Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments The alternates:
Each number corresponds with the spot on the board.
For colors: The cover has to be at least 50%
For locations: As long as the book takes part at all in the given location .
For Shelves: Any book on the given shelf
For Publication Years: I'll be using how GR has it's publication date listed.
For Authors Names: The first, middle, or last name of the author is ok.
For Titles: Only the first word of the title. A, An, And, and The do not count.
So if the letter is B: The Best Day would be ok. Dear Betty would not be ok.

Marty (martymill) | 1299 comments Hi there, finally figured out which group I was in!

My name suggestions:
Nine Bright Shiners, from "The Nine Bright Shiners, characters in Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy. The Nine Bright Shiners was a 1930s book of poems by Anne Ridler[4] and a 1988 fiction book by Anthea Fraser;[5] the name derives from "a very curious old semi-pagan, semi-Christian" song." - Wikipedia

Alternatively, The Title Niners - from Title IX of the Civil Rights Code.

Jennifer C. | 1722 comments Is anyone willing to be captain? I would really rather not.

Also, tell us a little about yourself. I'm 34 and I live near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I played in the last round of this challenge and it was fun. Right now I'm reading Ball & Chain and Reached.

Jennifer C. | 1722 comments Oh I read Drood by Dan Simmons and I loved it! How is The Abominable?

I'm okay with any of the names.

Hina ~ I would love for you to be captain! Whenever you are able to roll on Friday's is good with me. I work all day and won't have much time to read that day anyway.

message 14: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 514 comments All right Jennifer. Since its usually a work day, I probably wont be able to roll at midnight, but I am usually up by 5 AM so I can roll then. I am in central time zone. if anyone is up earlier, you are more than welcome to roll.

Intro about me, I am 29, living in Chicago. I played both version last time, and doing so in this round too. I had fun! I just finished Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips yesterday, and recently finished Dark God's Bride by Dahlia Summers this afterrnoon and currently reading an HP His Ring is Not Enough by Maisey Yates.

Week 1

Book: Wanted
Series # or Alternate: #8
Spot: #8
Rating: 4 Stars
Finished: 4/24
Review: This series is just a fun read. Sometimes I wonder if the author even knows where she's going with the story, though. This one introduces Ali's twin sister. The entire book makes you go back and forth wondering if she is really Ali or Courtney. And the man accused in the last book of being Ali's murderer who obviously isn't has an alibi and the blame is starting to focus on Melissa. The blame changes focus so many times, it's hard to say who I really believe is responsible. This series is very different from the TV show. The characters are different and there are some things that just don't match up at all. I like them both and will keep going with both.

Wanted (Pretty Little Liars, #8) by Sara Shepard

Book: The Magyar Venus by Lyn Hamilton - #8 in the Lara McClintoch series
Date: 4/22/14
Rating: Four stars
Review:
This has been on my TBR list for a while. I didn't even realize that it was part of a series when I first added it. Fortunately this is one of those that you can start in the middle, catch up with the first few installments later, and still be able to enjoy the plot.

Lara McClintoch is an antiques dealer just coming off a breakup with her boyfriend, a sweet natured copy named Roy. She becomes involved in a tragedy that follows hard on the heels of a local art event, the unveiling of a prehistoric carving from Hungary. The so-called Magyar Venus promises to be the Cottington Museum's crown jewel. However, a series of strange incidents that evening, leading up to the death of one of Lara's college friends, Anna, propels Lara into the search for the truth about the Venus's authenticity as well as the suspicious nature of Anna's death.

Assisted (rather against her will) by her other college friends, known as the Divas, Lara begins tracing the steps of the Venus's discoverer, an early 20th century explorer by the name of C. J. Pike. Complicating all this is her attraction to the Cottington's new curator, Karoly Molinar. Karoly, aka Charles Miller, was the darling of the Diva set and even dated several of them, including Lara. Karoly seems determined to reignite the old flame he and Lara briefly shared. While she doubts his motives, she is still drawn to his charm.

While following Pike's trail, Lara begins to make some disturbing discoveries about the actual events surrounding the Venus's excavation. A trip to the original cave site not only raises more questions than answers, it also puts her smack in the middle of another murder scene.

So is the Venus real? Who really found her? How did Karoly come by her and who is the mysterious owner who sold it to him? Why was the Hungarian dealer he worked with murdered? And why are the Divas so hellbent on proving that the Venus is a fake? The novel does keep you guessing until the last few chapters, then wraps everything up very neatly.

This was a nice, quick read, perfect for a weekend or a rainy afternoon. It wasn't terribly challenging or unusual and it doesn't really live up to what I consider to be an 'archaeological mystery,' hence the four stars. Still, it's very entertaining and certainly makes me want to read the other installments.

Review: Biting Bad had its moments for me. When it was good, it was great and when it wasn't, I felt it was going through the motions. Kudos for the action scenes which were plentiful and gave Merit a chance to be the kick ass heroine I want her to be and to Ethan and Merit's relationship (we have come some far from dead Ethan!!). Bonus points for a heck of an ending that has me looking to get my grubby paws on the next book.

Date Read: 4/24/14
Rating: 1 Star

Review:
I picked this book up because my original book won't be out till May, but this book was so bad. I didn't like the heroine at all, in the beginning she is young and foolish and believes all the lies and runs away from her husband, but she is back to her husband to get money for the charity she volunteers at, but it was more of the same, where she is being immature and bitter and seriously by the end I didn't like the hero either. One measly straight conversation would have solved everything for both of them. And if it wasn't for the challenge, I would have pushed off reading the challenge.

Book: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Series # or Alternate: #1
Spot: #18
Rating: 3 Stars
Finished: 4/26
Review: This book was very close to the movie. The original movie with Judy Garland. There are a few differences. Dorothy's ruby slippers are actually silver. The Wicked Witch of the West isn't green. Dorothy is very young in the book. They don't say exactly how old she is, but they say that she is tall for her age and she is the same size as the Munchkins. I really liked it and can't wait to continue with the series. I'm working up to reading Dorothy Must Die and I want to read the actual series before I start that. It is supposed to have a lot of small references to the original.

Book: Twelve by Jasper Kent
Date: 5/1/14
Rating: Three stars
Review:
Another series that I had high hopes for but that went a little 'meh' on me. The story and setting are cool - it's 1812 in Russia and Napoleon's Grand Army is threatening Moscow. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so one of Aleksei Danilov's fellow officers, Dmitry, calls on a group of 12 foreign mercenaries, the "Twelve" of the title, who are also know as the Oprichniki. Of course, they're vampires. Of course, Aleksei discovers this. And of course, he ends up hunting them down one by one. Stop me if you've heard this one.

What saved this book was the historical backdrop and details. I love reading novels set during periods of Russian history (it's not used enough in English language literature, in my opinion. The Battle of Borodino, the capture and burning of Moscow and Napoleon's ignominious retreat are all vividly portrayed. There's also a minor espionage plot line, the question of how much Dmitry knows about the true nature of the Oprichniki, and the saucy character of Dominiika aka Dominique, Aleksei's courtesan/mistress, who cuts him down to size more than once. (Which he often desperately needs.)

I would like to see where Kent went with the rest of the series, so I'll give the second installment a try later on, after I've read some other books on my TBR list.

Date Read: 4/30/14

Review:
It was an interesting book. We have a a genius hero who is very disconnected with his emotions and is very reclusive and we have an heroine who is the very opposite of him, where she brings love and laughter to him. And I love their baby, she is just adorable. I really like the way the book came together. It was definitely a good read for a Harlequin, especially the geekspeak. Although, knowing how he was effected by his upbringing and how he was living his life, sometime his disconnect annoyed me, even though I know he was opening up more. It just wasn't happening fast enough for me.

Review: Grrr, I am now officially frustrated and have to get my hands on the next book; Cast in Sorrow. After 540 pages who would have thought this would end in a cliffhanger? Not I!! Guess I should have read the reviews before delving into this one.

Anyway, I continue to love Kaylen and the Elantran world; although I do wish that Kaylen would “grow up” a bit. She continues to behave in some ways like a child and I’m not sure if that is deliberate on Ms. Sagara’s choice or not. Could it be a remnant of Kaylen’s childhood? I wonder?

Love, love Severn!! He has the patience of Job with Kaylen. The deepening of their relationship and perhaps Kaylen’s ability to finally move past childhood events was welcomed. Hopefully there relationship will further develop in Cast in Sorrow.

I particularly enjoyed Kaylen and Teela’s relationship. You can tell Teela will always treat her like that younger sibling that is annoying but well loved. We also get to learn a bit about Teela; and some of her revelations were surprising. We haven’t gotten to learn a lot about the Barrani relationships and customs so that was interesting.

Nightshade, oh Nightshade. I wonder what you have up your sleeve(s) for our heroine Kaylen. You continue to surprise and torment me. One moment I adore you, the other I loathe you. I think I may be in love.

The journey to the West March is the main event in this novel and it that journey builds up to the end of the book where it cuts off abruptly. I was left wanting more, and not in a good way which is probably reflected in my star reduction. If you’ve invested yourself in reading the series, then you will want to read Cast in Peril, just be sure to have Cast in Sorrow on hand to continue.
