Rebecca | 878 comments Sands of Time

My Rating 3/5

An okayish thriller. I know it is a story and one should not have too many questions but still..... there were many things not very convincing. The premise was good . This is the second book I have come across of a convent with the code of silence followed by its inhabitants. . But the atmosphere was so different from The Beautiful Mystery which was a five starrer for me.

It is the story of four nuns who escape from their convent during a military attack on it and of the rebel leader Jaimie Miro . How all their lives become entangled is the crux of the story. But I have may unanswered questions (view spoiler)

But all in all an entertaining read.

I had read Sheldon in my late teens and early twenties. Remember liking the initial books, after that boredom set in.

Rebecca | 878 comments I remember being thrilled by the Windmills of the God while reading it as a teenager. Started this with the same expectations of thrill but ....... It is an entertaining one nevertheless.

Bijaya Mishra (bijayakumarmishra) | 38 comments I think we will never get the same charm of reading as we were getting when we were teenagers (irrespective of the book), because we had very less worries and engagements at that time. So, we were more involved in reading. These days we get distracted by various factors while reading. So, the involvement is less and the charm is less. It's my personal opinion though...

Rebecca | 878 comments A Man Called Ove

My Rating 4/5

The day after finishing this book I got up in a melancholy mood and it took me some time to realize that I was having an OVE hangover. This book does gets into your bones and your head just as the author must have intended for the reader to get into Ove's head. As a stranger meeting Ove for the first time I found him a grumpy selfish old man who was too particular about things that could just be let gone. But then I entered his head and found out this gem of a person. But more than Ove I loved Sonja his wife. The author describes her so that as soon as her name is mentioned I get this image of a woman in a riot of colors.

This is the story of an ordinary man who does ordinary things and lives an extraordinary life. It made me think of the old couples I know who were so comfortable with each other. What is the extent of loneliness these people will suffer once a partner is gone?

The ending ..... well it was the most appropriate ending indeed! And on a parting note the initial chapters were a bit dragging and maybe I would not have moved forward had not it been a buddy read. And I am not very fond of the intrusive Parvenah!!

My Rating 4/5

Started as a book in between books and it was a highly satisfactory read... True Christy style except that the background is ancient Egypt. Murders ....many suspects , complicated motives in fact the whole works.

I am better off. I never remember the murderer.
But I do guess who it is, many a time.

Rebecca | 878 comments 16 Lighthouse Road

My Rating 3/5

I have many issues with this one. The only reason it is a 3 starrer and not 2 stars is I finished it rather fast and Debbie Macomber happens to be one of my favourite authors. The storytelling was good but the story or rather the characters fell flat. The only lady who got some admiration from me was the Judge Olivia.

Grace's story was incomplete and all wrong. (view spoiler) And I was tired of Cecilia and her hubby's incessant tifftaffs over nothing.

Basically I don't like books with incomplete endings stating the reason that it's part of a series. And I loved the Blossom Street books so much.

Rebecca | 878 comments Rilla of Ingleside

My Rating 4/5

I partly listened and partly read this and I cried both times. Not that there was much to cry about as I am sure there are more poignant books dealing with war and its effects. But this one talked of the plight of the womenfolk whose men were at war ,the anguish of mothers , the anxiety of sisters and lovers over their loved ones. And so I cried for Anne whose sons were fighting it, And I cried for Rilla whose brothers were fighting it.

My only complaint is that there is very little of Anne here and for that matter even Rilla. It is full of Susan and her wry observations. It was a sweet little read with full of lovable characters and I will continue loving Montgomery.

Darling it is a series and this the first book, therefore unanswered questions are to be expected, else you will never find any link beyond the characters in a series like this one. Agreed her Blossom street series is far better but here she has tried to experiment by linking the books in terms of plot and that is why there are many unresolved questions. Her next book is about Grace, so that should try and clear the questions.

I agree this was not a great book but I truly enjoyed it because I went in with the only expectation of getting introduced to the various characters that will play a role in the series. Each woman has to find her way out in life and her strength to face the mysteries and hardships, if any, that life provides. :)

Are you planning on reading the remaining books in the series or are you abandoning it completely? :)

message 118: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Incidentally, you really sound cute in your review, almost like a grumpy child who hasn't had his nap and now doesn't know why his parents aren't getting him what he wants! :P :P

message 119: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 878 comments Ha ha! Sri I was really grumpy. I expected a lot from Debbie. Mainly because I read the Blossom ones out of order and simply loved it. Both the books I read were standalones. I am not sure whether I will continue with this but not anywhere near time, I am thinking of continuing the blossom street ones.

Rebecca | 878 comments Eve's Diary

My Rating 3/5

A short book which I listened to from Librivox. It was not humor laced as I expected it to be nor was it poignant. It was just some ramblings from the first woman. I remember laughing out loud over Adams Diary and expected the same but .........

The sentimentalist in me simply loved the last line by Adam " Wherever she was, there was Eden".

Rebecca | 878 comments The Last Time I Saw You

My Rating 4/5

This book may be called chic lit but it was a chic lit with a lot of depth. This is the story of a high school reunion of some 60 year olds . Some of them are happy with their families, some are on the brink of divorce, some are already divorced and some have preferred to remain single. It is all their life and more. They came to the reunion with certain expectations and to affirm to the rest how they have fared in life. They all still harboured images of each other when they were lanky teenagers. And much to my chagrin they were essentially still the same. Are we too like that? Havent our life experiences changed us? This book will agree with all who think of their school or college years with nostalgia. I identified with most of the characters in here though they were from a different culture.

Rebecca | 878 comments A Fall of Marigolds

My Rating 3/5

This was a historical fiction and it fulfilled its requirements as a historical fiction. It was in my favourite format 2 heroines one in the past and one in the present and a property linking them both. Both the heroines were survivors of tragedies one of The Shirtwaist Fire of 1911 and the other of the 9/11 attacks and the property was a beautiful scarf. But my complaint lies therein that I did not feel any anguish for their despair nor did I cheer for their happiness. I was a mere onlooker here .And I got the feeling that the story would have gone on very well even without the scarf. But am not discouraged .Will try more from this Author.

Rebecca | 878 comments Career of Evil

My Rating 3/5

Well......Hmm.......Am a bit disappointed. It did not work as well as the first two. First there was too much of gore and crimes of all kinds and I who abhor violence in even minute mentions plodded on only because of the narration and because of Cormoran. But even he lacked the usual charm and his difficulties were I feel exaggerated to gain the readers sympathy. And I hated the POV of the killer. In fact I skipped most of it towards the last. And the end was not as surprising and shocking as it ought to have been. Maybe I will read the next one but am not sure right now.

Rebecca | 878 comments The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion

My Rating 4/5

It was a fun book that I finished in 2 days. Although I had thought that this one was all about friendship from the title it wasnt. It was an entirely different theme dealing with mother daughter relationships

Sookie the main protagonist I thought was a little whiny for a sixty year old but Lenore her domineering mother was an original. The story goes back and forth between two families one Sookie's and the other a polish family of sisters years ago. It was a light read without wringing your heart or brains.

Rebecca | 878 comments Assassin's Apprentice

My Rating 4/5

It was a beautiful book and midway I actually wondered why it was put under fantasy because I had started believing in The Quest and The Skill. Such was the story telling. I reduced a star because I did not find myself rooting for Fitz as I should have maybe because I had full confidence that he would wade out through all the perils before him or maybe because I knew it was a series and so the author cannot kill the protagonist in the first of it obviously. I loved the female characters too but quirky Patience was my favourite and what unusual names Verity! Regal!Kettricken! Will surely read the next one, not very soon but will get into it one day for sure.

Rebecca | 878 comments Chateau of Secrets

My Rating 4/5

A pure historical fiction that dealt with the Nazis in France and was loosely based on a true story. I love these sort of books where there is a secret to be revealed and the secret is worthy of the whole read. Enjoyed it but there are so many books on the Nazi regime that I am beginning to wonder what half the authors of Historical Fiction would have done had there been no Hitler at all.

Rebecca | 878 comments The Chequer Board

My Rating 5/5

A brilliant read. Loved every bit of it. I still treasure my memories of A Town Like Alice which I read back in my teens. That and the blurb prompted me to BR this. I read it in paperback with a beautiful red cover which added to the pleasure.
The storyline is simple. A man who is given only a few more months to live by his doctors goes in search of some comrades who had shared bad times with him. This is their story as well as his and each one had its charm. I thought that the Burmese woman had traces of the heroine in A Town Like Alice. My type of book.

Rebecca | 878 comments The Man in the Brown Suit

My Rating 4/5

An Agatha Christie which had a taste of Woodehouse at least in the initial chapters where the heroine Anne made me chuckle with her witty comments. I did not know that Dame Christie had a great sense of humor. This was a reread and as always I remembered who the culprit was midway through but still enjoyed it. The romance was done neatly too. But I still prefer Miss Marple and Poirot to Christie's other works.
