FALL CHALLENGE 2009 QUESTIONS
Petra wrote: "For Task 10.10, would "Jackal" or "Hyena" work for the word "Cat(s)"?"
Petra, those are both in the dog family, not cat.
El wrote: "Morgan wrote: "I have a question about 5.5, the going back to school task. I'm only in 10th grade, so do you want me to re-read a book I read last year, or can I use a required reading book from th..."Okay. Thanks a bunch. I think I will reread To Kill a Mockingbird. I read that last year.
Petra wrote: "For Task 10.10, would "Jackal" or "Hyena" work for the word "Cat(s)"?"No for that task it's the word Cat or Cats or a picture of a cat (big cat or small) on the cover
Emily wrote: "For the grammar challenge (participles specifically), would "rises" and "rising" be considered an appropriate match? i.e. does the verb have to be "rise" or it it ok to use the third person singula..."For that I had meant one to be the base word and then a variation so it would need to be rise and rose/risen/rises/rising
Krista wrote: "Hi Cyntia: For task 15.4, do the movies need to be theatrical releases (played in movie theaters) or can they be shows shown directly on TV? I'm thinking about some Nova (Public Television) scien..."That's fine
Nicole wrote: "Just to clarify- unless otherwise stated, fiction OR nonfiction will work for a task (for example: 5.1)- is this correct?
Thanks!"Yes
I had computer issues yesterday so I wasn't around but hopefully that covers everything. Thanks for the thank yous; I'm always happy to help where I can!!
"Morgan wrote: "I have a question about 5.5, the going back to school task. I'm only in 10th grade, so do you want me to re-read a book I read last year, or can I use a required reading b..."Morgan - I think that you are awesome ! Amy
Krista wrote: "Cynthia wrote: "Krista wrote: "Hey Cynthia: For task 10.3 (the math section) my number is 40 for the division task. I know I can read a book that is 4th in the series, but how should I handle..."
Restoree by Anne McCaffrey comes to mind here.
Petra wrote: "For Task 10.10, would "Jackal" or "Hyena" work for the word "Cat(s)"?"Neither jackels nor hyenas are cats or felines. Jackels are in the dog family and hyenas are on their own.
Sara wrote: "Cynthia, for the German task, can I read Night by Elie Wiesel?"That would be ok - I think I read it in high school but I don't remember but from what Novelist says it seems as if a good portion takes place in Germany so I'll take it.Angela wrote: "Would Shel Silverstein work for the a collection of children stories?"No those are more geared towards Juveniles not younger children
Cynthia wrote: "Sara wrote: "Cynthia, for the German task, can I read Night by Elie Wiesel?"That would be ok - I think I read it in high school but I don't remember but from what Novelist says it seems..."Sorry, I don't have kids, so can you explain the difference between Juvenile/children's books? What should I be looking for? I was planning on reading where the sidewalk ends and a Dr. Seuss book, but now I'm not sure if they will work.
From GoodReads "Children's literature is for readers and listeners up to about age 12. It is often illustrated. The term is used in senses that sometimes exclude young-adult fiction, comic books, or other genres. Books specifically for children existed at least several hundred years ago."
Kate wrote: "Cynthia wrote: "Sara wrote: "Cynthia, for the German task, can I read Night by Elie Wiesel?"That would be ok - I think I read it in high school but I don't remember but from what Noveli..."I think of juvenile books are geared towards about the 4th grade level and up - I'm looking for books geared to younger children - picture books basically - so Dr. Seuss (several of them) would be fine - if you go to your local library - anything found in the easy or children's section should work.
I was planning on reading Fugitive Pieces A Novel for the geography task. Bibliotravel says it's set in Poland. Has anyone who has read the book confirm this?
I know Cynthia has the deciding vote on the Juvenile/children's books, but reading between her lines, I'd say she is defining Juvenile as chapter books (harder books for about third grade on up) and children's books as the Easy Readers for grades 1-easy 3. I'm not sure where she stands on the pictures books that you read aloud to your preschoolers. The Berenstain Bear books fit into the Easy Reader category. Think Cat in the Hat, Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad, Amelia Bedelia.
Donna Jo wrote: "I know Cynthia has the deciding vote on the Juvenile/children's books, but reading between her lines, I'd say she is defining Juvenile as chapter books (harder books for about third grade on up) an..."So would Where the Wild Things Are Work?
Sorry about all the confusion. This is a genre I'm not at all familiar with. I originally decided on The Giving Tree b/c it's listed in a bunch of Children's Lit lists on goodreads, so I'm just not getting the subtle distinctions, I guess.
Cait wrote: "I was planning on reading Fugitive Pieces A Novel for the geography task. Bibliotravel says it's set in Poland. Has anyone who has read the book confirm this? "From what Novelist says it takes place in several locations Poland to start, Greece and Canada as well
Kate wrote: "Donna Jo wrote: "I know Cynthia has the deciding vote on the Juvenile/children's books, but reading between her lines, I'd say she is defining Juvenile as chapter books (harder books for about thir..."Yes Where the Wild Things are is fine and actually The Giving Tree is fine as well just not his poetry collections like Where the Sidewalk ends.
for the giving thanks challenge i was wondering if i could read Coffee at Luke's An Unauthorized Gilmore Girls Gabfest, it's a collection of essays for the television show gilmore girls. i'm most thankful for my mom and gilmore girls is all about the mother/daughter relationship.thanks.
lesley wrote: "for the giving thanks challenge i was wondering if i could read Coffee at Luke's An Unauthorized Gilmore Girls Gabfest, it's a collection of essays for the television show gilmore gir..."As I said to Angela (I think) - if you can explain how your book relates to what your thankful for I'll take it
Hey, Janice, just want to double check. I want to read The Alchemyst for your task. It involves a prophecy about a set of twins who are destined to save the world from the powers of darkness. It says right in the description "and if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it." This fits the task, right?
oh i'm sorry, i thought i went through all the questions before asking.thank you for reanswering that for me, lol! :)

You're really doing a great job, btw. I love these challenges, but it must be like a full-time job for you!
Bonnie wrote: "Hey, Janice, just want to double check. I want to read The Alchemyst for your task. It involves a prophecy about a set of twins who are destined to save the world from the powers of d..."Yes, sounds like that's a great fit.
Cynthia, sorry to add to your workload - hope this is a simple one:I know that Robert Ludlum is dead, but the authors who write the Covert-One books are working from his notes & ideas, so would any of that series count for the 5.8 'Two Heads Are Better Than One' Task?
BJ Rose, just curious. For your task, can we only use the 7 presidents of the US listed? Or are any okay. I was wondering if the second was meant as a "you can use these seven or any from a democratic country but only these seven from the US" I have no book in mind. Just curious :)
For the Fortune/Prophecy task -- would a book about the mystism/history of Gypsies count? If not, I found a book called The Storyteller which ties the three main characters due to visiting a fortune teller. Does any of that work? If not, I can think of possible others such as books with prophecies about the main characters. Hee!Cynthia -- for the collection of children's stories is the Brothers Grimm a tad TOO old for what you were looking for? Right about now I'm sniffling b/c I gave the entire collection of Bernstein Bears to my cousins (in another state). Hee!
A questions for BJ Rose ...Does the President/Prime Minister need to have died whilst still in office? (that doesn't sound like good grammar! lol :))
For Janice's task, I was wondering if a compilation the Brothers Grimm fairy tales would be acceptable? I have no idea the original form of most of the fairy tales they wrote but my hunch would be that at least one had something to do with prophecy or fortunes... would it work?
For the Halloween task, how about White is for Witching A Novel? Witching can be both an adjective and a noun...
Kate wrote: "BJ Rose, would All the President's Men, about Nixon and the Watergate scandal work for your task?"
Cynthia wrote: "Sara wrote: "Cynthia, for the German task, can I read Night by Elie Wiesel?"That would be ok - I think I read it in high school but I don't remember but from what Novelist says it seems..."Technically, the majority of Night takes place in Nazi-occupied Romania and Poland. Of course, the Axis considered those places part of the German Empire. They do end up in Germany proper, though, eventually. So where the book takes place is actually a subjective matter to begin with.
In other words, you'd think Night would work for G, R, and P.
Sara wrote: "For the Halloween task, how about White is for Witching A Novel? Witching can be both an adjective and a noun..."It'll definitely count for my task as long as Cynthia okays it when I finish the summer challenge.
Julia wrote: "BJ Rose, just curious. For your task, can we only use the 7 presidents of the US listed? Or are any okay. I was wondering if the second was meant as a "you can use these seven or any from a democra..."Oh, dear! I went over and over the posting to make sure I included all the info - I should have said "OR About A President Or Prime Minister (Of Any Other Country) Who Has Been Democratically Elected", so it should be only those 7 presidents OR a democratically-elected president/prime minister from a country other than the U.S.A.
Cynthia, could "other" be added to my task to show this? Thanks!!
BJ Rose wrote: "Julia wrote: "Oh, dear! BJ Rose wrote: "Julia wrote: "BJ Rose, just curious. For your task, can we only use the 7 presidents of the US listed? Or are any okay. I was wondering if the second was meant as a "you can use these seven or any ..."So, then I can't use All the President's Men, since Nixon isn't in your list?
Sam wrote: "BJ Rose, Is Team of Rivals (Lincoln) okay for this challenge?.."LOL...I just came to ask the same question.
Petra wrote: "Sam wrote: "BJ Rose, Is Team of Rivals (Lincoln) okay for this challenge?.."LOL...I just came to ask the same question."
Because who doesn't want to read a book that could double as a murder weapon?
Actually, the text ONLY goes to page 750 in the HB copy I have.
BJ Rose wrote: "Kate wrote: "BJ Rose, would All the President's Men, about Nixon and the Watergate scandal work for your task?"NO. Must be only the 7 presidents listed (Nixon didn't die in office) OR president/prime minister from another country. (I used to be a good proof-reader!)
Edited answer (can't believe I responded yes in my first post!)

How true...... :)
Sara wrote: "For the Halloween task, how about White is for Witching A Novel? It seems it should be a book you've already read, but doesn't specify that it should be from last year - you can re-read anything that you've read throughout your education, so long as it has at least 100 pages.
