Cynthia, for the addiction task, many are asking -- can the addiction be non-drug or liquor related? Such as shopoholics, biblioholic, chocoholic, gambling...a type of addiction that brings out some measure of disaster?

Yes, "...In the Title, or That Features..." please.
Tanja wrote: "Janice -> Dune work for your task? It is a major theme. (asking for someone) HEE!"Dune is based on a prophecy, so yes, that will work.

Thanks William!
For task 15.6, would lacemaking be considered an art? Do I have to make lace or can I make other art?Cait - Would 'road' be considered a place or a thing? It's not part of a proper street name.
Bridgit wrote: "Cait - would a book that has a place like "Redemption Falls" or "Lake Wobegon" count as a proper name for a place? "Those are both ok.
Rachel wrote: "Cait, can I use the word "moon" for the third book? I was thinking of it as an object, but I guess it is a place, too (even if we can't go there)."I'm going to go ahead and say that moon, sun, and star are all ok for the third part of the task.
I'm not gonna say the name of the book, but what if a character spends most of the book as a foster kid and then at the end is finally adopted? Would that count for the adoption task?
I have a question for the third part of Cindy's task (1-2-3 task). For the third book (title with 3 words) would Possession: A Romance count as three words? Or should I not count the subtitle? Any advice?

Thanks Cindy! Great task by the way. It's really helping me use books in my already-owned TBR stacks! :)
Cindy and Cait I love your challenges! Gives me a chance to read some of the books I really want to read on my TBR!! Thanks :)

Awesome, thanks Cait! Great task, btw!

Hi Cait,
I was going to use Bridge over the River Kwai for part three of your task (the object), until I read your response to William's "house" inquiry. Do you think "bridge" is the type of object that could also be considered a place?
If it doesn't work, I'll just use it for part 2, as River Kwai would be a proper place noun.
Thanks.
Cait wrote: "Katie, bridge is ok for a thing (a river is a thing too). So you're doubly covered. :o)"Great. Thanks, Cait.
Thanks Bonnie, Angela, and Rachel! That's what I was hoping to do with my task, especially since it's 3 books. Make it broad enough to give one plenty of options already on their TBR list, but specific enough to narrow it down and have the fun of still having to search a bit. :o)
15.8I haven't seen the letter "K" discussed here (but perhaps I missed it). I abhor military history, and so I was wondering--would books about a region be acceptable? Say a book about the Middle East that has something to do with Kuwait, or perhaps a book about the transitioning states of the former USSR (Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan)?

Kirsten - what about Korea? I'm sure there's something out there about Korea you might be able to use :)

Kenya probably has a wide range of books set in it also.

Check out message 13 in the Geography Lessons thread under help. Big list of K-country books.

If you like historical fiction, The Red Queen by Margaret Drabble mostly takes place in 18th century Korea. The modern part of the story wasn't so interesting, but the bulk of the book is the older story, and it was pretty good.
Cait- are you counting Heaven and Hell as places? Just wondering!great task! Mine might be more narrow. Unless I change my mind between now and the finish line.
Something I have always wondered- when you guys update your task lists how do you get them to update in every post (maybe I hallucinated that?) Or do you just go back to your plan and edit it to reflect changes and new challenges? Thanks!
I do mine on a spread sheet, so it's always updated. And then I post it to the Your Writing thing. I also only post the current task, and only post the whole list when I'm completely done. I figure that saves space on the list and I don't have to keep checking to make sure I've got everything. And that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
I keep a Google Doc spreadsheet. When I post a finished task, I remark on which task, then add the link for the spreadsheet, and add my total points. Short and about 5-8 lines :)On the word challenge, if GR adds extras to it does that count? Cause the book itself is only 2 words but GR adds the series name to the main book title.
Nicole wrote: "Cait- are you counting Heaven and Hell as places? Just wondering!great task! Mine might be more narrow. Unless I change my mind between now and the finish line."
Good old Wikipedia says that Heaven and Hell are proper nouns, so they would qualify for the second part of the task (place).
Kirsten wrote: "And I feel sheepish now."Don't feel bad. There are a bazillion posts in this group now and it's hard to sort through them all.
Another randomly dumb question. In the last challenge everything was all in one link and so people would post their lists and other people would notice if there were books listed that did not fit the task. I am super paranoid about these darn challenges and don't want to have a book that won't count. I find myself asking obvious questions and driving myself (and everyone else nuts). Is there anyone who could double check my list when and if i am ever done with it? Thanks for humoring me.lol
Kirsten wrote: "I didn't even think about that, since I'm so used to "North" and "South". I'll take a look!"Totally random story, but I lived in South Korea during my senior year of high school, and one time, I was playing Scattergories with some Korean people... The letter was S, and one of the categories was "countries", and I couldn't think of anything else, so I put "South Korea" as my answer. My answer didn't end up counting, because the other players voted against me! They don't call their country South Korea. They mostly just call it Korea (Han-guk).
I know...I find myself thinking dumb things like "Is a diary a thing?" and I am an English teacher, for heaven's sake! Well...I must go continue my power reading. I have 17 books picked out for the next challenge, a task in mind- now I need to finish my 7 books and be done with this Summer Challenge!
Angela wrote: "I feel the same as you Nicole. I would hate to read a book that I later find out does not qualify! "Me, too. Especially since I just found one on my list that didn't fit the rules...oops. Maybe we could check each other's.
Nicole wrote: "I know...I find myself thinking dumb things like "Is a diary a thing?" and I am an English teacher, for heaven's sake! Well...I must go continue my power reading. I have 17 books picked out for the..."Go, Go Nicole - soo close - great job !!!
I was wondering with all the links being posted, is there some where on this group they could be saved to, so everyone could access them as needed?
Can I get a clarification on 25.6? Does the leader only need be elected democratically? Or does the leader also need to die in office? The way the task is written it does not state that the leader has to die in office, other than the seven Presidents listed.Thank you.
William wrote: "Can I get a clarification on 25.6? Does the leader only need be elected democratically? Or does the leader also need to die in office? If you go over to the BJ Rose's task thread (http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...), messages #7, #9, and #21 are especially helpful.
I have a question about the Creative Minds challenge. I am going to see Leonard Cohen in concert in Ocotober and would like to use that for music appreciation. Wikipedia lists him as a singer/songwriter. I was thinking of usingThe Protest Singer An Intimate Portrait of Pete Seeger as my book but was wondering id songwriter had to be in the title too.
Kathleen wrote: "I have a question about the Creative Minds challenge. I am going to see Leonard Cohen in concert in Ocotober and would like to use that for music appreciation. Wikipedia lists him as a singer/son..."For the music appreciation task it needs to be a genre of music in the case of that book protest would work as a genre then you would need to listen or go to a concert with that type of music - if you want to use that concert then you need to find a book that has the genre of music he sings in the titleLindsey wrote: "I'm not gonna say the name of the book, but what if a character spends most of the book as a foster kid and then at the end is finally adopted? Would that count for the adoption task?"As long as it happens at some point during the book it's fine
Katie wrote: "For task 15.6, would lacemaking be considered an art? Do I have to make lace or can I make other art?
Cait - Would 'road' be considered a place or a thing? It's not part of a proper street name."Yes lace making would be fine but you can do any kind of art
Tanja wrote: "Cynthia, for the addiction task, many are asking -- can the addiction be non-drug or liquor related? Rachel Lee wrote: "Kirsten wrote: "15.8I haven't seen the letter "K" discussed here (but perhaps I missed it). I abhor military history, and so I was wondering--would books about a region be acceptable? Say a boo..."
Kristen -- I have a 'K' name too, and decided to go with West with the Night. It's set in Kenya, and isn't about war. Wa-hoo!!
Angela wrote: "Cindy and Cait I love your challenges! Gives me a chance to read some of the books I really want to read on my TBR!! Thanks :)"I second that!
Teresa,You mean the links to such places like bibilotravel.com and other lists? That's a good idea.
My suggestion would be people would PM Cynthia a list of links with a short description. She could copy-paste it into a single post. That way the list doesn't run into 100 messages and we're back at square one by filtering through.
Example of a PM:
CIA World Factbook Website -- https://www.cia.gov/library/publicati... (use drop-down to search for countries)
That is IF Cynthia approves.
Cynthia for the task with the Homophones in do both the words need to be in the same tense and form? For instance I wanted to read a book with Tale in the title but the book to go with it has Tails not Tail in the title. Will this count?
Alice wrote: "Cynthia for the task with the Homophones in do both the words need to be in the same tense and form? For instance I wanted to read a book with Tale in the title but the book to go with it has Tails..."Alice, they would need to be in the same tense in order for it to be a homophone. If you add the letter S to the end of one and not the other, they no longer sound the same and are therefore not homophones.
One more question (though this might have been answered previously, and if so, I'm sorry):I have a long name, 18 letters in my first and last, not including the 9 in my middle. For the addition task, could I use an author that uses three names to make 18, or would I have to find one that has 18 in only his/her first and last name?
And sorry about the Kindred question, I read it my first year in college and forgot that it was before the war, thanks for reminding me! Maybe I'll use it for the reread one.
"Addition - Add Up The Number Of Letters Found In Your First and Last Names Then Read A Book Written By An Author Whose Name Contains The Same Number Of Letters."It says YOUR first and last name only... It's vague about the author's name. I would think their full name would be okay, though, as long as it's the name they write under.
