Doesn't have to be sci-fi or fantasy - what was the best book you read in 2015?

Got to be Words of Radiance for me!
Closely followed by Foundation.

Such a tough call. Wise Mans Fear or Way of Kings or Red Rising or A Darker Shade of Magic or Providence of Fire or Knights Shadow .
Non sff I think it was An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris for me

Kimonawhim (thebooksmademedoit) Definately a difficult one, I read quite a few gems this year in my tiny collection of 2015 books.. but if I -really- have to pick, it would be A Monster Calls ... Or Uprooted.. xD I really can't decide! xD

YES A monster calls! I've leant my copy to more people than I can remember. Easily one of the best books I've ever read. Though I'm still not ready to read it again.

Kimonawhim (thebooksmademedoit) It's only been in my possession briefly, but it's already being passed around my circle of friends and family ;P I know exactly what you mean. I'll re-read it one day, but not yet! I think I'll have it be my final decision of Best Read in 2015; it had so much impact.

Susie (susiend104) | 265 comments I had seven 5-star books in 2015, but only five were really novels. I'm generally pretty particular about what I'm willing to rate that highly; it's been a great year of reading. I'd say that my very favorite would be The Islanders, but it's almost a tie with Slaughterhouse-Five.

For me it was definitely Miles Cameron's The Dread Wyrm. I love those really complex series and it is such an interesting mix of historical fiction elements and unique fantasy aspects.

Mpauli I have The Fell Sword on my shelf to read this year which will likely lead to the Dread Wyrm as well. I read the Red Knight and highly enjoyed it.

I had great year of reading this year with many high scoring books. For sci-fi Red Rising and Morning Star took it, I read so much great fantasy this year but Brian Stavelys books ranked high. Favourite Fantasy though was the first 3 books of John Gwynne's Faithful and the Fallen series (Malice, Valor, & Ruin)

For a non-SFF book it would be The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or Stephen King's The Stand.

Hard to choose just one for each category because of such a great year!

I really enjoyed Tigana it was one of my favorite reads of the year, but my favorite would have to be Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees. I'm not usually a big fan of non fiction but that book made me very emotional.

Andreas | 106 comments I was more on the SF side: Aurora did it for me, but also Children of Time.

My favorites were The Martian and Insomnia and, because I'm a physical sciences nerd, Molecules: The Elements and the Architecture of Everything.

I almost said The Martian as well, even though it was my best read of 2014 I re-read it twice this past year and loved it.

Melanie | 1690 comments Legion, Ender's Game, and The Impossible Knife of Memory (not sff but I loved it).

message 16: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) I don't know if I can pick just one book. 2015 was my year of Malazan and it blew my mind. That whole series ties for my favorite read of the year.

message 17: by imyril (new)

imyril is not really here any more My favourite was Station Eleven - I have a big soft spot for apocalypse fiction, and I loved the connections between the characters and the rose-tinted long view back on our modern day lives - it's not often you get a sense of regret for what's lost (so many apocalypse novels just focus on surviving the collapse).

I think we had that as one of our monthly reads.

message 19: by imyril (new)

imyril is not really here any more I might have to fish out the thread. I know some people found it a bit slow and bloodless, but that was exactly why I liked it.

It wasn't quite my cup of tea but the writing was brilliant

message 21: by Bana AZ (new)

Bana AZ (anabana_a) This topic looks interesting. I'll be adding to my TBR from this thread.

I can't choose one so my top three are:
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (non sff)
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The Young Elites by Marie Lu

message 22: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Davis (bonafidewb) | 75 comments Flowers for Algernon and The Moon is a harsh mistress were my faves from last year.I did read quite a few Malazan novels last year, that would be third favorite ,rating the whole series not a particular book.

Currently read the final book in Brian Staveley's Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne trilogy. The first two (as a pair) were in my top 5 of 2015 and so far the last mortal bond has been great. If it keeps at the quality of the first third I believe it will be the best of the three.
