What is Dystopian Science Fiction?

Dystopian Science Fiction can be summed up as the opposite of Utopia—imperfect societies in the near-future. In actuality, Dystopian Sci Fi stories often include Utopian elements like deep social control. These measures of control are taken to the extreme in Dystopian Sci Fi. Often, Dystopian stories deal with political issues like police states and repression. The value of Dystopian Sci Fi is not that it predicts what will happen, but what we fear will happen and investigates whether these fears are valid or destructive in of themselves.

Anthem by Ayn Rand, because I've never read anything of hers.

The third book in The 100 series or the second one in the Starbound trilogy. There's also Legend by Marie Lu, The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, An Ember in Ashes by Sabba Tahir and lots of others. Dystopian has been growing a lot lately so there's plenty to choose from.

I read for about two years Dystopias. I kind of got burned out on them....so, I too, will lurk. Maybe something will strike my fancy. If not...then, I will just choose Tier 1, and skip it.

This will be a tough one for me because I'm not really a fan of Dystopias. That said, I'm going to try Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut and see how it goes.

May I suggest Ready Player One by Ellis Cline. I just finished it on Audible - might be my last book of 2015. The book was read by Wil Wheaton. I am suggesting it to everyone. It's a very interesting take on this topic.

Oh, I keep hearing about Ready Player One on Booktube. Thanks for the reminder. Maybe I'll try it. Hmmm....

For those who don't like dystopia, try The Healer. It's a very good crime novel set in a dystopian future, where a man is searching for his missing wife. It's less focused on the dystopia aspects, though they affect his search, and the type of dystopia (a world where global warming has gone wild, crime is rampant, etc) is a more "realistic" type, less fantastical. I loved it.

Oh, and for those who do like dystopia, the best dystopian book I've ever read (and I've read a ton, I adore the genre!) is The Unit, closely followed by Never Let Me Go.

I'm reading Ready Player One for a reddit reading challenge right now and it fits perfectly with this topic.

I have also considered The Maze Runner, with the pressure to watch the movie and all, but I think I will go for the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, although some bloggers I follow have disputed that this is truly within the dystopian genre. I think I am not going to be so nitpicking and go for it anyway.

Anyone who has not yet been introduced to The Hunger Games trilogy, I would definitely recommend those. They are awesome and excellent entertainment value for your money

I'll keep recommending Swedish classics :) Karin Boye's Kallocain is a must-read. I hold it up among the dystopia classics like 1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451. It's really good.

I read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline for this category. Dystopian Science Fiction is not one of normal reads but after having enjoyed this book so much I will be looking for more! I would have picked this if it was available on Kindle. So I will continue to lurk / look...

From what I found on Google just now, you should be able to find it as an ebook. Maybe not to buy on Kindle, but you can always convert to Kindle's format yourself.

I've just read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. An interesting book - futuristic, but still woven with current issues and items. It was strange reading about the future while the characters ate ravioli in a tin and played DVDs. It's the first of a 3 book series. I'm looking forward to reading the others!

I read 'The girl with all the gifts' by M.R. Carey for this, it was definitely a page turner. It could also fit as 'becoming a movie this year'.
