I love Darian. Just needed to get that out of the way. I've seen reviews where people were having trouble with the written Essex accent Darian has, but I never thought it was obtrusive. I really liked it because it was a part of who Darian is and how Ash and Ash's friends reacted to him. I liked how Ash's bipolar was portrayed with the chapter length that fits the stage of bipolar he was in. I liked that Darian didn't treat Ash differently when he found out about the bipolar the way Niall did (btw, I really didn't like Niall. He was a bit of an ass). I really enjoyed this book and now I need to go read Aftermath.

even when I am missing 3 people?

Will do! Thanks.

Roll 8, Spot 71
Title:Lost Voices by Sarah Porter, #1 in the Lost Voices series.
Date: 6/13/14
Rating Four stars
Review:
This was an interesting take on the mermaid story. Abused girls become mermaids and take their revenge on humans by luring ships on to the coastal rocks of Alaska and sinking them. Luc is a new mermaid who has just escaped an attempted rape by her drunken uncle. She proves to be an excellent singer but is not comfortable helping to kill off her former fellow humans.
Mermaids are not allowed to physically hurt one another, but they can be kicked out of a colony if they violate this rule. This also applies to harming the Larvae - the baby mermaids who are too young to really survive the rough ocean conditions. Luce feels sorry for them as well, to the derision of her Queen Catarina, a troubled soul who is alternately loving and cruel to Luce.
I liked the premise. The story is meant for young adult readers, so at times I thought there was a little too much teen angst about wanting to belong and being wanted by her fellow mermaids. Really, the others turn out to be as spiteful and easily led into trouble by an a new malevolent mermaid as any human teenagers. I got a little impatient with the characters after a while. It was hard to believe that a character as strong as Catarina would allow an upstart to so quickly and easily take over her colony.
I do want to read the next installment - a boy that Luce secretly saved (also against mermaid rules) from a shipwreck looks to be a problem for her in the future.

Book 7: Up From the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

I am sad to see the end of this series but I did enjoy the surprises in Up From the Grave, but I can't really write a complete review of this one without giving away a tone of spoilers. Needless to say it is a must read for Night Huntress series readers but most will "probably" come away with the similar feelings.
Up From the Grave didn't leave me with the same connection that I had with previous stories; perhaps it was the lack of steamy romance or the open ending, but I was left feeling a bit incomplete by the whole story. There were some highlights for me; one was Ian and the second were Vlad and Denise. In previous novels, I really did not like Ian, but in Up From the Grave we get to see another side of him and I laughed the whole way. I LOVED this scene:
“Shame on you, Crispin. Married how long, and you haven’t spanked your wife with a metal spatula yet?”
I’d gotten used to Ian’s assumption that everyone was as perverted as he was, so I didn’t miss a beat.
“We prefer blender beaters for our kitchen utensil kink,” I said with a straight face.
Bones hid his smile behind his hand, but Ian looked intrigued.
“I haven’t tried that … oh, you’re lying, aren’t you?”
“Ya think?” I asked with a snort.
Ian gave a sigh of exaggerated patience and glanced at Bones.
Hopefully we will see more of these two in other works. Note, if you haven't read the Night Huntress series start at the beginning. This is a series that is best read in order.
Adieu Cat & Bones. :-( Please come and visit us again......

I rolled a 5 and 1 which puts us at spot 77.

Loved the spin on an old story. Took me a little to get into the story because I was confused but then I couldn't put it down. Fun easy read!
