Book club met last night and we discussed "The Thirteenth Tale." 7 of the 15 members were present. Only 1 person didn't like the book, had a hard time getting through the book.

Lively discussions on twins, mirrors, ghosts, Jane Eyre and the Gothic era.

Everyone agreed the book was confusing. We were trying to figure out which twin did this and which twin did that. I had found a review online by Veronica Heley 2008 - a 3-page review - and she states the book was confusing.

Leaving us all still wondering. So much so we thought of contacting the author and posing some questions to her.

I will reread this book one day and see if the 2nd time round more information is revealed to my mind. Ha!

I can't remember the details about The Thirteenth Tale since I read it a while ago. So I can't respond about it. I only know that I enjoyed reading it.

And Joy, I was the opposite as I didn't like the story nor did the members of my book club although we weren't sorry we had read it. I wouldn't read it again however and still say the old lady twin was the main character not the other way around.

Book club selection for this month is:

"The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier Clay" by Michael Chabon. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

Very small print and 678 pages long. Oh my goodness. Will definitely have to read during the daytime. Print too small to read in bed plus the awkwardness of holding a big book lying down.

Linda, that is when a Kindle comes in handy. You can adjust the size of the print and it's so easy to hold. And bookstores aren't going out of business because of it. Just heard that small bookstores are booming. Really? Just a suggestion. I do use both/sometimes library books so like using a Micro/just because I have one doesn't mean I never use the oven.

Cowboys and Gangsters: Stories of an Untamed Southwest by Samuel K Dolan is a nonfiction account of the early 1900s along the Mexican border from Texas to Arizona. It mostly documents the crazy period of Prohibition. The old meeting the new, cowboys chasing bootleggers with cars, lots of shooting, & other violence, but all told in a factual way through newspaper accounts & reports. Quite interesting. I gave it a 4 star review here:

Jim, does sound very interesting. Not usually my style which is why I will add this on my To Read list to continue to broaden my reading scope.

I do love those type of movies, though (as long as the bloody parts aren't too extreme).

What am I reading? Maybe this should say what am I supposed to be reading ... for the book selection of the month.

I keep looking at the cover, than the size of typeface, then the thickness of the book and I have no interest in reading "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier Clay."

Saw a dreadful movie last night based on the book of the same name, "The Dressmaker." I kept thinking it can't get worse but it did.

I read the review you posted on The Dressmaker and can't imagine anything hilarious about this movie. Mostly, depressing with just a few light scenes. Mean spirited townsfolk, sadistic husband, mean child bully, crazy police chief abused wife, death of the one decent male actor and the main female character acts OK but ends by burning down the town. Not my kind of entertainment.

I wrote the review on the movie "The Dressmaker." In the beginning of the movie my husband and I were laughing at all the craziness of the town. We weren't crazy about the ending but that's not unusual. Since a child I rewrote endings I didn't like.

Joy, it wasn't your review of the movie, "The Dressmaker" that I read it was jn the list of reviews by other readers that I read. Linda, I didn't mind the ending as such/I just thought "good riddance." But I didn't like the main male actor dying in a pile of straw.

The Joiner and Cabinet Maker: His Work and Its Principles is an updated edition of an early 1800s book about apprenticing to the trade. The original text was published anonymously & was extremely readable, but Christopher Schwarz & Joel Moskowitz brought it to life with a lot of historical background. They even made the projects described in it. Fantastic. I gave it a 5 star review here:

I've never read anything or even heard of Wallace Stegner. I will check this one out too.

I saw this today. Really interesting & sad. Basically, one of the founding mothers of the children's section in US libraries went out of her mind & tried to get Stuart Little by E.B. White banned. Unbelievable. It's pretty long, but well worth reading.

Jim, My daughter is about your age and Stuart Little was one of her favorite books as a child. I can't think of one thing wrong with it. Crazy people.

I just read Forrest Gump & it was pretty good. Similar in overall theme to the movie, which I liked better, but well worth reading. The book sagged badly in the middle, so I only gave it a 4 star review here:

Movie was great. Haven't even thought of reading the book.
4 star is worth a read.

Case and the Dreamer and Other Stories by Theodore Sturgeon are 3 longish short stories that are all good, but the middle one "If All Men Were Brothers, Would You Let One Marry Your Sister?" probably made a bigger impression on me than any other story I've ever read. I gave it a 5 star review here:
