This might have been asked before, but I can't find it. How can I find the word amount for books?

:)
If it doesn't have your book, your captain can post in the captains group to confirm if the book can count for the challenge

You can google the avg number of words per page or pages per words, that should help

message 104: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't get what you mean by searching for an average number per page.

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 1572 comments Schuylar wrote: "I don't get what you mean by searching for an average number per page."

if you know how many pages you can get an estimate of words on each page.

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

Arbookfind brings me to a page to select if I'm a student, parent, teacher, or librarian.

I also don't think an estimate is helpful.

message 107: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments That's the one

message 108: by [deleted user] (new)

What do I select if I'm none of those?

When I used that site I just chose student.

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Hi,

I'm one of the co captains of team Happy Feet. I just tried to update the spreadsheet but it's only giving me view, not edit. Is it only the captains who can edit or am I doing something wrong?

message 111: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments You just need to request access through the option in the sheet, or PM me your email address (that you use to access Google sheets)

message 112: by Alison (new)

Alison (a1ison74) | 1050 comments Thanks Karen. I've pressed the request access button.

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 1572 comments Can we count character names, and story locations from anthologies?

message 114: by Ora (new)

Ora (oeamis) So for location on where a book is set, does it have to be the actual name or can it be a nickname if it is referred that way in the book.

In the premise it states, "reigning over Vegas without complication." Can I use that for a V location?

I haven't started the book yet, so I don't know if it is just Vegas or Las Vegas throughout the book.

message 115: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Karen - Hopefully these haven't been asked before, but...

For location, is it just the city, state, country or are locations such as "Snowberry Manor" or maybe a specific lake or mountain name counted?

Also, for characters that are listed a little differently, for example "Old Nick" or Dr. so and so, would the old or Dr count?

Finally, for author names with initials instead of names, such as P. J. Tracy, would the P count as the initial for the first name?

And do middle names count?

Sorry for the long list, but these have all come up within the last couple of days.

When it is a known location like that I would say no ; as we know they are referring to Las Vegas.

It needs to be the main setting for the book. So if the book is set in "Snowberry Manor" then that is ok. Whereas if that is just the name of the house, but not the main setting (which may be the city of London, for example) then I wouldn't count it

Also, for characters that are listed a little differently, for example "Old Nick" or Dr. so and so, would the old or Dr count?
I don't count titles like Ms/Mr/Miss/Dr etc. If the person is only known as "Old Nick" then I would count that as his nickname.

Yes

And do middle names count?
no

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments is there ANY way that I could still take part? maybe if someone wants out?

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Christina wrote: "is there ANY way that I could still take part? maybe if someone wants out?"

It is possible. I'm checking the progress of the teams over the next few days. If there is a team behind in their expected books read you may be able to fit in. Just complete the sign up form and we will contact you if we find a spot!

Reply I could use her on my team, I'm having health issues so I'm WAY behind on reading!

Kristie | 5928 comments We also have a missing player. I think maybe one of the teams that is further behind could use an addition too.

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 1572 comments I do also have one person who's only at 18% for their books and they're supposed to be our biggest reader

message 127: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments No worries. I'm sure Karen will look at the numbers and come up with a fair placement.

As a team, you are at 33% which is higher than a few teams at the moment, so you probably won't get a new member quite yet

Catherine | 128 comments For the March mini challenge...how do we determine the questions/point to cover?

Avid Reader and Geek Girl (avidreaderandgeekgirl) | 1572 comments Catherine wrote: "For the March mini challenge...how do we determine the questions/point to cover?"

try to do at least 1 of the points on each team besides your own

message 132: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Karen - You've probably answered this somewhere already and I apologize for making you repeat yourself, but if multiple locations are listed for a book, do they all count for location? For example, when people are traveling in a book and spend time in each location? The current book I'm trying to place (The Mark of Athena) has the setting listed as:
Oakland Hills, California (United States)
Salt Lake, Utah (United States)
Atlanta, Georgia (United States)
Rome (Italy)
Kansas (United States)
Charleston, South Carolina (United States)

Ap..for example...if someone read Jane Eyre (which takes place in Victorian England) i could find another book that takes place in the same time period in England?

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hey Kristie ; with the locations we try and just use the main setting. If your characters are running all over the USA it may be hard to have a city as the "main" setting, so in that case you'd probably just consider USA as the setting

Christina (chrissy__) | 1241 comments can I already ask though - will my books that I started in MARCH but before I got into a team also count?

and (sorry if this has been asked before) would e.g. 1984 count for 1 (or 4) since it does actually have the numbers in the title? even though it's a number as a whole? if that makes sense - I don't know.

one more thing - if I happen to read a book in German, would its German title or the original/English title count?

Then you get to relax
;)
That's why the estimates of how much you read is so important when signing up. We try and get the teams as even as possible, but if a few people on a team start reading well above their estimates it does mean you will finish the month faster than we would normally anticipate
