Currently Reading? Just Finished? 2016
I am going to start
by
James Lee Burke.I had skipped this book in the series because it was showing as unavailable at my library. I was returning another book when I saw this on the shelf and of course I had to check it out. I keep saying that I need to get to the other books on my TBR shelf but I can't come back from the library empty handed and James Lee Burke is just too good. It's like potato chips. Once you have one you have to keep eating them.
I checked out
too so I guess I am on a JLB binge.
I've just finished The Automatic Detective. Think of it as The Maltese Falcon staring Rock'em Sock'em Robot. Here is my review.
Finished with How to Be Single by Liz Tuccillo, i gave 3 ☆ for it. Now, starting reading Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday

You can't go wrong with James Lee Burke. :)
Finished The Disappearance of Signora Giulia, by Piero Chiara and in the middle of Eltonsbrody, a rather creepy novel set in Barbados. There is nothing like being away from home and having hotel balcony time for reading. Aaahhhh.
I finished Robert B. Parker's Kickback
by Ace Atkins.Ace Atkins does a good job with his continuation of the Spenser series. In this book Boston PI Spenser takes a case involving private juvenile jails. Plenty of corruption to be exposed. I enjoyed the book. 3 stars.

I read An Appointment with Murder a few months ago and gave it 4 stars. Books 1,2 and 3 in the series are on sale for $.99 today at Amazon. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Tad wrote: "I'm reading Razor Girl
by Carl Hiaasen which is a blast so far!"I just saw him talk about the book today. If the book is as funny as he is you are in for a great read. I actually remember news reports about the incident that he described in the first scene. I guess you really can't make this $#!+ up.
Just finished a preview copy of a PI/detective mystery set in Ireland. It's not listed until the official publication day (tomorrow), so here's a sneak preview of A CHASER ON THE ROCKS by Simon Maltman.A new murder-mystery set in Belfast and beyond explores the landscape and wartime history of the area, alongside the architecture and inhabitants of the city. It also casts a chilling eye upon the contemporary realities of coping with disintegrating mental health, of medicating against mania, of social isolation and exclusion, of ratcheting fear and paranoia in the most mundane, everyday situations.
Simon Maltman’s debut novel, A Chaser On The Rocks, is an ambitious tale of intrigue which contains two mirror-image plots, one historical thread in WW2 and one in the present day. In these different time-zones we follow a pair of private detectives into the murky worlds of espionage, drug dealing, blackmail and murder. Based in the real-world backstreets of Belfast, their investigations end up overlapping in an extraordinary fashion.
After reading ‘A Chaser’, I gave Simon a good old-fashioned interrogation about the background to his multiple stories. If you're interested, here's where the convo went:

John, are you listening to the audiobook of The Woman in Cabin 10? The narration by Imogen Church is excellent. I hope to post a review of the book soon.
Just finished Stasi Child
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and I got the chance to interview the author!

I'm expecting Vol. 1 of Collected Millar: The Master At Her Zenith: Vanish in an Instant; Wives and Lovers; Beast in View; An Air That Kills; The Listening Walls today . Once I start it I'll have to read all five novels that are in this book.
I think I'll be ready to read it in November

That is awesome. I hope you enjoy them all.
Am reading signal for vengeance by Edward Marston a new novel in the railway detective series which is awesome btw.
Finished A Reason To Kill (Rina Martin #1) by Jane A Adams. This author is new to me and I really like her writing.. a very good British mystery. I look forward to reading more of this series. (It started slow but ended with a bang !)
Autumn is starting to make itself felt outside which makes it the perfect time to start rereading Harvest Home: A Novel. I read this about 45 years ago and absolutely loved it. It has remained high on my list of favorite horror novels ever since. Hopefully it will stand the test of time and be as good as I remember it.
I finished Broken Promise
by Linwood Barclay.A woman with a baby that isn't hers, dead squirrels hung on a fence, mannequins riding a defunct ferris wheel, and college girls being attacked...there's a lot going on in this book. Linwood Barclay always writes a good story. 3.5 stars.

A couple of days ago I finished Preacher, Volume 5: Dixie Fried. Now I'm reading Career of Evil, a new book in the Cormoran Strike series. This one is more dark of the first, but in line with the previous. There is an abundance of descriptive parts, that make the pace a little slow. Till now, is interesting.
Finished Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday. I gave 4 star. Nice one. Now i am reading The Free State of Jones: Mississippi's Longest Civil War by Victoria E. Bynum, it's a history book, a bit boring, but a bit make me gasping too.
Just Finished: The Face of Death The Face of Death (Smoky Barrett #2) by Cody McFadyen Starting: Freak Freak (Creep #2) by Jennifer Hillier
Barbara, I read your review of Broken Promise. It has been on my TBR shelf. Now after ready your review, now is the time. Thx
Just finished Robert Dugoni's The 7th Canon
, which is a standalone, but it would make a great introduction for a series (hint, hint, Mr. Dugoni!)My review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Now I've started Saving Babe Ruth
, which starts slowly...the reviews I've looked at say that it gets better, so I'm sticking with it for now...

I finished Star Trek Memories
by William Shatner. A very entertaining and interesting overview of the making of the original Star Trek television series. If you're a fan, you'd like it. 4.5 stars.

I am just starting the woman in cabin 10 after trying In a Dark, Dark Wood a few weeks ago. That one was not the best as the twist was disappointing so I hope this one is better.
As for other reads I have just finished All the Little Pieces which sadly I did not enjoy at all but out of recent reads I would recommend The Widow or Room.
John wrote: "Just over halfway through The Woman in Cabin 10 which is proving suspenseful."I'm just starting it this evening so I am hoping its good!
John wrote: "I found the story didn't really get going until Lo was actually on the ship, so hang in there!"thank you, have you tried in a dark, dark wood? Sadly that was a let down so I am hoping this next one will be better.
Cassie wrote: "Just Finished: The Face of Death The Face of Death (Smoky Barrett #2) by Cody McFadyen Starting: Freak Freak (Creep #2) by Jennifer Hillier"
Cassie I loved the Face of Death. I love the whole series and cant wait to read The Truth Factory which is his newest and comes out Sept.27th.

Yes, and I bailed on that one with its horrible characters. Glad I gave the author a second chance.

I usually try to read 2 or 3 to give an author a chance as sometimes there can be just one terrible book by them.
AH and John:I have already downloaded the audiobook of In a Dark, Dark Wood, so it will be interesting to see what I think of it.
Everyone's taste is different, but Ruth Ware's writing style in The Woman in Cabin 10 just really worked for me.
I loathed the characters in Dark Wood; the only satisfying ending for me would have been to have locked them in that house, and then set fire to it!As for Cabin 10, I thought Lo was fine, although some readers disliked her. Her bf seemed a bit besotted perhaps, but that was okay. I felt we were supposed to find the others on the ship a bit much on purpose, but they never bothered me like in the other book.
