I'll Give You the Sun
question
top 10 books i read in 2015

10)The selection series- a series that i just tore through as soon as i started reading-i couldnt get enough! my only gripe is that the traditional YA cliches last waaaaaay too long. too long to rectify that love triangle. too long for the competition to end- too long to give the mean girl humanity.( i certainly enjoyed the ride. why would it be on my top 10 if i didnt) glad i read it- i just wish it hadnt ended so abruptly.
9)The unearthly series- i borrowed the series from my friend and really enjoyed the ride. i had been craving YA that involved angels as part of the paranormal element. exactly what i needed- i just tore through these. id say i liked the last book most-just because it had the most angels in it.
8)Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. cute. cute. cute. cute. yay queer representation among people of color! yay for showing real diverse family dynamics! yay for teenagers written like teenagers act in real life! yaaaaaay for character development of our narrator. no wonder it won so many awards! completely deserved!
7)Paper Towns. its john green. do i need to say more? i didnt think so.
6)Ill give you the sun. this book really surprised me with just how real everything was. it doesnt sugarcoat when things hurt nor does it feel grim and sad. not to mention the way Noah narrates is a real inspiration- creative people know what i mean- you read, watch or listen to something and you just get hungry to create. to write or paint or sing or dance. that what this book did to me and i think there arent many greater feelings
5)To All the Boys I've Loved Before- some of these books on my list took me by surprise by how good they are. this is one of them. as someone who has 2 sisters, the dynamic of the sisters in this book is spot-on. also i was captivated by how much chemistry these made-up people had. again, yay for POC representation. read it.
4)The book thief- another one of those honest-to-God inspirational books. its a modern classic, of course its great. please teach this in schools! DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE. for the love of God, respect this story enough to listen to the audiobook if you have to. dont watch the movie it just doesnt work.
3)The f- it list is a book about a girl whose best friend is diagnosed with cancer... i related to this main character to say the least. another book that doesnt sugar-coat things. the treatment takes a long time and it makes the best friend look and feel gross. advisory: if you cant handle explicit sexual content or the use of strong language, you shouldnt read this. but for me, it spoke to me.
2)Amy and Roger's Epic Detour made me feel like i was in the car with the titular characters on their epic road trip across america. talk about chemistry- wowza! i aso like how it showed how much we like to deny the bad stuff that happens and that running away from our problems isnt helpful. i did not want this book to end. but when it did, i felt very satisfied.
before we hit #1, lets hear it out for some honorable mentions!
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight was short and sweet and suuuuper cuuuute!
me and earl and the dying girl was full of laughs and sattire of other stories that involve illness. my biggest problem was that i refuse to accept how it ended because of my personal connection to a girl who was dying for a length of time and this book made me imagine MY friend making the decision that the girl in this book made and i dont accept that.
you should read it tho.
(drumroll)
1) i read about Beauty Queens by Libba Bray on tumblr, on there, users lauded the book for its representation(i agree) and its sattire of society (couldnt agree more- some parts are just TOO REAL) and its great writing and characters(also agreed) i cant say enough things to praise this feminist masterpiece!
