I almost always prefer books to movies. The two Mouse movies were pretty low budget ones besides. Glad to see I'm not the only one in the group to have read at least one of these.

I just finished the fourth book in Fletcher DeLancey's 'Caphenon' series, 'Catalyst'. Binge-read the whole book yesterday as a matter of fact!I love that series....I may have become Fletcher's biggest fan!
about to finish The Valley of Fear after that probably read the last book of bel dame apocrypha or second book of Poseidon's children or after atlas.

It was good! I think I liked it better than the first.

Yes! Me too! Both are great, but Gemina just took it up another notch. It's so nice to see such great Space Opera for YA.
Finished The Caphenon
yesterday, and reading the sequel today. The sequel has a different flavor so far (25% in) with more politics to it. I gave the first one four stars.

Just finished Dragon Ship, #17 of the Liaden Universe, #4 of Theo Waitley. The Theo Waitley series are my favorites of the Liaden books, I believe. I sincerely hope there is another one coming. This one ended with too many threads hanging.
Gathering Edge will be out in May 2017 and that is mostly Theo I think. The other Liaden books after Dragon Ship are primarily about other characters.

Thank you. Something to look forward to.

Just finished
. Those books are a riot to read.Does anyone know of sci-fi series like those Kevin Hearne books or The Dresden Files? A series that doesn't take itself too serious, but is easy and fun to read?
I am about to finish The Lost Fleet Beyond the frontier series and loved it, I wouldn't mind suggestions for similar books please?
This:
Which I am enjoying immensely.
I just finished:
Which might be part of the best series by Butler.
Cody wrote: "I am about to finish The Lost Fleet Beyond the frontier series and loved it, I wouldn't mind suggestions for similar books please?"I'm currently reading Ninefox Gambit, which is pretty fun, but I recently finished a less renowned one, which is in par with the Lost Fleet series in many aspects (at least it looks like it is). It's called The Alliance and I thought it was absolutely brilliant. It's quite diverse, even for a sci-fi.
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a thrilling sci-fi with plenty of action scenes and drama to add colour, and plenty of conspiracies and plot twists to give it depth.
Cody wrote: "I am about to finish The Lost Fleet Beyond the frontier series and loved it, I wouldn't mind suggestions for similar books please?"You may have already read them, but the obvious answer is the Honor Harrington books by David Weber. The first book On Basilisk Station is available almost everywhere for free if you want the e-book.
https://www.amazon.com/Basilisk-Stati...
I'm currently reading Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (volume 3) and I must say that it has not let me down at all so far.
Rereading In our hands, the stars also published as The Daleth Effect. It's likely this is the first time I've reread it since the 70s. I remember reading it in Analog, and Wikipedia says that would have been 1969-1970. I distinctly remember reading it in library hardback later, on the neighbors sofa while babysitting until 2am.
Anyway, the main character discovers a handwavium space drive, and gets it installed in a submarine. So Denmark sends a submarine to the moon. A bit dated but not much, IMO.

That is brilliant thanks everyone, I have just looked on amazon and that seems to have kindle honor Harrington for free, as that seems the closest match I think I will start with that.I have also added the other to my want to read (a function I have only just discovered on goodreads, I am new :P )
Although if I enjoy the HH series and then add my malazan book of the fallen series in that will be at something like 40 books I think!! suffice it to say my year is sorted out :)

The Lost Fleet books are GREAT. I'll be on Frontier #3 soon.

"Since you like Scalzi's Old Man's War series, I would recommend Larry Niven's Known Space books, since those are the ones Scalzi is imitating. Start with Protector then move on to Ringworld and The Ringworld Engineers.
For fast-moving action and quite a bit of snark, try the Sten series by Allan Cole and Chris Bunch. After the first one, Sten, they basically use classic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and The Great Escape as templates for their stories.
I haven't read them but hear good things about the Hard Luck Hank series, which have titles like Screw The Galaxy and Suck My Cosmos.
The Lost Fleet books are GREAT. I'll be on Frontier #3 soon I mainly loved them :) I felt like I was reading a Michael Bay film.
I think I got through the first 9 in 2 - 3 months which is really fast for me (and also helped me dominate my goodreads challenge last year)
I started reading Honor Harrington, for a change, after beyond the stars but I will probably give it a miss. Judging by the way it s written. I am not sure I am its target audience. Luckily it was free on amazon.
I will probably coin flip now between the xenogensis or the alliance ones listed above as I cannot decide between them
Am reading "Whileaway" by T. Martin Woody. Man rescues an alien in a crashed spaceship and is given an unusual reward--turned into a 17-year old kid, ready willing and able to return to his high school to try his hand with the girls in a manner he never had the nerve to do in his former life. The whole story is funny and very, ahem, graphic.
I finished reading Falling in Death and Love by Magnus Stanke yesterday, and I've been listening to I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes
Finished the Four Pack before I crashed last night and started in on McCaffrey's MasterHarper of Pern.
I'm finishing the Lt. Leary (or RCN) series by David Drake (sorry it seems I can't include a link, I use the app, if someone knows the trick). I find it a good entertainment, a bit repetitive, but I like the characters. And sometimes, you know, you like to know that the heroes will save the day at the end, the interesting part is how.
I started reading the Ender's Game books this month! I'm almost finished with Speaker for the Dead. Love them!

Fortunately, I have the Kindle app on my Nook tablet.
I am always reading multiple books, I am currently reading
Shifting Reality by Patty Jensen which I got from the new Story Bundle https://storybundle.com/scifi which for people who like indie authors, I highly recommend checking out. The site is very neat! I am rereading
1984 by George Orwell which I haven't read since high school years ago and
Reishi Adept by David A Wells.
Suzy wrote: "I am always reading multiple books, I am currently reading

although sometimes instead of carrying on reading something particularly turgid (perhaps the middle book of a series i am enjoying), i might go and read a few chapters of something like the lion the witch and the wardrobe which i can run through, get my love of reading back and then carry on with the original book
this happened during the red book of Game of thrones (feast of crows maybe?) and the start of the next book, huge chunks of them were awful imo

BTW the second Honor Harrington book is also a free dl from the same site.
eARC of The Gathering Edge
by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. This is the latest in the Liaden Universe, and the official book will be out in May.

So I read a few books in parallel. Right now I'm electronically reading Nexus by Ramez Naam (not a space opera per se, but near future sci fi) while I wait for Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson to become available again through my local library. I just finished Abbadon's Gate in the Expanse series by James S. A. Corey, so I'm reading Harvest of Time by Alastair Reynolds (a Doctor Who novel) as a change of pace. I'm also reading Orfeo by Richard Powers for my book club (general fiction).

Reading the first part of Peter Hamilton's new 'void' trilogy - very good.
Also working through 'best of' AE Van Vogt short stories. Very dodgy, though I can understand why I loved him as a teenager. I'm now apprehensive as to whether I should re read 'The world of null A' in case my memory of an all time favourite is spoiled.

Abbadon's Gate is actually sci fi. All the books in the series have titles that seem to be connected to dark aspects of different myths though. The actual demons make no appearance in the story

I am also reading On Basilisk Station. The world-building exposition at the beginning is a little wordy and confusing but now I am getting on with the story I am enjoying it.

I might have a go then, I left it just after she got onto her battle cruiser that was refitted.
I could not get into it and it was free so I left it.
Currently back to the black company series though so wont be a while

after reading this one I went back and reread the others in the series.
Next up is The Mouse That Roared Boxed Set which is five novels. The Mouse on the Moon should count as space opera, although no aliens. I've read each of these several times before as library books, but it has been a long time. Two of the have movies with Peter Sellers. I'm looking forward to the humor. I know the books will be dated, but I hope they will still be funny.
