Ah! I remember it well from my youth.

As for it's accuracy, it gets the basic idea across pretty well. Rasputin certainly did have many lovers, though it's a matter of debate as to whether the tsaritsa was actually one of them. In describing the monk's murder, the lyrics actually understate how difficult he was to kill.

The main problem is that omits the main reason that Rasputin became so influential. The tsarevich, Alexis, heir to the throne, suffered from haemophilia. Rasputin was a mystic healer and it was believed - particularity by the tsaritsa - that he was able to at least partially cure the boy. It was this, rather than his sexuality, that gave him such power in Russia. (less)

I do a large amount of planning up front, so when I'm actually writing I always know - to the level of a scene - what should be coming next.

That's not to say that during the planning process I don't sometimes find myself stumped for an idea, but at that stage I'm not pressurizing myself. Those ideas tend to come when you're doing something else.

Occasionally during the actual writing I find myself with really no idea how to express the scene I'm supposed to be writing, but I find then the best approach is just to press on. I write something for the scene so that I can move on to the next one, which hopefully will be easier. Then I can fix the tricky scene during rewrites.(less)

"You're going to have to take my review with a grain of salt - for some moronic reason I thought that this was the fifth and last book (I'm gettin old or something) and it didn't exactly ruin the book, BUT I confess it this had been the finale, it..." Read more of this review »

"This is a good old fashioned murder mystery. The first in a trilogy involving Charlie Woolf. The beauty of this one and the reason it caught my eye is it is set in Brighton. I have lived in the vicinity for many years and it was a fascinating read..." Read more of this review »

Nice feel for period and location, along with good prose and dialogue style. The plot was a bit overblown and a tad Dickensian (in that it relied on rather a lot of coincidence). Also the hero did seem keen to walk into trouble.

Not quite unputdownabl

First Archer I've ever read. In comparison with books of what I'd judge were a similar level and genre I'd say it does a little better than average on prose style and a little worse on characterisation.

What it really lacks - and for the kind of book

A nice line in righteous anger against Victorian corruption and inequality is spoiled by basically picking a name out of a hat as a suspect for the Ripper crimes.
