading and writing - I write as a hobby and have self-published one book. I also blog a couple of times a week.
I look forward to some great discussions on the group.

With the record of ten years of corporate experience, fund management and the published book, I'm sure you'd fit right in with any section here, be it Wealth, Writing or World -:)
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute!

You are right about this site being busy! I often go a few days without coming on-line, and find myself a page or so out of date.
Welcome everyone, because otherwise it would be a long list. :-)

My name is Nihar Suthar and I'm a writer, but also a strategy consultant by day (so yes, I deal with finance and company management which is exciting!). I joined this group because I randomly got invited by someone...never heard of the group, but it seemed interesting, so why not give it a shot, right?
Looking forward to getting to know all of you :)

excellent, Geoff and Nihar! i just ran the new posts stats for our group for the 7-day period ending 9 October and noticed that our "Wealth & Economics" discussion folder lagged all the others. maybe you two would be interested in bolstering it. ;)

maybe our Comprehensive Author Resources spreadsheet--includes free promo sites--would be able to help you move out of that "pending" status ;)
Geoff and Nihar too, check out:

also, if you book has a promo, don't forget to announce it in the "Announcements & Book Promotions" folder.

interestingly, i just analyzed the stats for the period 2 October - 9 October and the number of new posts per day averaged around 100.

I'm Kent. From Canada, live in Indonesia, but am currently in Egypt for a few weeks to attend a couple of weddings. I've spent the last 11 years living abroad (Mongolia, India, Egypt, Azerbaijan, and Indonesia), and that is the inspiration for my writing. About six weeks ago, I self-published my first novel set in Mongolia. Already planning the second one, which will be set in India.
I'm the Chief Technology Officer of an Azerbaijani company by day (although I work remotely from Indonesia), and spend much of my free time reading, writing, cooking, and playing sports.
This definitely looks like an interesting group. Look forward to talking to you all!
Kent

Writing, strategy, management - all sound very compatible with the group's discussions.
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute!

Hi Melonie and welcome!
You sound like someone we want -:)
Which place on the list you want us to free for you? It shouldn't take too long -:)
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute a bit of passion, positiveness and persistence

No doubt, you've garnered a nice collection of places you lived in.
How did you manage to group a couple of weddings together?
Good luck with the recently published book and with more to come.
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute!

@Alex, I'll check that folder out and try to bulk it up a bit ;)

Thanks for the invite. Quite flattering when its free. My background... well, so far... soldier, designer, educator, writer, grave digger, labourer, gardener, quiz master... um probably a few more I've forgotten. Oh play alto sax with much more passion than skill.
Michael

With all the skills you have, we've got a lot of work for you here.
For example, just the other day, we were discussing setting up a graveyard on the Moon, where parachuting and grave digging can come handy -:) Also, we hardly miss any armed conflict.... ah, and there is also this writing section.
We'll probably soon hear Bill Clinton playing sax to his wife, whether a joyful or a sad tune, so maybe you can join in?
As you've probably deduced it's not always serious here.
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute!

Thanks for the invite. Quit..."
good that one your genres is romance as it seems we have a dearth of that kind of writer around here--in spite of the fact that i'd venture to say that many of us are romantics.

I'm Jon. I'm a huge fan of fantasy, sci-fi political and historical stories. I'm a classically trained chef of 11 years and unfortunately do most of my reading in audiobook form while driving. I would love to have more time to snuggle up with a real book more often. As if everyone here wished they had less free time. ;)
Thanks Alex for inviting me! I can't wait to get involved with this group.
Leer Es ... ( To Read Is ...)

Sci fi, history, politics and all are among our frequent dishes here. We are also proud to have a strong cooking department, often tempting us with something delicious. I guess now we'll be reinforced by a pro -:)
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute (maybe some small snack for the beers?-:))

Alex invited me to join, and the group looks interesting, although I'll probably have to stay out of the politics discussions.
It's probably lucky Jon can cook, because my kids like to say I time dinner with the smoke alarm. They all learned to cook young as a survival mechanism.
I'm a kiwi (New Zealander, not the fruit) but I've lived all over the world, Sweden on and off for the past 18 years. Switzerland, England, Scotland, Australia and the US (well, Alabama and Texas, if the US still admits to those) before and in between that.
I'm a writer sometimes, but not an author, I guess. I've written for magazines, newspapers, software manuals, and been published academically. (Re newspapers: I used to be one of those people who wrote those 4 lines "weird news" or filler pieces that newspapers get off the wire to fill up gaps in the pages. I'm not sure that counts as actual writing though :)
And I read. A lot. At least I do when I have time. And I write really long reviews sometimes.
Looking forward to meeting you all.

Looking forward to getting to know you as well Krazykiwi :)

You sound well travelled and with extensive international experience. We have a world to conquer in the relevant section, so I hope you feel comfy-:)
Not being an author, your writing might still be more read than that of many authors-:)
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute!

are you sure you can hold back? ;) but we're a pretty civil group anyways.
you can bring your psychology background to the table. ;)
btw, i made a post here in this group and referenced your post in the SF&F Book group:

food brings us all together. yesterday, my daughter's middle school had a UN Cultural Day.
"Dad, make something Japanese," she said.
Truth be told, I don't cook much Japanese food these days. Mostly because of time--I'd rather be writing than cooking. Throw six pounds of chuck into a slow cooker and the next day, you have a savory beef stew. On the other hand, social events sometimes demand a little finesse.
"Too much trouble. I'll bake an apple tart tatin," I said.
"Nooo... it stuck to the cast iron pan." She covered her face with her hands.
"Everyone still liked it."
"Sarah's dad had to get a chisel from the garage."
"Third time's a charm." I patted her on the head.

you mean another one, right? you already published The Girl called "Cyclops".
you should add it to our member bookshelf.
don't forget to check out our author resources spreadsheet. i just updated it w/several POD and self-publishing platform links as well as author tools.
if you put your current book on sale and when your new one is released, don't forget to announce it in our "Announcements & Book Promotions" folder.
nanowrimo 2016 is gearing up to start on 1 November. so if you need to get jump started on your new endeavor, join up! ;) see: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Ganbatte!

You can surely learn things here, can't vouch all of them good though -:)
Good luck with a new book! If it's something involving Yakuza, I might be among the first readers-:)
Hope you'll enjoy and contribute!

I am Briane from Australia! Full-time university student & part-time worker. Recently discovered my love for reading & here I am.
I read wide array of books from business/motivation/ psychology/ philosophy (non-fiction side) & fantasy/ magic/ adventure/ mystery/ crime (fiction side).
I initially loathed reading when I was young, but I as I got older I realised the value of knowledge and the unique experience each book contain. And I heard reading can improve writing & speaking skills , having English as my second language ;)!
I want to be able to write tonnes of blogs & articles someday! Looking forward to know & learn from you all!

Not sure I'm aware of specifics to offer an opinion here, but it's a theme worth looking into, so pls feel free to share some more details. There are certainly enough atrocious instances of exploitation, as for example, we read about workers dying in Qatar in big numbers at construction of stadiums for World Championship and it's certainly something that, if true, should stop and be dealt with immediately.
