Once one has read any of the Russian epics which not only have huge casts but all their names are virtually identical, everything else is like Easy Mode. :p

Not that other cultures don't use nicknames but it does add to the problem.
Reading Past Imperfect #1 by DeLancey, a free sci-fi lesfic novel. It's basically Star Trek fanfic (heads up, I'm afraid I'm not a Trekie), but extremely well-written, and I've been able to read it with a bare minimum of knowledge of the franchise + wiki-consulting.
Not very far in it, but I definitely look forward to reading The Caphenon next
Home Run was fantastic! I’m about to start another just released book, the newest in the April series by Mackey Chandler. This one is
Been There, Done That.
Been There, Done That.
I'm in the middle of reading Pam Uphoff's Directorate series. Directorate School I've been finding some easy reading gems in Kindle Unlimited, which really helps my book budget :)
I enjoyed Been There, Done That but you probably need to have read the previous books in the April series first.
Then I reread Once a Hero by Elizabeth Moon and Ringworld by Larry Niven.
I’ll be rereading
Emergence by David R. Palmer next. It’s finally out as ebook!!! It’s been too many years since my last reread of that book. Not exactly space opera although there is a scene or three in space. I normally avoid post-apocalyptic stories these days, so I’m crossing my fingers that it’s going to be as good as my memories of it.

I’m not a fan of that author, but we have three of his books on this group’s bookshelf. I suggest that you read the comments on the three discussion threads.

Will wrote: "I keep meaning to dip into some Iain Banks. Any reccies on where to start?"The Wasp Factory is a classic and probalby my favourite of his non sci-fi books. The Bridge is also very good.
Finished my Tolkien Odyssey ;) so moving to new books... but nomen omen Nyn llyvary by C.A. Oliver has a lot of Tolkien inspirations Anyone has read this? so far only 2 books from the 6 that are planned are availlable but looks nice so far .
Emergence is still well worth rereading, although as I got into the book I started remembering key plot points, even after all those years since I had to stop reading paperbacks due to eye strain.
After that I switched to fantasy for a while but now I’m back in SF. Rereading
Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell, which is one of my comfort reads. I’ve probably read it at least a dozen times, sometimes more than once a year. Edit: looks like my latest reread was April of this year, and here it is not even six months later I’m rereading again....
There’s a new space opera due out in a couple of days that I’m hoping will be good:
Stars Uncharted by S.K. Dunstall.

I’m reading the first book in the SHADES OF MAGIC trilogy by V.E. Schwab, A Darker Shade of Magic. It’s surprisingly compelling and I’m not usually a fan of fantasy (prefer space opera).
I was not pleased with the free preview of Stars Uncharted, so I didn’t buy it. Disappointing....
I reread several fantasy books, nixed a bunch of free previews, and am now rereading
Half Share by Nathan Lowell.

I was taking a break from fiction and reading several nonfiction books. Then Teresa's mention of Half Share caught my attention. That whole series is one of my favorites, so I decided to relax a little today and started rereading it.
Betsy wrote: "I was taking a break from fiction and reading several nonfiction books. Then Teresa's mention of Half Share caught my attention. That whole series is one of my favorites, so I decide..."Thanks, I'd wondered if the series held up well. Good to know it does.
Thank to all of you, I started, get hook up and am about to finish the entire Liaden Universe !As a fan of Peter F. Hamilton, it's a bit frustrating not to have everything happening in the same time, in the same book.
That also why I choose to read it in the publication order. I really think it's best.
Chong wrote: "Space Deputy by Jenny Schwartz is probably the best SF I've finished in the last couple of weeks."Looks fun. Added to my ku tbr.
I enjoyed my reread of
Hellspark by Janet Kagan, and posted some comments about it on the BOTM thread.
Now I’m reading
Jatouche by S. H. Jucha, which was just released. It’s the third book of the series that starts with
Empaths. Multiple alien species from the first chapter of Jatouche - yay!

I am currently reading Last Man Out Last Man OutIt is the last in the series of Poor mans fight. Great fight scenes in space, and excellent writing.
Currently reading a Halo novel by Greg Bear, CRYPTUM. I started reading some Halo novels looking for something action-packed and pulpy, but the quality seems to vary, and the lack of deep characterizations kinda bugs me. Honestly, a nostalgic hankering for my youthful reading of Perry Rhodan led me to Halo. But the non-video game-focused novels in the Halo universe I've read so far--John Shirley's BROKEN CIRCLE and Bear's CRYPTUM, which I'm currently reading--seem a bit more satisfying.
I’m having trouble finding new books that catch my interest lately. Currently rereading
The Demon Breed by James H. Schmitz, which is in the omnibus
The Hub: Dangerous Territory. As I recall, that was one of the first hardbacks I ever bought, and came from the Science Fiction Book Club back in the 70s.
Edit: I did enjoy the new book I posted about last week, above.

Now rereading Star Rangers by Andre Norton, which also appeared as The Last Planet. Currently available in omnibus Star Soldiers with another story that I always skip. This was one of my favorite books when I was a teen. Reading it now the language is a bit stilted and from memory the only females are minor characters appearing later in the book.
So what are YOU reading right now? I need something good to read after I finish this one.

I've been listening to Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann
I'm on a fantasy kick with the Harry Potter series, currently on the last one Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
I just started The Calculating Stars (audio book) as well, and from what I've heard so far, this is going to ruin my sleep schedule! Really nice mature, grown up SF, from where I am, about 15% into the story.
Reading Greg Bear's CRYPTUM, a Halo novel. Satisfying so far, less bang-bang exploding gore than most of the other Halo novels I've read.
Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine. I really liked the first book in this series (The Great Library), so now I am starting the second book.
The Great Library books are pretty fun and have less YA teen romance angst than I feared. It’s a fun alternative reality...
I just finished
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal. Alternate history set in the 1950s. Well written and I cared about the main character, however it was a very uncomfortable read. I remember the 60s, and the treatment of women and minorities kept making me either upset or angry. I won’t be rereading that one.

I just started reading A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny and I've been listening to Leverage in Death by J.D. Robb
I’m in the midst of rereading the Highroad trilogy, which starts with
A Passage of Stars by Kate Elliott. This is just the second time I’m reading it and it has been long enough that I had forgotten most of the details. Hopefully by the time I finish the third book I’ll have found something else interesting to read.

I've started reading my way through Tanya Huff science fiction and paranormal fantasy. Finished the Keeper Chronicles with #3
Long Hot Summoning. Good, slightly off-beat fantasy, probably best read in order. Interesting world and character building. There are two stories lines and two sets of characters in two locations. Though cultural references are Canadian they were easy enough to follow. I liked this more than expected. Wasn't too sure about book featuring the 17 year old sister but it was no more YA than the first two books. This would be an interesting world for some short stories but I don't think there are any.

I have read that trilogy, and enjoy rereading the first book Summon the Keeper. There is at least one short story that is buried in an anthology, probably He Said, Sidhe Said & Other Tales

Thanks. I was hoping someone might know of something since she's done short stories from some of her other series.
I enjoyed my reread of the Highroad trilogy. Book three was particularly interesting.
Since it hasn’t gotten a second, I’ve started my reread of
Mirabile by Janet Kagan. I love that book....

Just started Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach which has been on my maybe list for years. I haven't decided yet whether I like it, but I haven't given up.
I am currently reading: Home Run (Smuggler's Tales From the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper Book 3) by Nathan Lowell (author)

An excellent book!
An excellent book!
I’ve been rereading books lately, possibly just too grumpy to enjoy new books. Currently rereading the
April series by Mackey Chandler.
April series by Mackey Chandler.
I just started reading The Woman in the Water by Charles Finch - a historical mystery set in Victorian England - and started listening to Dauntless by Jack Campbell - love how disgusted he is at the state of military protocol and how (of course) the Marines haven't forgotten the "old ways"
I am reading The Invincible by The Invincible. It is a sci-fi mystery and a page turner. It has been a while since i read something that i cannot put away.
