Allison (inconceivably) The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

Who all has read this? It could arguably be considered proper for a young adult book, since the main character Kvothe, is telling the story of his life as a child in this first book of a trilogy.

I LOVE this book...its second only to HP.

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Allison, I keep staring at this book on my shelf. I think I am definatly going to start it after my Stephanie Plum obsession passes.

I would probably have to do a happy dance.

You'll love it!

Misty | 1505 comments I've been wanting to read this, just because I love the title. Then a friend read it and raved, so that added a real reason to read it. I'll work my way around eventually.

JG (Introverted Reader) I'll recommend it too. I was so disappointed when I found out that I have to wait for the second book to come out!

I think he submitted his draft to the editor..so hopefully it'll only be a few more months! I can't wait.

Allison (inconceivably) The author's blog that can be found at patrickrothfuss.com is HILARIOUS too, for everyone that is a fan of the book. I totally love that guy. He is a GR author as well.

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'm currently listening to this one on audio. It's really good, but bloody long!

Vicki I think I've seen Allison mention this in a couple of groups. I've put it on my TBR and its most likely going to be in my next book purchase. Can't wait!

Allison (inconceivably) lol yeah...I'm slightly obsessive about pushing it on everyone I meet ;)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments It's really good, you should definaely read it next.

Allison, I obsessively read his blog! His feed is on my iGoogle homepage, LOL.

Allison (inconceivably) I know April! He is HILARIOUS. I even spent a long time one day reading past entries...man. I want to meet him.

Vicki I just ordered it from Amazon. I hope to start on it next week. I am looking forward to it!

Susan | 12 comments I LOVED this book. I have recommended it to everyone who enjoys that kind of genre and I can't wait for the next one!

Thanks for the link to his blog!

Allison (inconceivably) hope you enjoy it Susan! Whenever I find myself having downtime I always go back and read his older entries.

woohoo!

Vicki It finally arrived today... I must admit, I haven't been very patient!

Vicki I am sooooo excited for you to read it! Keep me updated.

Misty | 1505 comments I just picked this up from the library. The size is daunting for the amount of time I have right now, and it definitely has to wait until I am done with Catching Fire, but I am excited.

Dawn | 6 comments it's an amazing read :)

don't worry. You'll read it super fast :)

Misty | 1505 comments Allison, have I told you yet that I love this? I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this. I didn't like the first 50 or so pages (the frame set up), but ohmygod, once it got into the story, I was hooked. And there's no set date for #2!!! What!?!

Allison (inconceivably) ahh...I almost forgot to update this thread! Just FYI for everyone...the sequel, The Wise Man's Fear, is set to release March 1, 2011!!

man. I should check this group more often :P little behind in here. We've talked about it since you posted this, but I still have to say that I'm thrilled you loved it :D

I agree about the beginning being slow...it might have taken me even longer then 50 pages to get into it.

Misty | 1505 comments Whatever page begins the actual story, not the frame -- that's when I got into it.
You wouldn't think that we could be devoted to a book that takes 50-75 pages to get into...

Allison (inconceivably) I know, normally I get rid of them. Don't know what it is about this one that made me stick with it, but it paid off :)

Misty | 1505 comments I think it was you and someone (JG?) talking it up that made me stick with it. And the teaser in the jacket flap. I kept waiting to get to that.

☼Bookish in Virginia☼ (ren_t) The Wise Man's Fear (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 2) is due out in March of 2011. A lovely 932 pages.

message 29: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) My son was a student of the author, and highly recommended this to me. I don't like fantasy, and I don't like huge books, but I'm about 1/2 thru and totally impressed. I love that it isn't an adult quest (I read The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again and that was enough of that). Instead it is, at least so far, about his youth. I fear the sequel might get more into the fantasy tropes and I'll lose interest. But maybe not, because the world-building is amazing, with all the folklore and geography and history etc., and more of that would be even better.

Well, in any case, I better finish this first one before I say more.

Does anyone know if it's to be a trilogy, or a series of indeterminate length, or... ?

I think it's due out on my birthday!!!

Michele | 19 comments I love this book and its sequel. I don't think it's really a YA book, but that doesn't mean a teen can't read it and enjoy it.

Steph | 4 comments I just discovered this author, and finished the 1st and 2nd books within 2 weeks. I am dying for "Day 3" to be released! I run a Teen Reading Group and am having them read this in the coming weeks. They are HUGE fantasy fans, and it has been a challenge finding books which don't have too much "stuff" (our code word for adult themes), but also books that are satisfying to read and that generate discussions. I am hoping this book will leave a mark on them; the use of language is what hooked me immediately and I think they will also be able to recognize the difference between this level of writing and other books that we have read of lesser quality. The storytelling throughout the series is amazing. I feel that my teens will enjoy this more than our revisiting of Tolkien last summer.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 70 comments I've got the book and may start it next. I am shamelessly pushing A Discovery of Witches so I know what it is to finish an incredible story and want everyone else to read it! It's another one that is not YA but not unsuitable for teens to read.

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 14 comments Love, love, love, love, love A Discovery of Witches!

I'm hoping The Name of the Wind is available in audio, in which case it will be added to my Christmas wishlist.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 70 comments I would buy the audio because I quit reading after really struggling with The Name of the Wind - I might do better with the audio. It has to be on CD though so I can listen when driving.

message 36: by Krista (new) - added it

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 14 comments Did a little research and found both an audio CD version of The Name of the Wind as well as the option to download to MP3. Guess what's going on my Christmas list!

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 70 comments Where did you find the audio CD? I haven't looked so just being lazy.

message 38: by Krista (new) - added it

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 14 comments If I read correctly, it's available through Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Name-Wind-KingK...

There is nothing wrong with having some lazy. I'm a fan of it myself. :o)

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 70 comments I saw that but it looks like it is a MP3 audio and I can't play that in my vehicle. It's kind of confusing the way it is written.

message 40: by Krista (new) - added it

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 14 comments Thank you for clarifying. Does that mean it would need to be loaded to a software like iTunes or an iPod to play? Not that it has to be an Apple device, but you get what I'm asking, right?

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 70 comments I don't understand any of the technicalities but I know my vehicle will only play regular CD's. I don't have an iPod nor any way to use one when driving which is when I listen to audiobooks. Thus I can't download them nor use the MP3 CD's.

I've been doing the same thing! I loved Discovery of Witches, and have read it twice already. Dying for the sequel to come out.

And put me in the Name of the Wind camp -- that is one incredible book. I was amazed by it.
