Glad it wasn't a complete waste.

Sue | 205 comments Today is LaVyrle Spencer birthday, she wrote some of the best books I've ever read... The Gamble and Morning Glory, though written in the 80's these were not bodice rippers though there is nothing wrong with that. *wink* I read my share.

If I can recommend these as a small salute to a great author, try either but my all time favorite is Morning Glory, what an absolute pleasure that was to read. Depression Era South - Ex-Con and shunned woman are together based on mutual need. This couple grows with each chapter and you just fall a little in love with them yourself. What growth these characters attain with just the belief in each other. A touching story you remember long after you've put the book down. It's a slow moving story, not like a lot of today's novels. But it's a story worth reading. Happy Birthday LaVyrle. FYI - This was made into one of the worst adaptations ever, right up there with Julie Garwood's For the Roses which turned into a TV movie Rose Hill. Avoid those adaptions AT ALL COST.

message 406: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinmy) I wholeheartedly agree that Morning Glory is a fantastic book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads romance. I haven't read The Gamble yet, but I've liked everything else I've read by this author so I'm sure it will be good.

Thanks for the warning about the movie adaption of this book. I saw For the Roses several years ago. If it's anything like that, I'll stay far away.

I finished listening to Three Odd Balls (Cue Ball Mysteries, #3) by Cindy Blackburn and about to start This Shattered World (Starbound, #2) by Amie Kaufman for the series read. the discussion is here

Yes, that trope is a big no no for me too, but it worked out relatively well (view spoiler) and I loved the characters so much that I was able to put it aside.

We are like minded, makes me shy away from reading the book first if I know it'll become a movie. They rarely stand up unless it's YA for some reason and sometimes not even then.

I've read the first 2 in the series and both were disappointing for different reasons. I'm glad that you liked this one.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) ShoSho, I liked the first book but was really underwhelmed by the second. Hoping for the best with this one. Did you request from NetGalley or have you given up?

No I didn't request it. I'll probably read it if I can get a free copy but I won't pay for it!
The first one the story was much better than the second but that scene ,that hated (view spoiler)scene. And that guy's reaction when he sees her afterward! Ughhh!

message 418: by Jonetta (last edited Jul 20, 2016 04:46PM) (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) Nope. Didn't know they existed.

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Jonetta wrote: "Nope. Didn't know they existed."

It seems they are not really in between books but a spin off series name "bound by" with 4 novellas. I just checked her website.

message 420: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) I did, too, but she refers to them also as Red-Hot SEALs novellas and I see they're included in that series, too.

FYI, apparently, I downloaded the first novella free from her website (newsletter subscriber). Frankly, I'd given up on the series after significant delays of the new book release when the previous one ended in a cliffhanger.

message 421: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) Oh, I'm not paying for that second novella:)

Oh you're right , once it's downloaded I can read it even after it's archived.
I once got approved for a book on the day it was suppose to be archived . By the time I logged to Netgalley it was archived and I wasn't able to download it or read it!

Sue | 205 comments I'm back to reading Into the Wilderness, it's a slow read and easy to put down. But minutes back into it things are coming to a head and I expect a major change. Guess my timing was bad when I put it down. Outlander fans, as I've mentioned so far it's a lot like Diana Galbaldon's ABOSA. So it's a slow starter, but hopefully meet, great and settings are done and we can get some action.
