It's long enough that I doubt even Paul could read it on his lunch break!

They are all fairly short Jan.

message 312: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments I'm plodding along through The Luck of the Vails which I got from the library because I so loved EF Benson's Lucia books. However in this book, written much earlier, he keeps building tension and creating a feeling of trepidation only for it to be resolved two pages later.

message 314: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer DuBose (jenndubose) Right now, I'm reading The Monuments Men and The Monstrumologist.

The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, And The Greatest Treasure Hunt In History is on my TBR too Jennifer. Let me know what you think of it.

Sue (nzsue) Blowback

Have just started this, it is the 5th Enzo Files book by Peter May. The first four have been very good, so hoping for another good read.

message 317: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer DuBose (jenndubose) Paul, so far it is outstanding. The author has a way of making non-fiction read like fiction.

message 318: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Going to start Midwives by Chris Bohjalian later tonight.

Lucky I checked what I'd typed before hitting "post" as the title had come up as Mudwives! That sounds like a whole different book :)

message 319: by Annette (new)

14 books and a prequel. I've been wanting to read them for a while, so I said this would be the year I do it

As their is a reservation on it, next to read is Under the Tump: Sketches of Real Life on the Welsh Borders

message 326: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments This will be the first book I've read by him. I actually was going to read Ordinary Thunderstorms but then realised that was a follow on from Restless. I don't like reading books out of order really so grabbed a copy of Restless off eBay :)

message 327: by Wendy (new)

Wendy I've recently finished Brazzaville Beach my first William Boyd after several years of nagging from my Boyd obsessed other half, I really enjoyed it, hate it when he's right!

I'll try and get him into a monthly read, Paul! I am sure Jo would be my wingman on this.

Reading What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Murakami. Quite an unusual read, a sort of memoir with added exercise.

So far he has described himself as a 'mediocre runner' despite the fact that he had done 23 marathons – at least one a year. Feeling a bit inadequate with my measly 5ks!

I decided I must try William Boyd as so many of you rate him highly. The only one the library had was An Ice-Cream War so I'll be starting that soon.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments Recently finished Doughnut by Tom Holt and last week I started The Outsorcerer's Apprentice also by Tom Holt...some light relief from Infinite Jest

message 338: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Have recently started two - The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey not sure what to make of this at the moment but going to stick with it. Also Harry Potter and the Cursed Child far more ridiculously excited than a 43 year old should be when this came through my letterbox yesterday! Couldn't wait to finish the Snow Child before I started it!

I liked the snow child very much (thought the wintery and other-worldly atmosphere created was wonderful) but I wasn't quite satisfied with the ending. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

I have to say The Snow Child is really growing on me now, I wasn't sure at first but it is getting slowly more addictive. Your are right about the atmosphere of the book Joy the cold and beauty comes right off the pages. Will let you know what I think of the ending!

On my bedside table (so reading a few pages before crashing out and will take ages to finish) is Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys. the autobio of Viv Albertine from punk band The Slits. I've seen this book recommended everywhere and it fits with the 'Music' in the BV challenge. She writes really well.

Going on holiday on Saturday with just my Kindle so am musing about what to read next.

I loved The Snow Child, it is a lovely take on a classic tale and as you say, so atmospheric. I hope you continue to enjoy it!

Jackie | 380 comments I really enjoyed The Snow Child too!

Starting The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff today.

message 345: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Oooooh The Danish Girl - that's one I meant to put on the never ending to read pile ages ago - must read it before seeing the film!!

message 346: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Just finished The Danish Girl, Wendy. Thought it was quite good, bit slow at times for me though.

Starting Finders Keepers by Belinda Bauer today. The final book in the Exmoor trilogy.

I've just finished Finders Keepers. Unfortunately I somehow missed the middle book of the trilogy but actually this one works fine as a stand alone. A good thriller.
