The other mostly ignores what I'm doing unless I have a bookmark with a tassel and then she'll come over every once in a while and bat at it or try and take it out of the book.
It can get annoying but they are so cute it's hard to get truly mad.

They like to "help" me read (the older ones) by rubbing vigorously on the bookcover corners and sitting between me and the book. But never any damage at all.

My Blood hound "ate" my Games of Thrones hardback..sigh..

My cats"love"on my books..just a little slobber over all the happiness!!

My dad's dog, on the other hand, destroyed a book I had put in the kitchen for my mom to read... Now, all my books stay in my room, and the dog stays out of it.

I've got three cats, and two in particular act similar to Darwin's cats. the third one couldn't care less, but I've caught him sleeping on top of the bookcase every now and again. the smaller ones love to get in my way when I'm trying to read; I've learned not to lie down and read, otherwise they take that as an invitation to use the book as a pillow. One of them also likes to chew on tasseled bookmarks and makes a game out of trying to steal paper bookmarks from between the pages.

I know what you mean, Kiera. I so want a cat, but I can't afford one, especially if I want to keep buying books. Maybe one day I'll be able to adopt one.

Yes, my animals can be disasters for the books. The worst is a house bunny, Kirby, who is cage free. But he is restricted to one room around the house (not books.) We've had disasters in the past for sure though.
My cat, Malz, who is hyper and agressively playful, has also randomly lunged on an unsuspecting book and started chewing the cover.
The outdoor cat, Corn, lays on top of the books sometimes if they are on the table in the kitchen, but doesn't hurt them at least. :)

There's definitely something about a person laying there trying to read and relax that catches a cat's attention! Mine likes to lay almost on my face/upper chest when I'm laying there trying to read.

I have two dogs when one of them was a puppy she seemed very jealous of me reading and would make her talking noises, sit up shaking her paws, bumping my feet, anything to get my attention. I would put the book down and she would go lay down. They have never damaged my books. That same dog was jealous of this laptop when I first got it.

When I put up and filled my new bookshelves, she was lying on the floor in front of one afterwards. I think she knows that Mommy loves the books so she's drawing comfort from them too lol. :)

Our hokkaido likes sleeping with an open book as a pillow.

Books, curtains, camera buttons, wires, pencils, vaseline...
Yeah, we've got rats too!
