What about if it's a von, van, etc?
I use my library to work out the alphabetisation for any two word surnames. Most surnames that are van (e.g van dyke) are alphabetised as v

No, for anthologies use the person credited as the "editor"

Are books in other languages than English allowed? I'm a native German and although I read most my books in English, I also tend to have some German books as well. Usually books that were originally German or Finnish/Northern European because I tend to read in the original language or the only language I understand a book had been translated to (which happens a lot with Finnish literature for me). Couldn't find anything on that so far so I thought I'd ask, because I will put some books future to the back of my shelves of they're not allowed.
Yes you can. Just shelve the edition you are reading :)
How do I know which team I'm in after I sign up? I keep getting alert from all teams so I'm afraid I'll miss the message that will let me know which team I'll be on :(

Ok..so I'm usually between 5-8 per month....all are >100....>300 even.

Thanks Mods. ☺"I'm going to say no for the majority of non fiction books, (it opens the doors to books that have a zillion royals listed for example), unless of course the non fiction book is something like "Eat Pray Love" which is told like a novel with limited characters. I hope that makes sense!!

Goodreads makes sending individual messages quite difficult. As it limits the number of messages we can send AND we need to do the whole "I'm not a robot" business which makes it very time consuming. For that reason, I generally don't PM people unless they are missing in action and the captains haven't had any luck in getting in touch :)

Maybe to keep things simple and not need a ruling for each book, let's say that for biographies the person who the biography is about can count a a 'character'.

It's just I might read the The Autobiography of Malcolm X- so he's obviously the main subject.

Yes, if you have a word count and it is on GR that is ok
Karen - How do you place books, such as 1356, when it is part of a series, but not numbered? Is it considered a standalone related to the series?
Yes, I just go with the Goodreads entries, so if it doesn't have a series name/number on GR then I'd consider it a stand-alone
Are animals with names allowed to be used as characters? I will be reading An African Love Story: Love, Life and Elephants with several named animals.
Animals are ok if they play a central role to the story (not just a dog called spot)
Our team captain for Team Cars hasn't checked in yet. I've kinda been filling in, but I don't have access to update the team spreadsheet (which I think would tremendously help my team keep track of our progress, there have been questions). I don't mind being changed to a co-captain (or captain if ours doesn't ever check in). What should we do? Thanks :)

I have a Google account but not a Google email. When I go into the spreadsheet I can only see view mode and it says I need to request edit access. I did this yesterday. My email address starts with "lori". I've sent a new request through.

Ok that one is coming to me as a "drive shares" Google email address. Can you email me the email address you use to access google drive --edit-- done!
