I don't have any pets myself, but reading another thread got me wondering, from those of you who do have pets, what pets do you have and do you ever find they and your books and bookcases have, shall we say, "interesting" interactions? Do you ever have trouble with your pets causing damage? How do you deal with it? Or do your pets get along just fine with your books and/or bookcases? Do they work out nicely as living bookends or do they get in your way trying to be living bookmarks? I'm curious as a cat. ;-)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Have two cats and they don't do any damage to my books or shelves but they can definitely make reading interesting. One of them loves to lay right on the page I'm reading if I have my book laying on the bed and be a living bookmark (great phrase, stealing it.)

The other mostly ignores what I'm doing unless I have a bookmark with a tassel and then she'll come over every once in a while and bat at it or try and take it out of the book.

It can get annoying but they are so cute it's hard to get truly mad.

K | 286 comments I have two dogs (a bullmastiff & a Great Dane x Bull Arab), a budgie and two male guinea pigs. I am currently, slowly, setting up a fish tank for Siamese fighters and a few corydora fish. My dream is to live on a hobby farm and have lots and lots of animals. None of my pets really have access to my books. Sometimes my dogs sniff them to see what they are and if they are edible, but that's about it.

K | 286 comments I also really want a couple of cats, four pet rats, and I want to move to a state that will let me have a rabbit again and also ferrets.

Lee Whitney (boobearcat) | 99 comments My cats like to read withme(or nap) I should say. he Siamese loves to "love" the books. The Persian has a little problem with no nose so he sniffs and sneezes.

message 6: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) I had a cat, who died last year, who liked to chew on book corners. Now, I still have to keep my books away from my current cats because they like like to stretch their claws on them or lay on them; or as my cat Sparrow has done *gasp* urinate on them :O

Sally What a great topic! I have three cats now but have had up to five at a time. My cat Boo chomped down on A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America. This was the only book she ever munched on.

K | 286 comments @Sally. Hmmmm... Do you think she may have thought that this was her own personal menu? Hahaha

MissJessie | 37 comments I have four cats (2 older males and 2 females, mom and kitten).

They like to "help" me read (the older ones) by rubbing vigorously on the bookcover corners and sitting between me and the book. But never any damage at all.

France (kittyk4att) | 54 comments I have a cat and like most cats, she shows interest in books mostly when I'm reading them, though she likes sleeping on them as well (sometimes she lies on well-aligned paperbacks, sometimes she uses books on my bed as a pillow). She doesn't damage anything, so we're cool =)

My dad's dog, on the other hand, destroyed a book I had put in the kitchen for my mom to read... Now, all my books stay in my room, and the dog stays out of it.

I've got three cats, and two in particular act similar to Darwin's cats. the third one couldn't care less, but I've caught him sleeping on top of the bookcase every now and again. the smaller ones love to get in my way when I'm trying to read; I've learned not to lie down and read, otherwise they take that as an invitation to use the book as a pillow. One of them also likes to chew on tasseled bookmarks and makes a game out of trying to steal paper bookmarks from between the pages.

I know what you mean, Kiera. I so want a cat, but I can't afford one, especially if I want to keep buying books. Maybe one day I'll be able to adopt one.

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I have two dogs and two hundred tropical fish. None of them seem to take the slightest interest in my books. In fact the only interaction with them is when my dogs worm their way in front of the book to say that it is time for a walk; the fish don’t give them a second look. I sometimes suspect that they are all illiterate.

Lin | 266 comments I have a cat and a dog. The cat is interested in my books, myNook and my iPad. She likes to lay on them. It is like she thinks she is holding them down for me. The dog will jump in my lap and try to pull my hands away from what ever I am reading. Like she is jealous of my attention.

Hilary Evans (hilevans83) | 29 comments My cat tries to take books off the shelf with his paw. He normally goes for ones off the most recent shelf I got a book from...almost like he's trying to bring me one. It never works...

Yes, my animals can be disasters for the books. The worst is a house bunny, Kirby, who is cage free. But he is restricted to one room around the house (not books.) We've had disasters in the past for sure though.

My cat, Malz, who is hyper and agressively playful, has also randomly lunged on an unsuspecting book and started chewing the cover.

The outdoor cat, Corn, lays on top of the books sometimes if they are on the table in the kitchen, but doesn't hurt them at least. :)

There's definitely something about a person laying there trying to read and relax that catches a cat's attention! Mine likes to lay almost on my face/upper chest when I'm laying there trying to read.

message 24: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie My smallest cat, Emmylou, likes to do this digging maneuver -- seems to be a way to get rid of her excited energy, and one of her favorite things to do this to is any book that happens to be sitting on the couch. Thankfully she tends to do this with her claws sheathed, otherwise there would be problems.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I have two dogs when one of them was a puppy she seemed very jealous of me reading and would make her talking noises, sit up shaking her paws, bumping my feet, anything to get my attention. I would put the book down and she would go lay down. They have never damaged my books. That same dog was jealous of this laptop when I first got it.

message 26: by Jana (new)

Jana (janablaha) | 28 comments My dog stepped on the open page of my yoga book today but thankfully she didn't leave a paw print. And this is because for some reason she gets really excited when I unfurl the yoga mat; I think it is because she knows I'm getting down to her level on the floor :p. She often sits on me during various parts of the practice, so today I think she just missed and stepped on the book instead. Cute.

When I put up and filled my new bookshelves, she was lying on the floor in front of one afterwards. I think she knows that Mommy loves the books so she's drawing comfort from them too lol. :)

Louise | 280 comments When our dachshund was a puppy, she chewed the edges off a couple of library books (maybe they had an interesting taste?) that was a little expensive - but the librarians were good humoured about it :-)

Our hokkaido likes sleeping with an open book as a pillow.

message 28: by Jamie (last edited May 05, 2014 06:12AM) (new)

Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) My cat likes to get behind books on the bookshelf (like when the bookshelf is 12" deep but you've got a row of shallow paperbacks pulled forward to the front edge so that there's several inches of space behind them). It's one of his favorite hang-outs. Sometimes he accidentally pushes those books out, but so far there's been no lasting damage.

message 29: by Batsap (new)

Batsap | 117 comments Aww, what a cute topic :) I feel kind of jealous of the people who's pets don't eat their books... I have a couple of rats who live in my room which is where my books live. When they have free-ranging time during the day they just love to climb all over the bookshelves and sample the literature. =/ I stop them when I catch them at it, but they're getting quite sneaky. Luckily they haven't -completely- destroyed anything yet. I guess I should be pleased they love books as much as I do? Even if we show our love in very different ways... :)

Books, curtains, camera buttons, wires, pencils, vaseline...

Yeah, we've got rats too!

Moloch | 9 comments We have a cat that mostly ignores me and on the contrary a dog that loves me very much (and I love him too!!!!!!), and when I read and don't pay attention to him he thinks it's time to jump on me and lick me for cuddle :-) I have to do quite the gimmicks to "save" the book in my hand!

message 32: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 418 comments My dog used to lie on the bed with me while I read at night. She knew when I put the book down it meant she had to get into her own bed.

message 33: by Milliebot (new)

Milliebot (milliebot_reads) In our old apartment it was easy for the cat to get to the top of my bookcase and she used to lay down on top of all the books I had up there. Now that we've moved it's hard for her to access so I think she's forgotten about it. She's not very cuddly, so no issues with her sleeping on my books while I'm trying to read them, but I do use ribbon bookmarks and if I don't tuck them under the book when I'm not reading it she chews them to pieces!
