Just finished Shadow of Victory, the latest in David Weber's Honorverse. Still working on my review, but it was both enjoyable and very frustrating.

Not too long, so much as repetitive. Goes into great detail on events and plot threads already covered in previous books.

Yes, I am... I've also been reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
Just started The Twice and Future Caesar by R.M. Meluch.Long awaited sixth book in the "USS Merrimack" series.
I am reading ready player one and I like it... but i am also putting it down for days at a time. it's seems like less of a book, than a checklist of 80's trivia. the author seems more thrilled to show off his own geek cred than really tell a story. i'm trying to like it!

But I'm not holding my breath for the movie adaptation. All it would take is for one of the copyright holders of a piece of - as you say - 80s trivia/gamer culture to say "No", and the project is dead in the water.

They might have trouble with some things, but I think for the most part, they'll get the rights they need. It's got Spielberg and it's a best seller. I bet they'll get enough - maybe one or two hold outs, but it'll happen.
I really like this thread because I look at what you all are reading and then add more books to my want to read list.Since my September update, I think I have read 30 books. I thought Amazon's free kindle lend to prime members was only for October, so I grabbed some legal mysteries and science fiction books that i had wanted to "try out" but not enough interest for me to buy. It appears prime lending library is ongoing, so I can take my time with it in the future and not have to rush under a deadline.
Of note to me, meaning ones that impressed me and stuck with me were:
Autumn Kalquist's DefectiveDefective
Jim Morgan series by James Matlack Raney Jim Morgan and the King of Thieves (story telling and characters remind me of Rick Riordan)
Sarah Hoyt's new Darkship novel Through Fire not as good as the prior books in the series but still a decent read
and a Star Trek 50th anniversary trilogy, Prey Prey: Book Two: The Jackal's Trick, of which I just started on book 3.
After Prey, the latest Dune book is waiting for me Navigators of Dune. It is hardcover. Certain series or authors I want printed books. The problem is that it is getting more difficult to read the print size.
I read Angela White's Life After War series and still have books 7 and 8 to read. Not sure if I will get to them with the ho!idays and family visiting.
Enjoyed Confluence so much that I'm rereading the first two books of the series. I assume eventually there will be a fourth.
Rented All You Need is Kill audio book. Military sci fi with mechanized humans fighting aliens, so it might be an ok pick for this group someday.Ronnie wrote: "I read Cline's follow up novel Armada earlier this year and wasn't all that impressed."
I'm going to read it this month. I didn't really like Ready Player One for similar reasons to the other poster (too much of an 80s culture checklist; though I wanted more of a gamer focus; the 80s movies, while recognizable, weren't something I was that enthused about exploring in a virtual space). I felt some of the romantic stuff was a bit cringe inducing, and other aspects didn't get the attention to emotion they maybe should have.
Audiobook reader for Armada is the same as "What If", Will Wheaton I think, so things are already looking up. x)

You can rent audio books? Where?
Anyways, I Got a bunch of the 90's Shadowrun books, just finished the first book [book:Never Deal with a Dragon|351451]
This series seems like a good go to junk food series when I really wanna read something but I can't decide what.
Anyways, I'm taking today and tomorrow off and I'm gonna try to play through the NWN expansion: Shadows of the Undrentine.
MorteTorment(Unofficial World's Fastest Reader) wrote: "You can rent audio books? Where?"Maybe "borrowed" would be the better term I should use, but yeah, took them out of Hoopla and Axis 360 digital library apps. =)
One of the ones on the group reads up now was on Hoopla (The Quantum Thief).
Just finished reading A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. This is labeled as Wayfarers #2 and it is in the same universe as The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet but it does not involve any of the main characters of that book. Instead, it follows Lovelace's story after she leaves the Wayfarer ship, with a lot of backstory for Pepper. Very good book but not the same flavor as the first one at all.
Currently reading The Sculpted Ship and enjoying it. So far the ship still hasn't left the planet due to a missing part or two, but the main character is actively looking for the missing parts and wants to go back to space. In the meantime the ship is being used for cargo and passenger runs to various spots on the planet, because most of it is working.
I'm reading a horrible YA fantasy book called Falling Kingdoms. It's giving me road rage listening to the audio book.
Candy wrote: "I pulled up two books called Necrotech. I'm guessing you're talking the one by K.C. Alexander?? :)"*checkis*
Yep, and it's damn good stuff! Cyberpunk with emphasis on PUNK! :D
Anyways, I finished a book that's pretty damn good,
, and sadly dropped a book in my favorite series(that I'm currently reading.)
. Unfortunately the writer decided to be experimental with Zyra and turn a dark space opera blast into erotic fantasy....and it's fucking horrible. thanksfully I checked and found out that the rest of the series isn't like this. Whew!
Heather wrote: "I'm reading a horrible YA fantasy book called Falling Kingdoms. It's giving me road rage listening to the audio book."Oh dear! Time to stop listening?
Just finished listening to Carol Burnett's memoir about the comedy gold that was The Carol Burnett Show,
In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the SandboxThe audiobook is so good! It was narrated by Carol herself!
Just finished
pretty happy that I read a whole book for the first time in 80 minutes(236 pages, but still!), but I won't be continuing it as nothing stood out to me.I'm about to move onto
Kirsten *Don't Be A Grinch* wrote: "I've been reading

And I'm currently reading Swarm. It's really fucking good. Nice, dark space opera.
This is maddening! Let me post bookcovers goodreads!I got a nice little lesson with
. If a space opera has its space battles described to you via just descriptions of what happens, and there's no dialogue in it, I'm gonna glaze over.I'm moving onto
. Huge fan of the games, so I'm looking forward to this.
Reading
. Moon's books are the opposite of tension filled excitement, but her style of story telling is utterly fascinating. It easily keeps my attention.
I have reread all of that series. There's a new one due out in a few months.
ETA: Cold Welcome due out in April 2017.

I'm really enjoying it. Great space opera! Adventure, characters, yippee!
Currently rereading the treecat trilogy. Soooooo good. Does it count as space opera if all of the action is on a planet? A Beautiful Friendship by David Weber, backstory to the Honor Harrington series.
I am about to finish Star Wars Edge of Victory 2 RebirthRebirth (Edge of Victory, #2)With Rogue One out, I've been in a Star Wars mood this month. This is my second Star Wars book in December.
After nearly 25 years on my TBR pile, I finally started the first Mageworlds book The Price of the Stars. Much like Mass Effect, it's clearly riffing on Star Wars but going its own way. So far I'm quite enjoying it.
In the interest of sharing some hot tips - I was just on Amazon looking at their free ebooks. They have A LOT (way more than usual) of free ebooks today (12/25), lots of SF including Space Opera.
I'm reading The Magician King (The Magicians bk. 2) right now. Overall, I really like the series, but there is an incredible amount of sexism. Some of it is purposeful and there to be critiqued, but a lot of it just comes, I presume, unconsciously from the author. But still really great characters and interesting story. The last series I read before that was Remembrance of Earth's Past (The Three Body Problem)!
I recently finished
and enjoyed it quite a bit. Previously, I was reading his Revelation Space series which I quite enjoyed (till the ending). So I needed a change from Reynolds and decided to start
. I am enjoying it immensely and if I like it, I'll be moving on to Judas Unchanged then hopefully the Void Series. But I am really enjoying the change of pace from Reynolds.
I made it to within 50 pages of finishing
, but then just didn't really care how it ended. Now I'm onto
.
I just finished
, which can be certainly considered space opera. Now I have started
. SciFi, but I am not yet able to determine the subgenre.
I'm reading Lightless by ca higgins and it's really a plodder. It got great reviews by NYT and Kirkus, but it's just not very good. Wooden characters, nothing but talking, a universe that doesn't feel immersive. 102 pages in and each page feels like I am crawling up a mountain.
I just started The Riss Enemies: Book VI
. I have enjoyed reading the first five books so I assume this one will be good too. Space opera.

I'm currently reading The Maze Runner. Interesting so far, but am becoming annoyed by the overused colloquials the characters use.
