I looked it up. I hope it's right.... Anne of Green Gables ?

"Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.”

message 10: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Yes, Phrynne! I knew it was easy, but thought it was appropriate!

message 11: by Phrynne, Series Queen! (new)

Phrynne | 15791 comments Mod
Very appropriate:)

Here's another one from a book most of us read and loved.

"The letter which would change everything arrived on a Tuesday"

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments THERE IS A LEGEND

message 15: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments Yep, wasn't sure if that would be considered the first sentence, but it is the first words of the novel. Your go Michael :D

message 16: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments I'm guessing: The Virgin Suicides ??

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Clue number 1: fourth book in a series....

message 21: by Phrynne, Series Queen! (new)

Phrynne | 15791 comments Mod
That's a Corinna book. Now I have to go look it up........

message 22: by Phrynne, Series Queen! (new)

Phrynne | 15791 comments Mod
If you say it's number 4 then it must be Trick or Treat

message 23: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Indeed! Well done, Phrynne!

message 24: by Phrynne, Series Queen! (new)

Phrynne | 15791 comments Mod
One of my favourite series and she usually starts at 4 00 am:)

Here's one that I think is easy!

"The man in black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed"

message 25: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Yeah, I know that one, but then I'll have to find another quote, and I have to go off to a party so I'll leave it to someone else

Yes, I had a few other clues, one of which was "Phrynne has read it"

message 27: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Phrynne wrote: "Here's one that I think is easy!

"The man in black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed""

I've never read it, but would that be The Gunslinger?

Sharon, your commentary was making me laugh!

message 28: by Phrynne, Series Queen! (last edited Dec 19, 2015 04:02AM) (new)

Phrynne | 15791 comments Mod
Yes it is Kathryn . Your turn!

message 29: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments OK...

"It was 7 minutes after midnight."

message 30: by Phrynne, Series Queen! (new)

Phrynne | 15791 comments Mod
Can you give us a clue?

message 31: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Phrynne wrote: "Can you give us a clue?"

Absolutely! I thought when I typed it that it seemed a bit tough!

You, Mish and Marianne have all read this one.

More clues available, if required!

message 32: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments Kathryn wrote: "OK...

Interesting first line. I wonder what made the author choose 7 minutes instead of 2 or 6 or whatever?

Maybe he/she rolled 2 dice and 7 came up... Another clue is that I haven't read this (nor have you, Sharon - at least according to your GR shelves), so I can't tell you if the reason for 7 minutes becomes more clear.

message 34: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments I know this one, it's got something to do with a dog :)

I read a book once called The Seven Minutes by Irving Wallace ...very controversial at the time. But I don't think that is your book Kathryn :)

message 36: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Carolyn wrote: "I know this one, it's got something to do with a dog :)"

I do too, but then I'll have to search out another first sentence, so I'll give someone else a go.
It was a great read, though!
And perhaps I shouldn't mention there's a way to cheat.....

message 37: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments If you know it, go for it, Marianne! This is my second turn!

message 38: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Yes, but like I said, I'll have to search out another first sentence......

message 39: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Ah! I see!! But I would imagine you would have one or two books on hand that you could use for that, Marianne?? :-P

message 40: by Carolyn (last edited Dec 19, 2015 07:49PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments Ok, I'll have a go. I'm pretty sure it's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time because I love that book and reread it recently.

If that's correct my first line is from one that I also read recently and a lot of people will get:
" The circus arrives without warning."

too lazy right now... and you can't make it too hard or no one will get it

Maybe that was too easy!

"In south-western Sydney, on a chilly winter's night, a siege is in progress."

message 47: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments I know this one, read it not so long ago....

message 48: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments Mmm, doesn't ring a bell. Might not have read it.

message 49: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Brenda and I have read it, and you have it marked as Want to Read...

message 50: by Carolyn (last edited Dec 19, 2015 11:43PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments Lol! That narrows it down to 805! Although it's most likely an Aussie author so less than 100. Mmm..... what has Marianne read recently? Or is Michael correct?
