Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments I finished The Forgetting Time, and rated it 3 stars, but it's actually 2.5 stars. It wasn't what I thought it would be. When I realized it was about the reincarnation topic, I thought in DNF, mostly because I was disappointing the book wasn't what I was expecting, but I decided to give it a try, since it was labeled as a mystery too. The writing is average, and the mystery is almost nonexistent.

I'll start today The Summer Guest

Oh. Sorry Sandra, you didn't enjoy your book much

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments Thank you, Mariab. It's a risk worth to take. :)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Dragonfly in Amber last night. It was so good! However, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book so I gave it 4.5 stars. Here is my short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting The Little Stranger for the monthly challenge.

message 1105: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have abandoned The Little Stranger. I gave it a good go but it was so slow and the characters were all really unlikeable so after 130 odd pages, I decided to call it a day. It's a shame as I normally really enjoy Sarah Waters' books.

I am going to read Before I Go to Sleep for the monthly challenge instead. I'm not entirely sure it will fit but fingers crossed.

Oh no! I love reincarnation stuff and this is on my summer reading list! I'm still going to give it a try but I'm disappointed to hear you didn't like it so much. :(

The Little Stranger was my first Sarah Waters books and while I really enjoyed it I think the ones that followed I enjoyed more. I did really love TLS though!

I'm wondering if I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it first. I was really looking forward to reading it so I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't like it. Which is your favourite book of hers? Mine is Fingersmith.

Give it a try, Tasha. I've seen many people loved it. The main problem for me was that in my mind this book something absolutely different from what it actually was. I don't know why. Maybe I didn't read the blurb, or I'm mixing it with another book.
As I said the writing is average, and it is not a mystery, even some people says it is. Do not expect a mystery, so you won't be disappointed. But if you like reincarnation stuff, then you will probably enjoy it, since it is the main, and nearly only, them. She brings many issues related with the topic.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and gave it 5 stars. I'm on a roll. :)

Next up on audiobook is The Death of Dulgath. I hope I can finish it before the toppler begins.

message 1111: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I'm reading another Jane Marple mystery, A Murder Is Announced. This one came out around 1950, so much later in Miss Marple's career than the group read Miss Marple. I'm enjoying it very much. We are seeing more of Miss Marple this time around, as she visits a friend in Little Chipping.

message 1112: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Lisa, looking back at my ratings for Sarah Waters books, it looks like Affinity and The Paying Guests ae my two favs. I haved loved all of them though giving only 4 and 5 stars out!

message 1113: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sandra, I will try that one, it's on my summer list. I'll let you know how I feel about it later this summer!

I loved Affinity too. It's my second favourite after Fingersmith. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed The Paying Guests. I think that is the one I will pick up next. I also need to read The Night Watch. I have loved all of her books so far apart from The Little Stranger.

message 1115: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished The City of Mirrors yesterday. It's another 5 stars! It's shaping up to be a banner year for 5 star reads!

I also started Destined for an Early Grave. It should be a quick enough read that I can finish it before the toppler starts.

message 1116: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Lisa, I think The Night Watch was actually my least favorite of her books.

message 1117: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm reading The Dogs of Christmas by W. Bruce Cameron. Sorry can't link since I'm on the app.
It is so cute! Josh, the MC, is forced to take in his neighbor's dog while he supposedly has to go on a last minute trip, and the neighbor doesn't realize the dog is pregnant. I'm shaking my head at this point. The story gets sad but starts to lift up after a bit.

I thought the story line sounds interesting. If I come across a copy, I will probably read it, but not go out of my way to buy it.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments What did you not like about it Lisa? I never heard of the book but many of my gr friends have read it and most gave it 4 or 5 stars.

I'm bored! But I don't want to start a book for half an hour now when I have to put it away for a week after.

message 1126: by Delitealex (new)

Delitealex | 336 comments Just finished Monstrous Regiment (Discworld, #31) by Terry Pratchett I'm really enjoying the Discworld series.

I'm listening to Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older loving it so far especially the descriptions of New York.

Peggy, I found it quite boring and unfortunately, I guessed the main 'twist' when I was less than 25% of the way through. That took all the suspense out of it for me. I really wanted to like it but it just wasn't for me.

I am not tempted to read them, exactly, but I love the names of some of the titles. :)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I just finished Scarlet Pimpernal. It was a reread. I had forgotten I reasd this one. I am most the way through The Masked Truth.

I am selecting my books on the basis of size. My RA makess the bigger books too hard to read.

I MISS MY KINDLE. The all caps was a mistake that I decided to leave because it really says what I mean. Kindle is great when you have arthritis. Not so good when you leave it at a Starbucks

Were you able to finish it? I see your tweet that says you were trying to get it done before the toppler. I'd do the Instagram thing too, but it's hard to take a pretty picture of an audiobook download.

Are you enjoying it Gavin - I have not read that one but A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens , and The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens are two of my favorites.

message 1142: by Joan (last edited Jun 21, 2016 12:51PM) (new)

Joan I just finished After the Storm (Kate Burkholder #7) by Linda Castillo ; I will be continuing with this mystery series.
The action takes place in and around an Amish/Mennonite community in Ohio. The main characters are a woman police chief and the man she lives with who is also a policeman. The author writes well and draws the reader in with credible action, deft dialogue and suspense.

Cherie, I just listened to that as an audio book - I enjoyed it and the development of Miss Marple's character. I had a hard time keeping the characters straight however.

message 1146: by Joan (last edited Jun 22, 2016 03:41PM) (new)

Joan I am reading The Doctor: A Novel and it's off to a very bad start. The first chapter is written from the perspective of a child in the 19th century but the observations and language read more like the thoughts of a modern, 50 year-old! Cloying and insipid, I hope it gets better because the story line is intriguing.

message 1147: by Cherie (last edited Jun 22, 2016 05:11PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Kristie wrote: "How are you liking it, Cherie? I think I'd like to read more about Miss Marple."

I am on chapter 10, page 85 of my 192 page old paperback book and Miss Marple has really only been in one scene so far. A little over 100 pages to go, so I hope there is more from her. Inspector Slack, Colonel Melchett, and Superintendant Harper are doing all of the interviews and having all of the action so far. Absolutely no one likeable that I can see.

There is a large cast of characters, as Joan says, and it is really hard to keep up with who they are. At least there is a Cast of Characters list at the beginning of the book that I can refer to.

I had a good laugh a couple of pages back when Christie shamelessly plugged herself along with Dorothy Sayers, Dickson Carr and H. C. Baily as writers of detective stories. I am going to have to look them up and see if I have read any of their books. The only name I recognized was Sayers.

Joan - I'm probably too late but the China Bayles series is set in Texas and she has an herb shop next to a tea room. Perhaps that's the one you were looking for? https://www.goodreads.com/series/4094...
